Pack & Un-Pack Feature

I have a few questions about this feature when it is time to transfer to our new 64-bit worlds.
  • Where will the Pack or Un-Pack feature be located?
  • Is the Pack and/or Un-Pack feature an item that brings up an in-game box?
  • To confirm I read it is best to just transfer one character at a time to not stress resources. Is this accurate?
Thanks for any additional information on this.

The PACK / UNPACK commands will be command line entries in the chat window. Usually defaults to General window but can be changed. The command issued as: /PACK and /UNPACK

That covers 1/2 points. I dont have any info on the 3rd item.

Nobody knows !
Even the devs (as it was said in Friday at Four stream) don't know it yet !
The information about how the finished process will look like shoud appear closer to the 9th of July when this whole system would be released.

It's still being developed. SSG will provide more information and guides when the transfer system goes live.

They aren't sure yet in what it is exactly going to look like. I know a command has been brought up as a possibility but I think they are going to maybe add a button or something to make it more "friendly".

As for transfers... I Think people are saying to do few characters at a time cause of server load so that you have something to play in the meantime. It may be a while before a character completes transfers cause of all the transfers that will be happening.

Yup...
Small team with hard deadlines though.

Its preferrable they dont give any info that will later turn out wrong. But lets say 2juli there should be a very comprehensive FAQ. That gives people confidence the process will work.

I agree they should polish the step-by-step process before publishing. The other details they released already concerning the overall transition process if very good. the Pack/Unpack step-by-step is all that I see remaining to be released.

I don't understand why they'd implement is as a thing you have to do in-game on your character. As they were discussing on the Friday stream, you should basically Pack->Transfer->Unpack, and if you do other stuff in-between you're taking a risk on breaking your character and losing items, stuffing up your guild by creating a new one with the same name instead of unpacking, etc.

So why implement a very manual process that's going to have a massive number of customer support tickets, where all the onus is on the player to follow the steps correctly, rather than just bake this into the transfer tool as an alternative option, that does all of that, where you can either:
a) Transfer your character (just takes the character data as currently)
b) Transfer your character with packed account and guild data (the "pack" command gets run in the background, your transfer gets processed, and your character and account stuff get unpacked at the other end)

Then nobody will ever be able to break their account/guild/character in the future by accidentally packing in the game because they manage to accidentally type the command into chat while they're talking about moving house, and so many potential glitches should be avoided.

Because the game code doesn't allow it to do it the easy way.

For the time being they didn't implement something.
They told us the most general ideas about how the process should work, but they still don't know themselves how it would be actually implemented.

Also, you probably won't need the alternative option in the transfer tool since it looks like it will be simply impossible to transfer normal unpacked character like at all. Therefore, there should be no mistakes on the part of the players.

I don't get why people are clamoring for a more UI-y pack option. Does anyone really want a tumble-icon level quality method lol? I think a /pack, while feeling old, would LOOK better.

as long as theres an ingame notification, like that guild level announcement, then the players, even those that dont read forums should be fine.
add the notification also to the quest-display near your minimap, and maybe let cordo do a nice voiceline:

"the end of the world is nigh! heroes, "/pack" your belongings, the planar transportation network will operate soon!"

use whats available, make it memorable so that people "get" how to do it, done deal.

Sorry, I just can't get the image out of my head of a bunch of Windows users in a state of complete system shock after seeing a Linux terminal...
😂
It's OK I think everyone playing this game is old enough to have been using DOS command line
