Theorycrafting Raging Razorclaw Ranger

Recently TR'd into a Razorclaw Shifter; just because...wanted to try it out. Played around with a couple of builds and did not like any of them (all some type of barbarian build), and then it occurred to me that RS is really more better suited (IMO) to Ranger than anything else.

Here's why I think RS synergizes better with Ranger:

1. Shifter Rage gives you bonus to Strength + Dexterity (penalty to Wisdom) vs. Strength + Constitution (penalty to AC) for Barbarian rage. This gives you some options going Strength based or Dex based ranger...pros and cons for each, more on that later.)

2. Magic Fang: Rangers get it as a spell (vs. spending points for it in racial tree). This works even if you're not using handwraps as long as you're still in animal form (razorclaw is considered an animal).

3. Additional Favored Enemy in RS tree. Rangers get up to 5 favored enemies if you go pure; add another from this tree and Animals from Falconry for 2 measley points and you get +14 damage for a good majority of things you're going to encounter.

4. Second Claw in RS tree provides +10% offhand strike chance + 3% offhand double strike and works for any weapon, not just handwraps. So, theoretically you could have 100% offhand strike chance at level 3 in Tempest (just not with handwraps).

5. At level 14, Rangers get the Animal Growth spell (which applies to Razorclaws, since they are considered animals) and provides a +4 size bonus to Strength + Constitution...this stacks with the Shifter Rage bonuses. Spirit of the Beast in FOTW epic destiny tree doubles this bonus.

So... Strength or Dexterity based Ranger? Pros + cons for each:

Strength based: RS iconic starts with +2 Strength, and according to wiki, RS provides a passive +1 bonus to Strength outside of the active +4 bonus from shifting...not sure exactly how that works, but I'll just assume while shifting it's a +5 to strength. You can pick up +2 in cores from the tree. Animal Growth adds +4 (so potentially an additional +11 total by level 14) and SotB adds another +4 for a total of +15 at level 23. Let's assume you max out Strength on character creation (20), have no tomes, put all level ups into strength (+5 at level 20) and have no + Strength gear. At level 23, this is effectively a +15 to attack / damage / DCs. Downside is no trance, unless you multiclass 3 levels of Dragonlord and you have to remember hit trance before you rage which is a PITA.

Dexterity based: Shifter Rage provides +4; you can pick up +2 from tree, so total of +6. But you can get a Dex trance from Horizon Walker for 13 points...may be an issue for multiple reasons, but let's assume you have that tree and AP is not an issue. Let's further assume you max out Dex at 18 on creation, have no tomes, put all level ups into Dex (+5 at level 20) and have no +Dex gear. Dex score & modifier at level 20 would theoretically be 23 / +6. With trance ( half mod) that's +3 for a total of +9 to damage / DC's.

Obviously gear and choices in enhancement trees are going to impact ability scores / modifiers and bonuses...you may be able to get Strength up to a point where lack of a trance doesn't matter, or get Dex up to a point where it's comparable with a trance. I'm not going that deep into it.

Other thoughts:

1. You could forego handwraps altogether, still pick up a few good things from RS tree and do a traditional Tempest ranger...longsword, scimitars or whatever.

2. Multiclass Ranger and Fighter (Kensei) for handwrap build...14 Ranger / 6 Kensei, going T5 in Kensai for crit range / multiplier. Add that to bonus from RS tree for handwraps and could be decent.

Anyway...just some thoughts / ideas about RS beyond other builds I've seen, and genuinely curious about what other people have done with this race, which everyone seems to hate or ***** about, to make it viable / enjoyable to play as opposed to just grinding it out for a PL.

Thoughts / ideas?

Played a Shifter Dark Hunter before and it worked fine but there are a couple of caveats:
  • You need to drop rage to Disable Traps and cast spells.
  • Animal Growth is good but has a relatively short duration. It is annoying to cast around raging.
Overwhelming Shifting and the other Handwrap attacks are so good; and the animations on Razorclaw look awesome - so suggest staying with them. But you play whatever feels best tbh.

