Ranger Caster - Surprisingly legit? (Epics only)

Hey there, sometimes I like to make strange builds and sometimes I like to start with a premise and look where I end up. In fact, I never played Primal Avatar as a main destiny and when the last archetypes dropped, I was almost there to combine it with the obligatory Blightcaster, even though PA certainly wasn't the best fit. Then it hit me... what about combining it with Dark Hunter instead?

Primal Avatar has some good synergies with ranger.
  • The mantle works on spellcast, melee attack, and ranged attacks
  • As a ranger, you got several feats you could spend in the metamagics without losing too much of the rest
  • Carrions Swarm and Shard Storm doesn't care about DCs and Mass Frog doesn't care about your highest spell level for its DC
  • The Thorn spell do pair nicely with both fighting styles, Arcane Archers like to get their acid spellpower high and melees do profit from the bunch of temporary hit points regularily.
  • As a Dark Hunter, there are some pet-related bonuses to be found (mantle on pets and summons
  • Some imbue dice on the mantle
  • Spellpoint bonuses here and there, but SP isn't much of an issue with the cost of most of the stuff

Just remember to get Quick Draw to combine cast and shoot/hit quicker and try it for the ride. My current build went very niche, but even with the pet focus and Dark Hunter as the main tree (both I won't recommend, pet is now a bit tougher with level 24 enhancements), the early epics were easy and fun and now imagine if someone sits down to actually perfect the ranger PA-combo.

Here is the build, but like I said: More the gimmick side by design.

Will report how it is in endgame, though I don't have high hopes for it and didn't plan to stay long there this time.

Well, what to say... I'm at cap, and while my reaper prowess does stem a lot of my experience and points, it still is true that I can run r4 with just hires and little problems and higher reapers in a group and still provide a lot, because this build is an above average all-arounder.
  • Mediocre heals with metamagicked Administer Critical
  • 80% of the damage of a TWF ranger
  • 70-80% of the damage of a caster
  • 60% of the damage of a ranged character
  • Ability to act from close and afar, depending on the situation
  • Debuff on failed assassinate, but I usually kill suitable mobs with the DC in the 100s
Only thing not working in high reaper is Mass Frog, rest is always surprisingly well, as long as I remember to act second and let someone else pick up the aggro, though killing veng reapers is easy enough and dooms are only a matter of focus (how to kite, when to put another stack of Carrion Swarm, etc.)

So yeah... without a solid fundament of a build, pulling this off would be not possible. I'm now really interested to see how this works if someone would actually put the work into it and make it a proper build instead the hurried one I put up for some chaotic fun. Also debating, how long to stay on endgame, as it proved to be surprisingly fun.
Maybe I will try it with an archer build when I TR my archer toon for another ranger life.

Btw, buffed Teal survives Vengeance Circle on r6 with the buffs.

Was talking about Teal, the Dinosaur Gold Hire, but surviving a circle just takes some effort. I wish we had access to the old forum, as there was my Tankbarian build, but let's count the aspects that makes a character survive those:
  • HP obviously, the more you got, the more wriggle room
  • The circle does evil damage, so it's subjected to Evil Absorption and MRR
  • Barbarians have the edge, as they get a flat % damage reduction (means, each point MRR is also worth more)
  • Getting temp HP, Radiant Forcefield or other panic buttons can work, but usually circle strikes because you didn't react in time

Thanks Pan. ?

My barb isn't a tank but has over 6k HP in reaper, and the only way I've ever found to survive a Vengeance circle is not to be in it. That's mainly R10 to be fair though.

So I guess I was wondering if there is a finite range of damage the circle does, as whatever it is seems to be more than I can muster. ? I just assumed it was scaled to always do more than whatever anyone had, so was instadeath for anyone inside and not worth trying to counter by build/gear, etc.

Interesting point around evil damage absorption though - I'll look into that. ?
