Runearms: A ranking post

Runearms, once an exciting thing to see appear in new loot, now something that comes along as rather bland and generic in recent loot.

Perhaps the person designing recent loot is in their early learning phases, or perhaps it was decided that the newest runearms would be generic for a while, it's uncertain.

So now, let's look back at some of the greatest hits in runearm history!

(Note: These rankings are subjective and based on personal experience and opinion and consider the minimum level of the item as if it was the level cap)

#1 Toven's Prototype
Toven's Prototype, the only runearm in the entire game that can have an orange or purple slot on it while also being able to get that alchemical air attunement effect or even Fireshield (Cold) permanent that happens to be quite helpful in raids with lots of fire damage. Sadly, this runearm was not made a part of the set that the legendary Toven's Hammer was a part of, but still it beats the legendary Toven's hammer! If you want it, this runearm can even get you a +2 Alchemical bonus to your intelligence stat! In the orange slot you get from selecting an alchemical elemental attunement you can place an essence of the spear of the Mournlands augment, or even a Facet of Psionic Intrusion as to boost the force type blast of this runearm while granting you some protection. Because of this, this runearm places #1 on the list! This runearm can smash breakables but only one at a time.

#2 Toven's Hammer
Toven's Hammer, yes, the original one you can craft onto! Unfortunately, you can not make it minimum level 20 so it can be crafted on with the newer shard suffix options, also it was never updated to the proper scaling for insightful intelligence stat, but nonetheless it's very beloved, especially for it having transform kinetic energy, and that rather fun lightening strike effect. Regardless, when building a level 20 gearset, this runearm is sure to offer a good option for gear optimization thanks to being able to craft onto it. This runearm can smash breakables, in fact sometimes even multiples at a time.

#3 Sir Squilliam V, Esq.
Sire Squilliam V, Esq, yes that runearm that looks like a squid! This runearm is great defensively speaking as it grants you a Natural armor bonus (Though you can get that in augment form now), Spell resistance +39, and cold resistance +51, on top of that it has Alchemical Water Attunement, belongs to a set, and while legendary Ice Shards Guard is meh due to being rather weak, it adds something I suppose. While the Salt shot is no Bee shot, it's a force type runearm blast (From what I understand). This runearm can smash breakables but only one at a time.

#4 The Disciplinator
The Disciplinator drops from the Vault of Night raid, sadly it was never made legendary or epic. This runearm is craftable and has a special hidden effect that critically boosts whatever effect that you craft onto it while innately having Physical sheltering +26, Fortitude+5, exceptional fortification +10%, and Smiting Weapons. While it has no augment slot, it's definitely worth getting if only for the massive boost it gives you for whatever you craft onto it. This runearm can smash breakables, in fact sometimes even multiples at a time.

#5 Machination of Madness
Machination of Madness, that runearm with eyeballs that shoots Bees! This is one of two items you can get insightful repair amplification from in the entire game, the other is the Celestial Amethyst Ring (Has a legendary version). Insightful repair Amplification though (That is currently not even craftable in essence crafting) is not the only thing great about this runearm, the Bees it shoots deal force damage that also cause a damage over time! On top of this, you get +141 to your impulse spellpower, this runearm charges 30% faster, you get a +13 natural armor bonus, and it has insightful evocation focus +3. Unfortunately if a lawful character equips this runearm they receive a penalty due to it having the taint of chaos effect on it. This runearm can smash breakables but only one at a time.

#6 Legendary Dumpster Fire
Legendary Dumpster Fire, made of rust and appearing as if made from trash, The only runearm in the game that dared to include rust damage in the blast it put out. Not only that, but the blast contains multiple damage types and the runearm weapon imbue contains two damage types as well. Then you get a shield bonus! This runearm is pretty well rounded. This runearm can smash breakables but only one at a time.

#7 Legendary Necromonicannon
The Legendary Necronomicannon is a fun runearm that looks great, shoots out books, gives you insightful shatter, makes you ghostly, and can trap your enemies in a soul gem! The weapon imbue this offers you is Evil based, and while this runearm does belong to a set the set it belongs to is really demanding and not as efficient at boosting your stats as other sets are. This runearm can smash breakables, in fact sometimes even multiples at a time.

