There is no such thing as balance in a game when people with 156 reaper points and 100 lives are in the same group with people that have 20 reaper points and 6 lives. There is nothing that can be done to balance that. And so, these attempts at "class balance" are pointless. Taking away fun abilities (AOE) is a terrible idea. More AOE abilities should be added. To every single class. Players like fun. And AOE is fun.
This whole "DC rabbit hole/balance thing" feels like busy work anyway. Virtually the whole player base has said, just remove the punitive spell power penalties on R7+. So all this hand-waving has to take place instead of rolling back the nerf. And at the end of the day, ranged is still going to dominate play.
While I agree you can't balance the crazy player gap with something like DC on a D20, they could do a lot better by making the three major archetypes of melee, ranged, and casters much closer.
Sadly, removing the R7+ nerf is not going to cut it with the proc nerf they just dropped. At least not without other changes. For the few people left at Cap playing DPS casters (that were not Tricksters), procs were what made them competitive. Casters were uniquely good at stacking procs with persistent AOE spells and the metamagic benefit. I lost about 15-20K DPS with that nerf, and was only semi competitive ~65% of meta DPS WITH the procs. This is in R1-R6 or raids, has nothing to do with the R7+ penalty. In R10, I was never competitive.
Without the procs, I am finally throwing in the towel on caster DPS; it's truly impossible to build now.
We will see what they do, but you can't have a "DPS" caster that has all the past lives, all the gear, and chooses a clearly designed DPS class like Sorcerer, Druid, Stormsinger, etc, and they are doing like 40% the DPS of meta builds.
The gap right now is way too wide. I am not even asking to be the "best", just give me enough DPS so that I can play what I like and not be a waste of space with less than half the damage of all the popular ranged builds.
