boo, needs a mobile phone to verify on the channel before I can even say hi.
Please change that as I don't have a mobile phone.
Unfortunately, we need this verification in place to reduce spam, protect against malicious activity, and prevent raids and banned users from easily rejoining. Not just as protection against some more hot headed players, but against outside sources as well, as this is set up as a public discord.

Hm, you speak like a mod.

The upside to the phone number requirement is that it keeps out spammers and people from using throwaway discord accounts to cause drama; the downside is that it keeps people with good intentions out.

My phone number was already associated with my email address on some mailing list somewhere long before I phone verified on discord. But each to their own for how they view privacy concerns.

It's true we are requiring phone verification for Discord accounts as an anti-spam, harassment, ban evasion, and anti-bot tool. While I can absolutely appreciate the position of those who don't want to provide a phone number, it is a requirement for this Discord.

It's not the first official discord server ever created. But it's first time I see the phone requirement. ?

Not willing to have any manual verification on a case by case basis?

You don't require phone verification for these forums. Why do it for Discord?

SSG already had a big enough problem with posting better, more accurate, and timely information on the unofficial DDO discord, Facebook and X than they do on these forums.

I suspect that will only get worse now that it's an official DDO discord. I hope I'm wrong, but I guess we'll see soon enough.

Also, it's easy and cheap enough to get burner VOIP numbers if someone really wants to spam or bypass a ban. Look at how many burner phone numbers the robocall spammers burn through constantly.

And until Cordo changed it to be a manual review for every new account here, these forums were also filled with spam and everything was dubai callgirls. I can understand why they want the extra step in the discord server.

At the moment no, but we'll see in the future if this is something we can do. Especially at the start I am opting for more restrictive, so I get the pushback, but this absolutely will cut down on spam and trolling (both from the community and external to it) so this requirement will remain in place for now.

That is unfortunate. I will be sticking to the unofficial one. There is an option to manually verify in the members list. It is pretty easy to see if someone is rolling up a brand new discord account. Been active on discord for 8 years, I'm clearly not using a burner account, lol.

It's almost like they don't know there are other anti-spam tools available for Discord and the forums, isn't it?
