New Epic Destiny: Mystic Theurge

This is an old character archetype and style that I think would make for amazing fun late game. Basically, an epic destiny that boosts spell progression for both Arcane and Divine casters allowing a hybrid playstyle.

Not sure what the best way to implement this would be.. a class archetype.. some sort of... prestige or iconic class? Or just through an Epic Destiny that grants higher level features so long as you meet both the divine and arcane caster requirements?

It's a super rough concept to start with but one I'd love to see tackled one day!

The first issue is DDO doesn't have prestige classes the way PnP or other CRPGs like Neverwinter Nights 2. Make, say, sorcerer 6 / Favored Soul 4 / Mystic Theurge 10 in NWN 2 and you wind up with a level 16 sorcerer + level 14 Favored Soul; you traded optimization for versatility. Make a sorcerer 10 / Favored Soul 10 in DDO and you've found a, uhh, creative way to earn a sorcerer PL.

[And yes, I'm sure someone knows how to make this shine as an Eldritch Knight or whatever; but that's a testament to how OP certain trees are, not a credit to the inherent synergies of this class combo.]

While each Epic Destiny has its intended fortes, I doubt SSG would be eager to make an ED just for arcane+divine hybrids. Especially since ED spells already tend to be universal in the sense of using your highest mental stat so they work for any caster.

[Working well for every caster is a much different criteria.]

So that leaves a new hypothetical Mystic Theurge class Archetype. Favored Soul + sorcerer seems the most probable, since it's the only divine+arcane combo in DDO with the same caster stat. I don't know how many people are eager to sacrifice a bunch of caster levels and top-shelf spells so they can be a hybrid caster like this. But hey, I like new toys to play with, so it's fine by me. :)

I guess, it could work as an archetype, just not as broad and free-choosing of the spells than you expect from the old prestige class.

First, take wizard. Then you edit the spell list to include several cleric spells while dropping some very uncleric choices. Then drop some bonus feat for cleric domain (minus turn undead abilities). Drop Pale Master and EK trees for Divine Disciple and the archetypetree. Divine Disciple gives more spells to spellbook, this could continue in the archetype tree or the archetype tree could have a bunch of SLAs, like archmage.

Then we got a delver into the magical secrets from the arcane and divine PoV.

This definitely sounds like something I'd be interested in playing!

Yeah I've always wanted to see MT implemented in DDO, but I always pencilled it in as a new third tree for Sorc, with Savant getting rolled together into a multiselector tree. You could do it with an Archetype too, but I think its better to just improve the base class itself.

That'd give Sorc some self healing, since basically everyone else has some now. Enhancement trees are a more natural place for adding in cross-class spellbook spells and SLAs, too.

Doesnt have to be anything super weird, either. Standard crit line for Pos and Light spells. Couple boxes for USP+Pos/Light power. Standard SLAs cribbed from other class trees like Close Wounds and CMW for heals, Searing Light/Sunbeam/etc. for DPS. Maybe one or two new active special abilities for flavor. Add in the "good spells" in the core...something like Sun Bolt C4, Heal C5, Divine Wrath capstone if you want to make a sorc a "Light Savant".

To be fair, everyone brings up the obvious combination of Sorc/Soul.. because of class casting stats and other things.. Though I have to point out, my favorite Mystic Theurge is a Wizard/Cleric combo because I love prepared casters. I hope that if they do put this out there, they do it in a way that supports different playstyles!
