Stochastic Stoic, a dodgy tank build

Current iteration on a fun dodgy tank. BTW, I can't recall who was calling dodgy tanks "stochastic tanks", but I appreciate the name. :)

This is not a push raid R10 tank; imho, likely only good to maybe R4 raids (maybe R6 with a full completionist), but it's a lot more fun than the classic style and has extremely strong hate. Like any R1 Raid tank, it can easily tank R10 quests.

It provides tanking, light debuffs, and trapping. Intended environment is low reaper raids with minimal gear swaps. Play is like a classic tank, but this one rarely turtles up; ie. block only when required. However, unless you're VERY quick and good at noticing the "tell", it can be wise to simply turtle up on LOB (the smack can be dodged, but even with IUD up, it's not 100%).

DPS is very high for a tank and thus so is hate. Guard-Up is also v.nice (again unlike most tanks). It's great for eating a known hit, like VOD rings.

TL;DR = 11 rogue (defensive roll) 6 fighter (kensei CM+1) 3 bard (SWF+Buckler). Hand-Axe @ 15x4 profile.
  • Desirable: Shifter (rage cast+regen for feast & unquenchable)
  • Heroic: T3 Shifter (rage cast+regen), 3 Swash (SWF+Buckler), T5 Acrobat (iDRoll HP dodge/cap), T4 Kensei (CM+1 dodge/cap), T3 HW (dex trance)
  • Epic: T5 US (HP PRR Renewal Guard-Up), T4 FotW (scream cutter unquenchable/heal), T3 SD (MDB Reflex)
  • Gear: 3pc Devil's Infernal Dance (Light Vecna) + Assorted MD sun/moon + Dino H.Axe with LGS Ooze (MPRR-10)
Gear swaps have reduced attack, spell, & hamp, but most are single-item pre-raid (no in-combat swaps)
  • curse immunity = suulo (drops 30 Hamp) for VOD and PN
  • poison abs = green abishai neck + i.decept ring (eg. n.wed), for DOV Hydra and Threats Snake
  • align = baphomet ring (drops qDEX), for KT
  • spell abs = platinum trinket (drops 30 Hamp), for Hunt
  • fire abs = glacier bracer + noct ring (drops 3 DS Dex), for Threats (2H2H doesn't get hot enough, but can use there, too)
  • trap: tiara+cc.hand+cc.trink (not for tanking while trapping, but can hit IUD if badly need to tank + trap)

Nice! I haven't considered a rage line for dodge tanks, most I've seen have included Monk and gone the Ocean stance line lol. I'm a huge fan of Blood Feast though, especially if you don't get hit as often. MRR being the usual weakpoint, but those can get over 100 where this one is as well.

I have to ask though: how are you not using SD strike for 15% uncapped Dodge? Is it still capped by MDB? I've only used on cloth builds, but assumed it wasn't. But going from 46% to 61% means you get hit about a third less, which is a lot.

Yeah, Quick Cutter is way better for holding aggro/dealing DPS but having more defensive options is also pretty nice. Although Guard Up sorta covers that niche, I mostly end up using it when helpless.

I've been running variations on this one for years -- long before covid. I've tried the T4 SD version with more dodge and this one is much nicer. The extra healing from T4 FOTW makes a huge difference.

Also, this is a Defensive Roll build. The mitigation is deceptive. Sub 50% HP it gains 50% mitigation on damage, which makes it pretty easy to keep tanking with low HP.

Very rarely tank beyond R1 raids (maybe R2 now and then) and the build can pretty much handle that without any outside heals. So, more mitigation does nothing.

If I was doing R3+ raiding, I'd start valuing mitigation higher and self-heal lower.

Ah, ED points. Right! T4 Fury is great. I mostly make builds for like first-lifes or my main (who is almost full epic comp) which makes it harder to eyeball the ED split. Fully agree in that case; if you weren't T4 Fury you probably should be doing Monk line and T4 SD (without heal-on-rage/scream rage value drops a lot, and 23% more Dodge goes a long ways between water and SD). But that's a different style of build lol, and doesn't seem to suit your goals.

Defensive Roll being good doesn't make any of the other defenses worse, just means there's less drawbacks for being lower HP XD As someone who frequently heals in raids (regardless of if it's my main role) it stresses me out a lot though - I don't want to leave the tank below half, but also it's leaving value on the table to not leave the tank below half? Probably Renewal is the solution lmao.

Yeah, designing for the content you're running is huge and very fair. My first tank alt (RL era lol) was for LH raiding so it's fully self-healing and throws party heals as well - but it doesn't do so well in Reaper raiding because it wasn't built for that. If you have what you need why not branch out more, and Quick Cutter is both solid DPS and incredible at generating threat :)

FWIW for raids r1 and lower I’ve self heal tanked pretty much most of them on any melee build that has US, or even just auto consecrate on lh raids, without any defensive specs like defensive roll, etc. just need to maximize your prr/gearing and you don’t even need to go out of your way to do so. On some raids where magic dmg is higher it’s a bit rougher in robes but you can do mrr cap items / elem absorb which helps.

Yeah, I love "how dare you" on DC for hands-free DPS heals. I have DPS that can do that kind of tanking, too, but it's fairly iffy -- great when all goes perfectly, not so hot if things go wrong; eg. pre-lag I'd use my dps to tank snake in threats. Now I use this char because it can live through the freeze mess and fix things.

PLs help, too -- especially a full epic completionist DPS will be plenty tanky for many LH~R1 raids.

1) the Bard rage triggers the heal from primal scream, I'm not sure if it triggers the blood feast filigree.

2) Defensive roll doesn't trigger for magic damage (AFAIK). You have a lot of good absorption mitigations but its a shame you cant work in a 30MRR cap increase. Or the increase from filigrees, or both.

I like the build a lot!

Thanks!

Yeah, you have to take care on magic -- DRoll is physical.

I have had higher MRR at various times (iirc, 170 at one point waay back), but I didn't notice much difference. I suspect the reason for not noticing is because classic tanks use Large Shields, which have a hidden 2xMRR boost, which makes a little more MRR very noticeable.

What I did notice immediately for magic mitigation was back when I started building in FACES absorb and then again when I added Alignment absorb -- noticed instantly in KT -- which I guess makes it AFACES (chalknails for the grammar inclined out there .. ;).

IUD is my preferred form of protection too. Very effective and low effort required. The only downside is getting it inserted in your build

LOL
