It combines everything that's in the origin shared banks into the new server's shared bank.

Shared bank slots are the same for every server. Merging does not impact this.

So, like misterski said, if you have more total stuff than your shared bank can handle, those items will go into overflow.

Also, FYI, if you transfer from two different servers into one server, then the items in the shred bank from the second transfer will not stack with the first, making it more likely that you will overflow. It is a little tedious to stack everything, but nothing seems to get lost...yet.
