Packs to get for returning player

Hey folks,

Coming back after a long time away, 2016 ish. I remember I had all the packs up to that point and at one point got Mists of Ravenloft. What other packs should I be on the hunt for in terms of good xp/loot?

Thanks

Sharn is probably the best xp, commonly ran in late heroics.
Dread or Vecna Unleashed has the best endgame gear.
Saltmarsh and Feywild are probably the easiest to skip, both in terms of gear and leveling xp (although heroic fey gear is still nice to have)

Do you mean packs specifically as in not expansions? Or just whatever? Xpacs are always going to be the best because it's the biggest pile of named loot. You can get them for points but it's usually a lot more. Best bet is to wait for black friday in Nov where stuff will go on big sales.

Oh good call, Nov isn't that far off.

All depends what you are looking for in a pack, and there are several valid metrics (listed in some order here)...

1) A source of XP. Some packs provide better XP than others/F2P quests; if you are on the TR train or your play time is limited, this can be important. You'll also want to consider whether packs offer Epic play (past Level 20) and/or Reaper play - not all do.
2) Named Loot. Each pack is a "ymmv" thing, but some are clearly superior, depending what level you're looking to fill.
3) Fun and variety. It's a grind to run the same quest all the time, and often a guild/group/friends will have their own personal favs
4) Favor (Total and/or specific Patron) - self explanatory. If this is what you're after, you have to pick and choose to match.
5) Sagas - a guaranteed source of Guild Renown and +1-3 Skill Tomes. See http://ddowiki.com/page/Saga for full info on Sagas, on what packs you need, and what level range each Saga falls into.
6) "Timing" - I'll start by saying this is below everything else for a reason. Imo, it's always best to grab the packs that you are about to need - right at or a little above the current level of your character(s).
7) "Just Because" If you own most of the content and just want it all, regardless.

Note: If you're waiting for a deal, the big sales are the the June/July "Summer Sails Sales", and the late November "Black Friday/Black Monday" (post-Thanksgiving for those from the U.S.) sale, followed by a mid-winter holiday offering. Sometimes these have packs on sale, sometimes not - nothing is guaranteed here). Discounts of 35-50% are common on (some) packs during these sales. And, occasionally, random sales throughout the year will also surprise us with deep discounts on one thing or another. Problem is... you never know "What packs?" (or other items) will go on sale. Good luck.

(The above was paraphrased from this old thread, see for expansions on these ideas, and some specific comments about older packs https://forums-old.ddo.com/forums/s...e-Packs-quot?p=6123730&viewfull=1#post6123730)

Thanks for the feedback. Waiting for sales does seem to be a re-occurring idea. As far as what I'm looking for, mostly fun, xp and good loot. Eventually would like to have them all again as I did before my hiatus.

when i returned last year, I was recommended, Feywild and Sharn
>i bought Ravenloft 1st (love it still, though gear sets are funky to fill all your gaps) +it drops filigrees + a sentient gem in the saga
>between Fey, Sharn, and Saltmarsh... I'd pick saltmarsh. the quests have an older school D&D feel/some good items that can be upgraded to lvl20 for epic TR ing.
>Fey a close 2nd, it grows on you and is pretty cool too and challenging enemies+ it has raids people still post up in lfm's(though making a Fey set can give you a headache because of the different season suffix's) +it fills a good place for heroic items and xp's
-Sharn seems to have a dedicated following and good items...but it seems more because of the XP's and some items that drop. The quests never rang my adventure bell, personally. The story is Knots Landing with warforge actors. But it is popular for people to pug.
>Dread is still the go to for customizing lvl32 items to your build. Some rag on the Dino enemies, but I like the different environment. +Dinos are in MM1 in pen n paper. It will take quite a few weeks to gather enough bones to fill those items in with dino augments.
>Vecna... hmm there's potential there and people who bought it like the quests. people have not really chimed in if the items really fill out their desires yet. The sets have great customization potential though. The heroic sounds like a fail...lame xp and bad placement at lvl18.

Dread wasn't in the store for points when I came back; that was #1 recommendation from players I asked. A 1/2 year later I got it. Now it feels like Dread items have been farmed by the hardcore players and they took them to other packs to use their cool top end gear. A lot less dread lfm's last few months on my server.
