I have complicated feelings about this. I'm a person who thinks there should be some exclusivity to things: I don't have the Elite Spider Cult mask and those who do have it should be able to wear it with pride! I do have the HCLS1 bloody footprints and am super proud of those. However, I'm also a person who does not get mad at others getting a better deal or opportunity later on. In fact, I'm happy for people who missed out or couldn't afford something being able to get it for less later on, whether that be expansion packs, adventure packs, or these coffers. Yes, I paid full price and felt it was worth the money, but now more people are able to enjoy those same things... isn't that a good thing?
The whole "I suffered therefor you must also suffer" is a strange concept to me, especially when a big talking point in real life is to make things better for future generations. "I worked hard to make things better for me kids... and now that things are better for my kids, I see they are enjoying the fruits of my generations labor and I hate them for it! Darned spoiled kids! I suffered so they should too" w-what?!
I do understand the mixed feelings on this. Do I begrudge people that they have something I don't or that they can have the same I have?! Heavens no.
But every special edition is based on exclusivity and rarity. Added to this in a game where farming plays a big part shortage is extra special. There is some kind of social recognition and prestige involved, as well. And there might be a certain degree of addiction to collection, too. DDO has the tendency to foster that kind of behaviour. And last but not least there might even be an increase in value of the account happening.
All this drives the price of a special edition higher.
This special edition is called a Patrons Coffer and the name alone shows a certain involvement into the game (Prestige). Most of it is cosmetics so you get a cool look out of it not everyone is able to farm ingame (Prestige, Exclusivity, Rarity). People would like to enjoy that kind of
special forever (Shortage).
But as people pointed out it is a digital good. You can't enjoy it forever but at least for a while and for some that while was not long enough. And on top of that you can get that
special way cheaper. Both make this not so special anymore.
With this move SSG took a way a lot of the emotional/psychological value of the coffer; at least 35%

. And that is why people feel betrayed.
Totally understandable, imo.
Cheers,
Titus
