Two questions - sorry if already asked and answered...
(1) Are there particularly tough red named or such to fight with these golden motes i.e. be prepared...?
(2) Should I ensure I have the corresponding lute when I go find its golden mote? For example, I'm level 5 working on a winter flight lute - should I grab a novice lute and equip that instead before heading to Hijacked Haul? Is the lute durability bonus the same regardless but maybe I miss out on the (BtC) reward if I have a different lute equipped?
Note you can't bank the winter lute so it is "at risk" regardless
Yes, be prepared, particularly for Sky as that Iceberg feels quite cold. You do require the specific lute to active the specific golden mote, but it is not required to enter the area. On heroic you just need to be within 4 levels of base quest for Novice, Horn, Sky, or Flight and max level 20 for Knight (3 levels). You also need to be on Reaper to enter Sky.
Do we have pictures yet of the Summer vs Winter versions? Specifically to my interest, the unicorns and wings
Also, had a blue mote pop up after defeating the chief in Watch Your Step that would not activate. Tried the winter flight lute three (3) times. In case it is relevant, level 3 warforged artificer with pet, plus Elieri and Frogo hires on heroic elite.
Edit to add that it happened again on elite Misery's Peak, again with a blue mote. I did have a blue mote work in another quest, and all of the greens I have seen have worked fine.
So far no additional dialogue from the mote encounters appears to be hiding clues.. however, I'd like to take a note of what monsters people do encounter. Those may be the clue?
Noted encounters
Red Named
Bugbear and hound.
Orange:
Displacer Beast
Yellow Named:
Redcaps, Harpies, Goblins, Rats, Displacer Beasts and Bugbears.
thats 3 modules i dont have for the golden motes. anyway around this for solo? probs have to give up (especially the flight one as thats the biggest grind) on event without that chunk '
will still go for knight one and get a horsey as that one i can do
the yesterhill one i can do too for the sheet music, not interested in the cloak though
also for your encounters
very first mote i got (TTT epic r1) was a red named dryad as last fight, she took no damage from my most of my attacks.
epic strike (quick cutter) did full damage (orange damage numbers)
light damage from imbue (paladin) did full damage (orange damage numbers)
force damage from weapon did double damage (purple numbers)
any normal attack, whirlwind etc etc did 0 damage (yellow 0s crits or not)
boulders might did a small amount of damage (around 150-200 in yellow) only if i hit crit otherwise 0 damage too (yellow 0s)

So I checked if golden mote durability reward is only for the matching lute or if it is only the music reward that is specific to the matching lute. That is, could you re-run it with a different lute, not getting the music reward, but still get the (sizeable) durability buff on another lute. So I first ran hijacked haul with the novice lute and got the music and durability. Ran it again with the flight lute. Nope - did not work - got no durability (or music) the second time.
**I will be frequently updating this post as new information arises. All locations and details have been more or less figured out. Thanks SSG for a fun hunt!**
Well met adventurers!
In the newest event, Symphony of the Fey. Which has us searching quests and adventure areas for Musical Motes to charge up our lutes for rewards. What piqued my interest was... "There are also rumors of a special fourth Mote that offers a special reward, but their locations are currently unknown..."
In game, Hawthorn mentions Golden Motes
So I'm here to see if I can help share information and see if we as a community can come together and find these mysterious golden motes.
If you spot any or discover any clues, let us know here or you can follow the discussion on the Arcanaverse discord.
How do I find a Golden Mote?
Scattered throughout DDO, there are 5 quests that have something new in them. Either a new object or new section of the quest. They're fairly noticeable if you're at all familiar and look visually grabbing. In case the lead isn't super visible, there is also an audio cue that will be different from the normal quest music.
These will lead you to a new area of the quest you're in and opens a new Golden Mote optional.
You don't need to have the correct lute equipped. In fact you don't need a Lute equipped at all to find these, but you will need on to claim it and it does not need to have any advancement.
What reward(s) do I get for completing Golden Mote?
Each Lute has its own specific golden mote. Completing the very cool little side quest optional, the mote will able to be absorbed, granting up to 360 durability (my number was from reaper (skull level made no impact), with +50% xp pot, VIP, 5% Guild bonus, 5% Master's gift. un sure if all of that applies. but, it was consistent)
Additionally, you also get a Sheet of Music of the Fey. A non-equipable item that can be activated from your hotbar on a 90s shared cool down that will play a unique song from the event for awhile or until you enter combat.
Sheets of music are bound to character and exclusive. Once a Lute is used to collect a mote, it'll gain an effect noting such and will be not able to absorb additional golden motes. So you only get that burst of Lute durability once per Lute.
What do I do if I find a Golden Mote or Clues?
Screen shots are preferred. Please list the quest, difficulty, and which Lute you had equipped. Can post here or in the Discord. And if you're willing, mark yes in the quest tracker.
Only while equipped, the Lute of Summer Sky gains an additional information in its description. Noting that it can only advance or find it's golden mote on reaper difficulty.
Which suggests a few things.
- Each Lute is tied to a specific Golden mote.
- With exception to the Sky Lute, other lutes may not be reaper specific.
- The Sky Lute's Golden Mote is most likely to be found in a Legendary quest.
- There are 5. One for each Lute.
*note. Just because a quest can be marked as "No" doesn't mean its not possible to still find something. Human error, quests with variations, RNG optionals, etc.. could play a factor. So keep your eyes peeled.
Some ideas for places to check.
- Quests with Formians or Shadowfell themed.
- Very quiet places
- very loud and/or music focused quests.
- Places tied to the feywild.
Clues
Potential Clue: Sheet Music Items from Lamania
(thanks PurpleSerpent)
Existence of the Sheet Music items, which were previewed on Lamannia but don't have an obvious drop location. Based on Eoin-1's information, this indicate which lute is equipped for each
It's because you're hosting the images on discord. Discord changed their policies on external posting of image links about year or so ago; after 12hr (24?) they can't be viewed outside discord correctly (discord didn't want to used as an image hosting site). So you'll need to put them on imgur or some other image hosting site.
Just wanted to follow up on this one if you were able to confirm. I assume what your guildy saw was a Blue, Green or Purple mote and not a Golden one that had its own side quest?

Well... that's annoying. I was curious as to why some still seemed to work for me.. but appears that was just google chrome caching.
I know imgur is blocked in certain parts of the world.... so trying.. imgbox... free, indefinite hosting that according to my quick search should work everywhere. So hopefully all the images are fixed now and will stay that way.
Base quest level +3 is required for advancement for winter lutes at least (not sure if there is a restriction for summer honestly). Don't think it matters between heroic or legendary in terms of advancement amount or reward.

I have not tested Winter Lutes, but Golden Motes do not use the same exact rules. You are barred from even entering the area for heroic Novice, Horn, and Flight if you are more than base +4, you can get the durability at base +4. Sky you have to be on reaper mode which is also base +4 and the mote can be claimed on base +4. Knight restricts to max level 20 (base +3) so is back to being like a regular mote for that range but it is abnormal from regular motes because you cannot get durability from a regular mote during a heroic quest on a level 20+ character.
I think Mnemor meant the level gating that lutes get as they gain durability.
- I will add to remark that hopefully they do not change any of the rules during the event this year. It was an absolute nightmare having to retest everything over and over again last year because a few times they added new rules — so we had to keep reverifying stuff every week and get the word out about changes.
When I did the lanterns in Cormyr, they had maximum XP thresholds based on your level, so you needed to level up by 10, 15, 20, or 25 (for example) to progress further. If the XP thresholds for the lutes are very low, then it's not worth getting the golden motes on Heroics.