Dexterity based: Shifter Rage provides +4; you can pick up +2 from tree
You have every reason to be Strength-based. Razorclaws have a lot of initial strength and can pick up an additional +6 from enhancements (Power Rage, FotW) and +3 from items (raging strength). And another potential +3-9 while using an action boost (Curse & Dreadnought).

Multiclass Ranger and Fighter (Kensei) for handwrap build...14 Ranger / 6 Kensei, going T5 in Kensai for crit range / multiplier. Add that to bonus from RS tree for handwraps and could be decent.
IMO T5 Frenzied Beserker or Dragon Lord is better than the top of Tempest or Kensai on a Razorclaw. They get a unique stacking weapon multiplier with handwraps... abuse it!
Dragon Lord gets the additional benefit of a Trance (charisma).

Important Information:
  • Tempest: Anything listed as requiring "Dual Wielding" does not work with Handwraps. This includes: Growing Storm, Dance of Death, A Thousand Cuts and every PRR, MRR, hit or damage bonus in the tree. If dual wielding (not handwraps), it is beneficial to go strength simply because you will have more of it.
  • Horizon Walker: Don't see why can't take this tree for the trance and favored enemy... but other options include 1 level into Favored Soul for WIS trance or 3 Dragon Lord / 1 Cleric for CHA trance instead.
  • Animal Growth: will give a -2 to your Dexterity (-4 with FotW enhancement) which essentially cancels out the bonus from your rage. However additional bonuses from Tenser's Transformation scrolls and Primal Scream will put your dex out in front again.
  • Wilderness Lore: Multiclassing ranger doesn't sacrifice any wilderness lores. Meaning items with Bloody Thorns (or similar) are very useful.
  • Disciple of the Fist: This PL feat gives +0.5[W] to handwraps and a evasion clicky. Doesn't matter if you are uncentered. This may be something worth picking up if you can take it as Ranger gets TWF feats automatically.

Anyway...just some thoughts / ideas about RS beyond other builds I've seen, and genuinely curious about what other people have done with this race,
I also once made a Strength Sacred Fist 1 / Dragon Lord 5 / Dark Apostate 14 build. Sacred fist was simply there to get handwraps as a favored weapon and I stacked as much hit/dmg from War Soul, Dragon Lord and Sacred Fist as possible. It did cost me a +1 lesser heart and an alignment change to work. It was strong and had some healing support from Cleric (destruction domain to cast while raging).

Tip: unless Sacred Fists' enhancements specifically say 'while centered' they will work while uncentered. Even SF's Sacred Defender works like a normal pally does (i.e. wearing heavy armor or a shield).

14 DH/5 DL/1 barb, is great as a RC strength build. Really easy and effective life.

Even better at cap when you can disable the traps that the rogues & artificers blow (yes, this happened many times)

t5 DL usuals, DWS 4th core for crit range, t4 racial crit & damage etc. Take all the things that add to STR/rage/damage. Max search & disable + carry INT/DEX & skill swaps, leave INT as a dump stat as you get enough skill points.

I'm playing a razorclaw dark hunter 17/dragonlord 2/barbie 1 and I'm loving it. I'm using vistani but I can tell it could be awesome as dark hunter 15/barbie 5 handwrap build.

I find incredible synergies with ram's might and animal growth enhanced from fury destiny. Magic fang is awesome. I use horizon walker for trance and favoured enemy evil outsider, undead in vistani, fey in razorclaw and animal in falconry. I use tempest only for the improved deflect arrows (which I get from vistani, not tempest), dark hunter for wolf and imbue.

I played razorclaw shifter str ranger for a couple months, it was really fun in r10 questing, but raid boss dps was lacking. That's with standing 100 ds, good gear and all.

Imo just do a barb or dlord.

Dark Hunter 12 Dragonlord 5 with T5 DLord & DWS cores gives +1 critical range +2 critical multiplier. Using handwraps with Razorclaw racial abilities is another +1 critical multiplier. Do what you want with last three levels.

Max STR > CHA > CON. Use DLord CHA Battle Trance + Rage. DEX can be a dump stat since TWF feats are free from ranger, unless you want Dodge feat chain.
