Playable Kobolds?

/not signed

Let us play any class and race we want for a past life feat and then we can talk.
Maybe something along those lines like grouping the races into the the six stats and choosing from the grouping. for example there could be 5 races in the dex group but you only get credit for 9 lives from the group for the 3 skill bonuses, 3 dex and 3 ap. so you can run 3 lives of your favourite 3 or 2 lives of 4 plus one of the 5th to get the max bonuses.

kobolds, bullywugs - guys there are iconic player races we don't have yet that would be way better - Duergar - how do we not have duergar? Kalashtar? Changelings? Like there's literally a dozen - githyanki - that would be way better than bullywug or kobold. my opinion.

Then make a thread for one of those

This kobold thread

And we will no longer yark in the dark

We will stand up to our full height, all three feet

And we will say we deserve to be playable

Why should there be another race at all?🙄
This is a good point. All current races should be converted to elf variants before we can get any new races.

Suggestions for new race names:

Elfborn
Dwelf
Gnelf
Elfling
Elfsimar
Orcelf
Half-half-elf (formerly known as human)
Tielfling
Elfforged
Shelfter
Elf-taxi
Elfforged-with-sharp-edge
Razorelf
Deepgnelf
Scelf
Purple Elf Knight
Shadar-Elf
Elf-blazer

Uska is correct. Kobolds were originally weaker humanoids like mini goblins. This was in the original AD&D Monster Manual and even the first Gold Box games Pool of Radiance.

They were recast as being dragon related in 3rd ed A&D.

Even now I think of them as wee goblins because that's how I first came across them.

I just checked the 1979 edition MM (4th.ed) online, and there was no reference to kolbold's having any relation to gnolls, and based what I'm seeing is that these references precede this. This is some really olde stuff... being referenced.

This article shines probably the most light I can find on them (& is quite good!)

More on the visual evolution of kolbolds:

I personally envision kolbolds as having canine & draconic aspects to them. Stifle-jointed legs, hairless, a more draconic nose (not dog), subtle scaling on skin, and small (vestigial?) horns on head (amount & size very per individual, but all on the smaller/subtle size). This doesn't quite gel with any certain art or illustration, but pulls from several I have seen over time and is really just an amalgamation of them, and what I would like to see. 👹

Maybe not directly be related to gnolls but the old humanoid hierarchy iirc was something like...

kobold<goblin<orc<hobgoblin<gnoll<ogre<giant

Was a long time ago, 30-40+ years, so that order may not be entirely accurate or complete, but I think the chain holds pretty true and both kobolds and gnolls were in it.
