Night Revels Expired Ingredient Bug And Auction House

Just to clarify the issue here, because the current ingredients are mislabeled saying they expire in 2023, and the 2023 ingredients were also mislabeled, it is literally impossible to tell the difference in the auction house between materials from last year and this year. This is now 2 years in a row that they have not updated the expiration text (this year's ingredients should expire in 2025, last year's ingredients should have expired in 2024, this year, before Night Revels).

I bought some ingredients from the ASAH after carefully inspecting them, because I was aware of people selling expired ingredients in years past.

These ingredients from last year differ from the previous problem, because there is no amount of due diligence that can protect you from this issue. These ingredients:

1) Do not have their name altered to indicate they are expired.
2) Do not have the purple background that expired ingredients have on their icon.
3) They have the exact same description as current ingredients (including the incorrect expiration year that has now been in place for 2 years running).

I bought these yesterday and immediately brought the issue to SSG's attention on the official player bug reports discord with attached screenshots as proof of the issue, where it was confirmed to be a bug by a developer there.

Some time after that, they put the announcement in the launcher that no one should buy any Mabar ingredients from the auction house. (You're welcome for your free QA SSG).

I submitted a ticket to customer support with documentation explaining that a blatant, acknowledged bug caused me to get worthless materials from the Astral Shard auction house, losing real money. I indicated that I would be fine with either them replacing the expired ingredients with real ones, or refunding my astral shards.

I got a response telling me that I should have been more careful to avoid scams on the Auction House. The primary scam on the auction house right now is the game client itself. They are right, I should have been more careful to avoid this scam of a game.

I love this game, I love these devs, but good god d*mn I am unbelievably frustrated at the way I have been treated the past couple days. This unimaginably bad customer support response has me seriously considering whether I want to continue to be a customer of this company.

Can you imagine doing business with someone for years, they spent hundreds (or maybe more, I don't like to think about it) of dollars on your products, and then one day you make a mistake and one of your customers loses out on a few bucks. Not a big deal in the grand scheme, but they request a refund of that money and you tell them to take a hike? It boggles the mind that such a business is still operational.

Honestly, its sad to say but a lot of their customer service reps are just lazy. If you get certain reps to reply (for example, the GOAT Rob Smith), your issue likely will get resolved with no headache. Others just throw out the typical reply and brush you off.

I find it very disappointing that Cordovan said in today’s Fridays at Four live stream this problem would not be fixed for this year’s night revels.

I understand that sometimes mistakes happen and it can be difficult for a smaller team like SSG to fix every mistake, but this feels like it should be a high enough priority to fix in a patch. If SSG can’t execute the current special event with excellence, why would I ever believe that they could role out some of the bigger changes they’ve been talking about like 64bit servers and new types of hardcore with excellence? I want to be escorted about the game, but it’s difficult to be when it seems like SSG is ok with not fixing problems. I want to believe that’s not true, but their actions in situations like this certainly make me feel like it is.

This bug really bothers me because it puts players in a position where they can chat and exploit one another. It erodes trust in each other as players. Why allow players to scam each other by allowing expired ingredients to be sold? Please take some time to fix this problem.

Honestly, the fact that updating a string in a database is such a challenge that they can't get the fix in before November 3rd is so incredibly disheartening. I am a fellow software engineer, so I get it, sometime things are harder than they seem, but come on guys. Really? If it's this hard to update a string, then it needs to be refactored, and you need to have the cajones to just tell the higher ups that this is the cost of doing business. This is the timeline. This is how long it takes. Period. Technical debt MUST be paid. The more you kick it down the road, the more it costs you in the long run. So strap up and pay that debt, before your entire business goes under and everyone loses their job.

A string that needs to be updated each year at an incredibly predictable timeline, it's just too much to handle for 2 years straight? That's an understaffed, underskilled, or poorly managed dev team, straight up. There's not a 4th option.

Would not that solve the problem ?
Why not create a recipe that distills large amounts of them into a booster that increases a tiny bit the drop rate of keys for a short length of time. Something named like The nightmarish All-Saints' rotgut.

Too many times, they give the impression that they don’t care about their customers.

Joe Candymaker and the bank/inventory system can differentiate between old & current ingredients, and so can the auction houses. It’s too bad that players can’t.

It’s absolutely disgusting that SSG either believes that it’s too hard or too time consuming to re-implement the same process each year.

This.

That process should be documented and scripted to a level that a new intern could do it without screwing it up.

It's not a new thing. They know that they have to do this every year. It's a predictable, recurring task that should be quick and easy to do.

It's also not the first time they've screwed it up. There are multiple cliches (none of them are complimentary) about not learning from mistakes and repeating history.

Then there's the optics of not caring enough to hotfix this since it is only a detriment to the players. If they didn't expire the mats properly and we could still turn in old ones, there would have been a hotfix ASAP. They'd probably have shut the event off until *that* was fixed.

Seeing as this isn't the first time it has happened, you'd think that they would be more proactive about getting the coding fixed before the release of the following year's mabar event. At the very least, delaying the release of the event until it has been properly fixed. Wish I could say I was surprised.

Even just having the event is a joke. Its laggy and is there even much new gear to get?

Why is it even possible to set the "expired" flag without also setting the "NoAuction" flag? What is the potential use for expired mats that made SSG set it up that way in the first place?

The only thing I can think of is that it gets them their astral shard cut off the AH, because it seems implausible that a problem this simple has been "unfixable" for years if they actually want to fix it.
