Question regarding red names and fortification bypass

ok thats not right. i was getting hit for 75 to 110. why are you taking 4 to 5 times my damage?
At epic? You are very lucky. I was getting hit for 75 to 110 in heroic. And in a team I got hit once for 1000+ by a reaper at R5 so you really are lucky.

If I was only getting hit for 75+ my wizard would speed through ALL epics.

But that's Ok. Instakill aside, I have hit monsters for 11K+ with a single spell strike

Fort at cap is a little complicated. Enemies have fort bypass, AFAICT, a little over 200 is enough for everything with normal fort bypass (wolves, rogues, etc.). Most things, less is fine.

Some champs have auto-fort-bypass. Nothing you can do about those other than not letting them hit you.

Some red names reduce your fort (most notably, that chipmunk in dryad raid, but quite a few things can do it). That chipmunk also has at least 100 fort bypass on higher difficulties and a large multi crit, which is a nasty combo. That will show up as a debuff in your bar.

Veng reapers (when they blow up and buff monsters) give 400% fort bypass.

Therefore, the key fort breakpoints are 100 (safe from normal mobs), ~200 (safe from sneak attacks), ~300 (safe from everything that isn't auto-critting), and *maybe* 500 (if you're in a position where you can get that, which isn't common without being a pure tank and having the reaper clickie). I'd try to run at least 120 ish on a DPS, aim for 200 if you can.

yeah the griffons do be a bit tough but I dont see how they 3 shot u lol
I get 150 dmg in r1 (100Prr give or take)
Yes. That's exactly the damage I was taking from those griffons. It was kind of manegeable until I was crit for 450 damage.
And that's why I created this thread. Seems I'm indeed lacking more fortification.

EDIT: I'm also considering to switch from Lich form to Wraith. Seems the only thing that can kill me now is strong physical damage, and Lich is giving me a lot of MRR/saves instead. Maybe with more fortification and incorporeality I'll be safer.

150 enhance
75 insight
37 quality
30 PL Stance
0-12 Defender Tree
75 DC
50 US
15 Past life

90-100 Reaper Boost or elemental/undead/construct form/sentience

Ok now this makes a lot more sense. If you aren't simultaneously using almost every single source of fortification, you can get 1 shot by a vengeance mob.

Also, griffons specifically have a Great Sunder attack (as do some champs), so whatever your starting fortification, it might drop in-combat.

Tested 500. I dunno what the number is, or if there is one, but 545 isn't it for vengeanced dooms. I'm not sure any character that isn't pure tank blocking with a shield can consistently survive 1 hit from a vengeanced doom.

545 worked on one vengeance doom attack here:

But not here:

So if there is a number, it is 600+. Weirdly, tanking on a SDK 20 rogue assassin+acrobat feels better than tanking on a melee paladin, because in the vengeanced doom scenario you can just hit uncanny dodge. Plus you have triple dps.

Focus on dodge, not fortification, prr, or hp for mitigating critical hits on your melee characters. At a high level, it is the only defense that can (randomly) work.

I mean, a 8.7k hit with 355 PRR is totally survivable on a reasonable tank, but you're right that you should not be taking hits from veng dooms ever on melees, and if for some reason you're in melee with a veng doom, you pop hood and pray.

Non-veng'd dooms are more common, and avoiding crits is relevant there. Same for plagues.
