Playable Kobolds?

I know! All these so-called "playable" races, and only two with tails! Unplayable, I tell you!

I'm pretty sure people asking for kobolds are trolling, no one would actually want to play a scaly rat. What's next, a playable frog?

I'm an EQ alumnus, I'll play a frog, a lizard, a rat, I love being a little creature. Or a big creature. I love diversity and specificity.

In you trying to imagine a ridiculous extreme you've only named a thing that I also genuinely enjoy

The point is that almost every option is just "human" or "human-lite" in terms of appearance. Even Warforged are done by a very human style plan. Tabaxi's there but it's just one choice in a sea of whatever that redheaded protag from Jedi Survivor was.

Took awhile for my account to be log-in-able but I've been part of this thread for awhile kind of quietly lmfao
There's always a race in an MMORPG that people are theatrically awful towards. Gnomes in WoW, Lalafell in FFXIV. Even in this thread I see folks referencing the kind of theatrical culture of rejection that the idea of playable kobolds lived in for a long time. Usually, it's rooted in real-world stuff that is pretty sussy, like...people making claims that "every lalafell player in FFXIV is XYZ type of specific criminal IRL". Stuff I think is not really appropriate to reference here.

To be so clear, that kind of theatrics is a very different thing from people genuinely not wanting these things in the game! Some people don't like whimsy, and some people do - the most important questions are "can you have fun with this" and "do they belong in the setting", and both answers are really genuinely yes, regardless of whether or not people decide to go "urr urr another thing to kick from every party". There's tons of kobolds in lore, there's tons of room for them in Eberron, and there're a lot of ideas for ways to make the gameplay fun without spending a ton of time decoding the "fantasy racism" of it all. There are loads of friendly kobold NPCs in the game already. That's a moot point.

Source: I ran a stream series for like half a year focused entirely on DDO and the addition of playable kobolds, as a kobold VTuber, and got a lot of eyes on the game and made a lot of content around the idea of a playable kobold. I am not a kobold on stream anymore but this is still close to my heart.

In case y'all were wondering, this kind of dedication and passion is what keeps me in this thread. She's right and she should say it! (And she did, so I'm amplifying it)

I want more quests with the kobolds talking (they crack me up), not necessarily to be one. But if it gets decided to make them a playable race, please-please-please make male and female versions to pick from! I hate being called "dude".

LOL, that was chalk-nails jarring when young girls started calling each other "dude" about 10? years ago. Every time I heard it, I wanted to yell "stop that!"

Caught myself calling a young woman "dude" the other day and no one batted an eye -- just kinda slipped out (omg, the horror! ). Culture/language shifts catch us all eventually. ><

Very good point. I don't even care if their models are the same as long as they get flagged properly.

I would think the gender distinctions might be pretty subtle in kolbolds? If this were typical animal kingdom stuff I would think male kolbolds would be smaller than females, but maybe have more vibrant colors???

I like to think they'd start to emulate other cultures when living abroad, so they'd wear clothing cut for their gender, or paint their faces in place of makeup to assist with presentation. Remember the cartoon logic of sexual dimorphism: eyelashes mean girl

To answer this question seriously, shinies may be analogous to resources, and when resources are plentiful, it encourages communities to expand! More shinies equal more kobolds, not because they come from shinies, but because shinies equals both snack and nap, and have all three, have happy kobolds

From the Draconomicon 3.5 edition ~ Kobolds have the Draconic type and are descended from dragons so that explains their shiny loving attitude.

iirc They could also evolve into dragons by taking the right class/feats? (I do remember they can get wings with a feat and upgrade them medium/heavy weight wings.)
