Someone on Cormyr has my name... and it kinda sucks

Do the Everquest name reservation system and make money off the people that care about their name that much. You take the person with the name that has had it the longest on any server and you let them reserve first for a fee. If they don't then the next person can and so on down to making it a free for all if no one reserves. But then people can't whine as much.
I hope SSG bans everyone who attempts ransom, and I certainly encourage reporting those who fall prey to ransom attempts.

I would never pay a ransom for a character name; there are millions of names to choose from for free, but this behavior should not be allowed and should be severely punished.

And recommending doing it doesn't seem ethical to me either.

Someone grabbed my name right as Cormyr opened and it never advanced past level 1 to this day.

I am not sure if someone else just wanted to reserve that name or it was a troll, but either way it's not even on the radar of concerns. People that matter will always know who I am based on the combination of my character name and guild name which is what really matters to me.

The actual name is unimportant as I can make as many variations of it as I need.

I feel for you. When the servers all moved in 2012 I was on an off spell and left it too late to register losing all my old characters including my favourite named one. On the plus side (I mean this genuinely) your posting this made me go and check on Cormyr and I have that name back - after 13 years - so thank you!

As I suggested some time ago, there should be a name reservation system, as I believe many players consider their character names to be important. This was especially relevant for the Hardcore server, but I think it would be a good idea in general. SSG could even generate some revenue by charging a moderate fee for name reservations.

How does a reservation system change anything? Unless it comes with a hefty fee.
You will still be annoyed if someone else reserves "your" name first.

No, what is disrespectful is when a long-term player on one of the primary servers is forced to deal with some theif taking their name and possibly compromising their account. Which is why newly created Cormyr accounts would need to have naming restrictions preventing such. Otherwise, every pre-exsisting account may as well just be deleted and walk away from the game.

BTW: Last time I checked, a toons name is unique across ALL DDO servers. Making duplicates a violation.

The only way you could have your account compromised is if your character name is the same as your login name, which would be nightmarishly stupid account security to practice. And you have no idea if someone "took" their name. It could be that this other person liked the name as well and maybe has it on their home server. If Drachmor plays on Sarlona and this other person has the same name on Ghallanda, who is to say which person has the better claim to it?

If they added a say a whopping $50 charge to reserve maybe TWO names and only TWO names per $50. I

It would deter almost all the trolls that like to take names so that other long-time players can't have it.

It would also force you to really think about which name you will pick and not create a spreadsheet of names just so you can reserve a bunch for when you get bored of your old name.

It would also bring in money for SSG.

...

It's a win.

My main's name was taken on Cormyr... just posting because, as minor as this is, it is honestly putting a damper in my enthusiasm (on both Cormyr and main server).

Originally, I wasn't too bothered, as I thought this would be VIP-only or a bit more temporary. Now, it seems Cormyr is transitioning to the premier experience, and I'm feeling kind of left out?

Wondering if anyone can relate!

(Also, wondering if anyone can think of a solution besides appending a number to the back of my name? but if it must be, it must be).
If it means a lot to you, you could try messaging the character with the name you want, and tell them that and ask them if they'd be willing to let you have the name. Most people are pretty nice about these things, from my experience, and many players aren't all that tied to their names. You could offer to trade them something for it maybe.

I had the same problem in 2009 when I started. I had a name from a game from the late 1980s. (It was the name of a djinn.)

This name was already taken. No big deal. I changed the name by repeating the last syllable. I had to repeat it 5 times before the game would recognize it.

Currently on Coromyr, I have to massacre the spelling for a couple of names almost to the point of unreadability to get the names I wanted. (Ironically, the name I wanted in 2009 was available, so I took it.)

I think another problem DDO has with naming characters is if the algorithm decides the name is possibly offensive. I get that the innocent youth need to be protected, but come on. Some of the best names are mildly offensive puns. I'm not advocating for outright profanity, but have you heard how people today talk?

The thing is most of the time the character name isn’t used. It just sits there at level 1 or whatever.

What prompted my thoughts was I mostly use finnish names for my toons in order to get the names that I want and or to get over the particular 'name has already been taken' -block during toon creation. On a server with a few thousand players even those seem to be mostly taken. I suspect most are abandonware. Online games shouldn't be museums for non-paying customers. If I stopped playing for a decade, I'd be ok with my names being taken by an active, paying and playing dude or dudette as long as the rest of the toon remains untouched. WoW Classic emptied their servers and destroyed toons slash guilds during my break of a year or so. That among other things prompted me to quit WoW, so naturally I have my limits on this non-museum thingie as well. 🤷‍♂️
And this is the reason why they SHOULDN'T transfer the entire database to new servers!

I'll be the first to refuse to transfer if they don't transfer astral shards, mounts, banks, etc. But this is different. Cormyr is a server that's been running for months. They can't just delete stuff from there to please you.

Why the obsession with Cormyr? There must be at least two more servers identical to Cormyr. Pick one of those. It's not that hard. Cormyr isn't special in any way.
And they have said they are working on the new transfer system to do just that! Repeated saying the same thing. . . . . . .

That´s a difficult topic. I know I would be quite annoyed too if "my" name was already taken, and I don´t think I would be happy with using variations of it...

I´m not sure about freeing up names after a certain time.
I took an almost 10 year break in DDO, I would have been mad if after my return my toons had to be renamed because someone "stole" my names.
Or I haven´t played World of Warcraft in at least 5 years, I don´t know if I´ll ever return, but if I do and I had to rename my characters, I might quit right away.
Definitely, I don't agree with offline renaming. I've just sent them a mail in hopes of having a conversation, and I think that'll be about the best I can do
