The Official Dungeons & Dragons Online Discord is now open!

For some folks it'll just be a matter of people telling me who they are on the forums and their discord name that's been created long enough ago matching up and we can manually verify them, it's just that we don't have time to do it this weekend with the place just opening. We'll probably sort it through a quick ticket to Community Support for those who truly can't accept a phone number associated with their Discord account.

Just FYI I've had my phone number associated with Discord for about a decade and I can't ever recall getting an ad, text, or message as a result of it, but I'm not here to tell people how to feel about it. It's an important way to prevent spam, bots, trolling, and people rolling up alt accounts to attack others or maintain multiple "player accounts" to engage in bad behavior. Keep in mind that we aren't just doing this for the DDO community, but also because the Official Dungeons & Dragons Online Discord will likely be a publicly discoverable server soon, so we also have to consider the wider Discord userbase in terms of anti-spam and trolling.

Thank you everyone who has joined so far! We crossed 1100 members this morning and things show really no signs of slowing down. So far so good!

I signed up for the discord and when I went to verify my phone number it says I already have my number associated with my discord account and it wouldn't let me verify for Discord with it. I then tried my google voice number and it wouldn't let me use that either. What do I need to do to get verified if my Discord is already associated with my phone number? Thank you so much!
Something similar happened to me. I do not know if it was because when I first signed up for discord I used a different email and put my phone with it then forgot about it, or it was some glitch, but the following is what I did. (many reddits talking about this issue say the only hope is to contact discord support, so if the following does not work, that may be your only recourse).

First, have a second email ready that is not the one you are using with your main discord account.
Then use a web browser to log in to discord, but instead of using an email, use your phone number, then select forgot password.
It will ask for an email to verify with. Use your second email for this. If you try with your main it will detect a conflict error and fail to proceed.
Using both your phone and the alternate email, follow the instructions to reset your password for an account that will be using that alternate email.
Log in using that email, and verify that your phone number is linked to that account.
Delete that discord account.

This will free up your phone number to be used for your main discord using your main email. Log in to that one now and put in your phone number.

I suspect I did actually create an account with that alternate email, as it's one I have also had for a very long time, and the few things there did match what I would have done, I just forgot about it. I suspect this only worked for me because the secondary email I used was in fact already tied to that phone number. If you've never made a discord account before or your phone number is a recent/new one (that perhaps was once used by someone else), this solution may not work for you.

So for me when I have a phone number conflict (I swap my phone number through Discord somewhat regularly) I just add the phone to the currently-being-used account and it removes it from my other account automatically. Then, I'll re-plug in the number on the other account if I need it then.

Does DDO come across as a harassment community or full of people who are actively trying to evade bans? From my experience the community is older / more mature. I'm apart of a few community ran ddo discord groups, and maybe they can chime in, but they don't require the phone number and also don't seem to be having any problems with the community.
I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Just pointing out something. I moderate a FB page with over 800 members, the ONLY time the members have an issue is when a post makes it by me or the admin and a member(s) report it. THEY do not see the 20 requests to join by people that obviously do not belong that are declined. So, the members never see the numerous asses that only want to spam, cause drama or whatever. The SSG devs post in the DDO Discord then complain when someone @replies. This new "official" discord server is their way of controlling this!

Of course we do, they are also being used.
then why were people saying to NOT ping a dev? If a dev posts a comment and a person @replies to that comment they are being reprimanded for doing so? That is how DDO works, if a dev (or anyone) doesn't like being pinged (even on a regular basis) then the quick fix is to set a "Do NOT disturb" status OR the easy fix is for the dev (or whoever) to hit the Ban button. OR here's an idea, don't allow the devs to be visible on a "chat" channel during work hours

We don't have a formal prohibition on at-ing devs, but clearly the developers can't spring into action every time they are being mentioned or requested in the Discord. In general you can expect much of the team to have notifications turned off for general sanity as it just gets overwhelming and too distracting. But there are times it is appropriate, and times a developer might respond. In general, though, just don't @ a dev unless you absolutely have a reason to, and the reason shouldn't be "I want them to do a thing."

This is our opening weekend as well, and it's been amazing to see it spring to life, so thank you to everyone who wants to be a part of it! I did want to call out that there are audio chat rooms available as well, and it may be a good option for people who want to voice chat in the game with LFMs and general grouping or quick grouping even with friends.

The way it works is that there is a + Create Voice Channel tab under Voice Channels, and channels are dynamically created and destroyed when everyone leaves. You can send a link to either the Discord and people can manually join your channel or you can send a link to join the channel directly.

Discord's audio chat tends to be about as modern as it gets and it may work well for some people, and the system appears to be functioning well, although it hasn't had a lot of use yet, but a bit.

So what's the plan for the existing in game voice chat?

I joined, saw that there was the usual "select your roles, select your server" that some people like to set up, and immediately left. I have a personal policy of giving an immediate pass on any Discord communities that require some time to set things up rather than just start using. If it's not as easy to use as a forum I want nothing to do with it.

Rules on the voicechat in the official discord? Or is it based on chat by chat basis? (i.e. each chat created has their own policies and rules i.e. swearing or using obscene language?)

Yea, I can't join. Even trying to add my phone number results in a "one per account" error message, as people have mentioned.
