This effectively is already happening with me. I used to post a group every time I logged in. I was well known as a party host on my server and made friends with new players every life (since I was always meeting new players when posting groups for low level quests).Yeah I don't want DDO to fail, but milking the few whales is not it. Whales would be lonely ingame if regular players leave over loot frustration.
Now I play the game by myself with 3 accounts. When I get to level 13, I post for Desert Caravan followed by From Beyond the Grave (since I find those difficult to solo, particularly the second one). I post for In the Demon's Den at level 20 (though frequently end up doing it with just 1 other person if no one else joins). I post or join for a single epic run of the Vault of Night and Chronoscope raids. I post for one run of the 4 card quests when I get to level 34 (all of the above having all 3 of my accounts in the party). Then, the day or two before I TR I will join other people's raids to get some extra favor even though, as a Warlock, I contribute almost nothing to the party.
Everything else is solo. I went from being a valuable member of the community to someone that nearly doesn't exist. And why did I do this? Loot. I grew tired of running entire expansions and get zero items worth keeping. I started to play with a second account as well and found I was having more fun in spite of quests taking longer. I added a 3rd account at the end of the last life and I am liking it even more. 3 accounts means I average just over 1 named item per quest (which is what I always felt should be the drop rate, just like heroic borderlands). I still run entire sagas and get zero items worth keeping, but at least I have a chance of getting something with a reaper or higher mythic bonus.
The loot system has killed the social aspect of the game for me. Loot acquisition is slow an inefficient enough that I have sacrificed playing with others to increase the rate of getting loot worth keeping. At this point I am basically just a drain on the servers as I spend nothing and contribute very little to other players. And this is simply because of loot choices the developers made.