#8 The Demon Engine
The Demon Engine gets this placement because of the Dripping with Magma effect, being a set item, and the melee range blast (As I am biased in favor of melee combat). As you likely know, Dripping with Magma is a high damage proc effect, and this Item belongs to a set and it bundles together fire and electric spellpowers as a single entry. This runearm can not smash breakables

#9 Dinosaur Bone Runearm
The Dinosaur Bone Runearm is craftable via the dinosaur bone crafting system. The blast can curse enemies in which is a bonus! The weapon imbue is evil, though honestly you would expect this runearm to have at least two weapon imbue types on it, but instead it has a scale weapon slot in which frankly makes you wish it instead had two weapon imbues and a Weapon Horn slot along side its Weapon Fang slot as such is what it would take for this runearm to have made it to the first place on this list. Luckily though, this item can get an alchemical elemental attunement effect and does belong to a set, however the set it belongs to is less efficient at boosting your stats than other set options and this runearm can't smash breakables.

#10 Knives Eternal
Knives Eternal is a fun runearm that shoots daggers and makes you rather spiky. Unfortunately, this runearm makes the list mainly because of the fun/novelty factor. While I wish we'd get more runearms flavored simularly to this one, we have not so far. This runearm had a lot of potential, but sadly it didn't quite get the design it deserved. If a runearm in this game were to receive a massive upgrade via the Catalyst crafting system, I would vote to bring someone on to modify this runearm for the catalyst crafting system using this forum post for ideas. This runearm can smash breakables, but usually just one at a time.

Cool list! I'm rocking Ol' Ironsides myself.(ranged arti level 17 currently)
Exploding cannon shot is best for smashing breakables, however at your level I would highly recomend farming the heroic version of the Dumpster Fire runearm, they actually modified the blast so it moved less slowly.

I don't want to be negative, but I find it irresistably funny that your two main criteria for making the top10 rune arm list seems to be which passive stats you can get on it and how good it is at breaking boxes.

This says something about the state of rune arms (and spell damage in general, from which they inherit). It's a box breaker with stats.

I want a rune arm that shoots straight and melts faces. Where is that? I'm actually curious since they reworked the shots if any of them do decent damage.

Craftable runearm at level 5?

Yeah, should definitely be in the Top 10.
Not to mention being an amazing box breaker

This person posts nothing but WF Artificer stuff and their suggestions/etc are kinda weird /shrug

Your list seems to rely on never using their shot and that's fine, they really messed up runearm shots when they

a) Fixing light spirals (the most useless shot of them all) ended up bugging force/acid/book/tidal shot. Likely not related but it was the same update

b) Absolutely neutered the only shots that were actually any good lightning storm and trash shot (and side effect bugged electrical leash). Mind you lightning storm (and exploding cannon shot) still hits the floor and fizzles most of the time unless you jump

c) Nerfed 3/4 of the rest of the runearms by maxing out their damage at 2d. Some still do 5d on charge 5 even on heroic but those are obviously the exceptions or most likely ones that escaped their notice.

d) Pretend like none of the above ever happend but that's on par.

I used to play a melee artificer with the old offhand versatility and Toven's to do actual damage with a runearm but I guess them shills and bad strimmers really convinced dev runearms are the best thing ever OP af and macrotechnic was gonna make them even more OP and all casters ever would run around with infinite SP using runearms and now... they are all so terrible they are basically glorified orbs with breakable breaking potential. Also macrotechnic drives are UGLY and ruin the looks please remove the visual.

1. Strinetti.
Gets you 30% ransack xp from lvl5 to 36.
Dragon's keeper from borderlands was supposed to be breaking breakables but sadly it doesn't even light grease on fire :/

Also strinati's was originally craftable and you could make it min level 3 with the old masterful shards. Same with khyber's fury *cries*

PS No mention of legendary frozen contraption? I thought lamordia crafting was all the rage right now

Just sold it because I've gotten it so many times I thought it was still trash 🤣

The Astral Projector is a staple rune arm for me in heroics (works well on reapers). Ditto for Strinati's (I have to jump-shoot with the shorter races on any of the splody type arms).

Glass Cannon is a dual imbue and is nice in epics (good for breaking stuff too)

St. Mu Ray's Fire is just a fun one. Looks like it's shooting photon torpedoes kinda. Good arm for e-casters perhaps.

I keep stuff at range if possible, so generally speaking short throw arms are a pass for me.

Glass cannon is great and would be on the list if it were even one entry longer. That dual imbue is great.

In my opinion the dino rune arm is the best in the game and 2nd place isn't even close. 20% Alacrity, 3% profane doubleshot, earth attunement and 2d6 sneak attack on top of the other benefits.

I haven't seen anything that can match that.
