Number of character slots per server? Do we have to purchase slots?

Any addiction isn't healthy. Even one as relatively innocuous as a computer game. I've personally seen it's impact on family members (not playing DDO, but still), failing at life because they over focused on games. It's not drugs or alcohol, for sure, but to pretend there isn't potential damage just seems more than a bit naive imo.

You dont see an issue with people playing 400 characters?
Addiction.. or Dedication....

How many are really playable characters... the rest are storage mules...

Going to throw characters into a lava pit, duct-taped to an orphan, instead of paying SSG... again... to keep them.

Their screams will be legendary. 😉

So basically you're saying yes. "(up to the number of slots you own)".
At the moment, character slot ownership crosses servers. If I have 20 slots available, it's on every server. Which means I can have 60 toons on 3 servers without going over my limit. In this hypothetical I'm expected to what? Buy 40 more slots when transferring them all to one 64 bit server?
You're math if off, there are 4 servers. 3 new ones, but Corymyr exists and is an option also. So 80 toons in your hypothetical of a player with 20 slots per server across four servers.

I know this is going to be an unpopular take, but this is my honest thought. And you're expected to make the same choice you made in the situation here. Either buy more character slots to put more on one server, or spread them out on multiple servers like they are *right now*. You won't be 'losing' anything in this move if you spread them across servers, as in your hypothetical they are currently already spread accross servers. And it will give you the added benefit of accessing the entire population of players to make friends if you actively play on all four.

If you have more than 80 toons, you'll have to make the same choices you make now if you get a great new toon idea and want to add another one, buy a slot or delete a toon you don't use. I'm seeing a lot of talk about max possible toons and people having to delete hundreds of toons, but I don't think that's reality. There might be some outliers, but I am considered weird for having 39 toons on my server. Everyone is astonished how many I have. I don't know anyone with more than me, and only a handful in my ballpark with 30-35, and most are abandoned toons or mules.

I get it, change is scary, but we'll be all right. :)

Nah, leave the ophans alone, use the two most irritating npscs in the game, Anna and Coyle! :)

They stated on the Fridays at 4 cast yesterday that they will provide additional character slots to help (numbers tbc. LOTRO was 5 I believe), but as Mik has noted, that won't solve everything for folks with really high alts across multiple servers.
I appreciate the token gesture (truly I do), but why don't they just massively increase the number of character slots for sale during this 75% off week? Now is the time they could easily solve this problem with minimal conflict. They won't be accused of the usual cash grab because of the 75% off sale and it will allow people far more freedom when deciding how to consolidate their 8 servers.

I guess they can always bring the -75% sale back for the first few weeks after the move opens, and maybe offer it again after the window closes. That way folks can have a good idea of what they actually need post move. 👍

I am guessing there is a technical issue. But thats strictly a guess.

I guess the next question is do you have any evidence of people with 400+ characters? And if possible, proof that they actually all get used.

If its simply a case of "I have 400 characters because the game lets me have 400 characters" then having 200 characters works perfectly.

due to the inadequacy of storage in the game, mules are a critical component.
Yep. This is literally the only game I have ever had mules in. I resisted it for years, but after many years of hating TRing and throwing away almost every named item I ever got (because I needed a single set of generic items that would be useful for every class and every build) I finally broke down and made a mule. The huge relief of not being flooded with items on my main and not hating getting named items (because every item I got required either throwing it away or throwing something else away to make room for it) made the game much more enjoyable. I actually like getting named items now, but only because I have a place to put them.

And how do they find the time? Are all these 400 toons first lifers? becuase I'll be honest, I'm a happy kept house turtle by my husband, and I have LOT of free time, and I could not manage that insane amount of toons. I have 40+slots, but mostly it's a habit becuase I started playing pre TR when what you had to keep yourself occupied was to make new toons to try new things. And I just didn't want to delete them. I think I regularly play like 8 all on my normal server. I can't even imagine the time required to actually have this be a problem. And I've been playing since 2009. Good grief, that's a long time. LOL
