Paladin with trap skills. First time builder with PAL 18/FTR 1/DRK RNG 1

First time builder here. My wife requested a quirky build with some requests:

-Paladin
-Able to trap
-Tiefling. She will not play human.
-Have a wolf to pull levers.

I have an OLLDDDdddd character on one of myaccounts that was a paladin/rogue (Batman Build??? I think it was called) but I don't think it would work these days. So I thought I'd build a Dark Hunter 1/ Fighter 1/Paladin 18

ANY help would be great in:

-how to improve the build GIVEN HER PARAMETERS.
-how you would build a trapper paladin if I am way off. I know many will just say "I wouldn't, bad idea". Thank you in advance for your input.
-How to finish EPIC levels. We only have one character in EPICS. I just don't have a clue...

You can probably take this build i followed a ayear ago at least for heroics level and make some adjustements for the wolf part. Human tree isn't that important same as insightful reflexes

For epics i'm using a mix between divine crusader + legendary dreadnought + undying sentinel only for self healing (liked to play solo to learn the game). Can probably help with feats depending on what you want on epics.

Given her requirements, why does she want to be a paladin rather than pure Dark Hunter?

In any case, you're on the right track. You need enough INT to max Search & Disable (which you have). I would dump WIS for more CHA; use Owl's Wisdom potions for spellcasting until you have good enough WIS gear. Also Insightful Reflexes is a wasted feat IMO; you're not actually INT-based and Divine Grace will give a big boost to Reflex saves. And that would let you move up Power Attack sooner. Stunning Blow is probably more useful than IR for the leftover feat slot.

I would go 5 dh, 14 pally, 1 fighter (for feats). I like the t4 and t5 in dh tree, and you can pick up all the wolf upgrades. One wolf upgrade gives you a +wilderness lore bonus to trapping skills, which is nice.

THF is only gswords for a tiefling. Bad move to go that route for OP, especially if she doesn't have sos/esos. Leaves her with the standard favored weapons from kotc.
Quarterstaff as well. And while I do agree that TWF is the stronger path, the OP is the one gets to manage wife aggro. So this may be an important piece of information for us to help them out.

They have to pick aureon as a deity though for qstaff. Key thing. There are some pretty cool qstaffs out there, but I am unsure how you would get a dark hunter/pally mix working with one.

My bad. I left out THF as a need as it was in the build. She has started to play as a THF with eventual Greatsword when she gets Tier..3? KotC. But to make the build better for my future knowledge, would you say that TWF using Tempest be a better play? I'm guessing there would be a stat change needed as well....As this is a first life from scratch, there are no Named weapons OF ANY KIND currently. She will likely end up with Barovian stuff at Lvl 10 unless and until she gets better.

Thank you all so much for improving this character, as well as giving me insight into how to build.

KotC's Imbue only works with Favored Weapons, but Dark Hunter's Bleed the Weak works with anything. So you can use any 2H weapon with this build with BtW and switch to KotC's when you have greatswords. EDIT: it's 4 APs for BtW + wolf pet so she'll have both by the time you leave Korthos.

I'll let others argue whether THF vs TWF vs SWF is more optimal for leveling. But the ranger 5 / paladin 15 combo combines the best bits of the Tempest tree with KotC enhancements + Zeal + Holy Sword. Downsides are it's a more-backloaded build than either pure ranger or pure paladin (since you have to wait until level 19 to have both Holy Sword and T5 Tempest); and it's more stat-intensive since you need DEX 17 for ITWF/GTWF, high CHA for paladin abilities, and high STR for damage. [Unless you have Feydark Illusionist, in which case you have the option of CHA to hit & damage, thus dumping STR.]

The main advantage of THF is strikethrough. The only class that can get strikethrough outside of THF is the ranger via the tempest enhancement tree. Since you're investing in a Ranger, it makes sense to look at. It would also help your skill purchases as Disable Device, Open Lock, Search and Spot are all cross class skills for paladins.

Also, there's a more robust Favored Weapon selection by going that route.
Examples:
  • Longsword + Battle Axe + Heavy Mace + Morningstar + Warhammer: Adept Combatant + Knights Training
  • Longsword: Sovereign Host + Knight's Training
  • Warhammer: Onatar + Knight's Training
  • Elf (Not Drow) + Undying Court: Scimitars (With built in easy access to DEX to hit and damage)
  • Drow (Not Elf) + Vulkoor: Shortswords (With built in easy access to DEX to hit and damage, or Shadowblades)
  • Daggers: Follower of Vol (Plus has Vistani built around it.)
They have to pick aureon as a deity though for qstaff. Key thing. There are some pretty cool qstaffs out there, but I am unsure how you would get a dark hunter/pally mix working with one.
I wouldn't invest any further than Follower of Aureon. It's mainly a bludgeon DR breaker unless you're using the Eidolon or Outburst.

Imo, longswords are the big win. If she _desperately needs to be tiefling_, twf longswords are the win.

1. holy sword + knights training == awesomeness
2. tempest
3. there aren't any OMG AMAZE longswords, but they are all really useful and generally easy to get. Even as an absolute casual noob, it is still easy to get worthy longswords.
4. dinobone longswords
5. dryad has a good pair of longswords, blackrazor, vecna drops, rloft free swords, fimbric (actually a really nice one for quest drop), syranian if you have mats

saekee

long live ROGUE
Sometimes builds are too complicated and it is easier to just get a new wife. Best ones like pure barbs or clerics (avoid FvS-types).

Soulrazor?

Not trying to be pedantic, just making sure I understand. If it is the one hander, would you put that in the offhand as it's lower base damage than IoD?
Yea, Soulrazor as one-handed sword, you're correct.
No, it must be used in primary slot with Alchemical in second. Firstly, LynnTonquin already talk about return old [W] dice to KT raid weapons, it must do they base damage better than IoD weaponz, secondary, it can be upgrade to +4 Mythic Weapon boost, tertiary, Overwhelming Stealer of the Soul provide very good bonus to MP and damage output and have nice Legendary PK effect too. 8)

For boss fight you mebbe (only mebbe!) can will need swap to IoD sword.

Another good option is Flow in your offhand for the Guardbreaking proc. It's very nice Vs single opponents in particular.

(Been a while since I used it myself but recent feedback on another thread suggests it is still very viable ?)
