Two months into Lagapalooza 2025

Ying

5000+ hours played
The lag has taken its toll:
  • My guild abandoned R10 DOV. Getting to the 4th head twice only to wipe because of a blademaster gaining 5 stacks while we're laglocked is soul crushing.
  • We've cancelled weekly raid nights. We started with "we raid until we lag" but that didnn't last long.
  • TRing and reaper XP farming is nearly non-existent. No one wants to play Russian Roulette with every quest to see if the game laglocks or rubbering bands.
  • Chill ransack timer has been up for two weeks for many of us. Zero motivation to suffer through gear farming for a game that is largely unplayable.
  • My long-time friends aren't logging in because they can't have fun when it lags. I don't blame them.
  • Zero motivation for me to try out new builds or create new build guides.
The server merge and expansion release should have been a revitalization of the game and strengthened the community. I was looking forward to playing DDO with old and new found friends. The way things are trending, there won't be enough of us around in a few weeks when the new raid releases. And we live to raid.

Patience and hope have been exhausted for many of us. I've played long enough that I don't have faith lag will be resolved any time soon. It's a sad state of affairs for a game many of us have enjoyed.

You are not the only one with frustration, Ying. Same here, it's been very stupid, they keep charging us VIP for a game that can't be played. I no longer have the motivation to play. All the bugs with the new crafting system in Chill of Ravenloft, lagfest wiping all the party, we lose time in a quest to get wiped when this lag occurs, and SSG just keep getting their profit. And you will see 1 or 2 defending what cannot be defended.

Unfortunately, this is the same for many of us. We have canceled raids frequently due to Lag. What we have noticed is less people login for raids, figuring it's a waste of time.

IMHO While this is getting fixed, and since *everyone* is having lag effect their play.
Add these things to try and balance it out.

+6 Treasure Hunter Boost
+15% Heroic Exp & +15% Epic Exp Or +5% buddy boost exp
+10% reaper Exp
+5% VIP exp bonus
Double Daily dice

This would all run constantly until the lag is fixed. What this does is balance out the player lost time and efforts. This also creates a bit of good will towards the community from the developers. We know you are working on it and trying to resolve the issues. In the meantime your playerbase is struggling with a subpar product that is creating a large amount of frustration. Why not try and make up for the issues?

Each Week
- Hand out 1-2 Superior Exp Elixirs Until resolved.
- Hand out 1-2 Cakes for Rezzing in quests you wipe in.

The game has lost ALL momentum for an expansion, a Server Move to 64 bit servers and server consolidation.

Sorry, the sad truth is the management team has done little to work with the team to make up for their issues. I mean seriously people are losing hours and hours of week and getting frustrated due to wiping.

FYI (thanks to Google AI!)

When a business provides free items or other incentives to customers to make up for poor service, the practice is called service recovery or offering customer appeasements. This strategy is used to win back unhappy customers, build brand loyalty, and repair a damaged reputation.

Why businesses use service recovery
  • Boosts customer loyalty: A well-handled recovery can turn a frustrated customer into a loyal one, a phenomenon sometimes called the "service recovery paradox".
  • Increases retention: Customers who experience a service failure but have their issue resolved effectively are more likely to remain loyal than customers who never had a problem.
  • Protects reputation: Proactively addressing and resolving complaints—especially those voiced on social media—can protect a brand's image.
  • Provides a learning opportunity: By tracking complaints and resolutions, a business can identify the root cause of service failures and fix them to prevent future problems.
Examples of appeasements
Customer appeasements are most effective when paired with a sincere and specific apology. Appropriate compensation should match the severity of the inconvenience. Examples include:
  • Refunds, gift cards, or direct deposits
  • Free products or complimentary services
  • Discounts or vouchers for future purchases
  • Complimentary upgrades
  • Extra loyalty points or credits
How businesses implement service recovery
A successful service recovery strategy often involves these steps:
  1. Listen actively: Listen to the customer's complaint to understand the full context of their issue.
  2. Offer a genuine apology: Acknowledge the mistake and apologize sincerely, showing empathy for the customer's frustration.
  3. Take responsibility: Empower employees to own the problem and solve it efficiently, without passing the customer to other departments.
  4. Solve the problem: Address and correct the customer's issue. Depending on the situation, this may involve replacing a product, correcting a billing error, or other solutions.
  5. Exceed expectations: Offer an additional token of appreciation, such as a discount or freebie, to show that you value the customer's business.
  6. Follow up: Check in with the customer to ensure they are satisfied with the resolution. This final step reinforces trust and shows a commitment to good service.

all the voices in my head are my own
any a-palooza should come with fun events.

can we get more of the bridge style protests (dance party) with fun guild/character names? or maybe we do some kinda letter writing campaign?

I mean, i know folk at SSG are trying & our protest won't accelerate anything, it's more of a way to give us something to do while we wait.

maybe we can get daily @Cordovan meetings where he just takes complaints for an hour...give us all a space to vent?!?

I’ve been seeing gradual improvement and still have hope. But I can see how if pushing raid skulls is your focus, the lag would be joy killing. The last two weeks most LH raids have been playable for groups I have joined, but we can survive lag spikes at lower difficulty. Hope it improves before people like you give up because you add a lot to the game with your builds.

What, me worry?
it may be time to consider that SSG has hit the limit of how much they are willing to spend to fix this problem and what they are capable of doing to support customers.

I'm not throwing shade, I'm stating a belief...SSG made business decision...they aren't working late nights or responding to customers...they've cut everything conceivable to become profitable. they did spend on servers, but it was always a gamble.

The true failure here was allowing too many folks to join Thrane.

This game is cooked if they were capable of fixing it, it would have been done over two months ago. That list of " balance " makes no sense putting in bonuses for a game that doesn't run? How's that help Treasure boost will run out before the lag the xp boost wont matter when you cant finish the quest! Daily Dice 90 percent of the time is just useless garbage.

I 100% agree. It is so frustrating when you want to play, but the game just doens't let you play. I was so looking forward to raiding with old friends that left Khyber and making a ton of new friends. Does SSG realize how frustrating it is to join a group, only to find that most of the players just seem so defeated while talking to them. We all compain about the lag, or try not to say the word, just out of superstition. Just overall very disappointed that they shoehorned an expansion out while the game is unplayable (most of the time). I too am reaching my breaking point of just walking away. sad state of the game for sure, when it should be a huge revitalization!

You’re missing the point. Its compromise. Sure, they are trying to find the problem, in the meantime if they increase the rewards and such it balances it out some of the loss to the players.

The time commitment doing this is Minimal, however it does give something to the player base to even out their experience to some degree.

They currently can't fix it.
They currently don't have an in-depth plan, Nor the tools to isolate and resolve the issue
They currently are struggling to resolve the issue for the player base

So, is it fair that the player base suffers thru it as they have been? The player base has held up their end with subscriptions (for the most part) and continuing to play. Why wouldn't management compensate? It’s the reasonable thing to do.

I mean in the grand scheme of things with 156+ lives to go, does it matter if they turned on extra exp and loot bonus's? The playerbase will continue to stack potions on top of it. So its not a loss of revenue.

I know it has been said many times before and never happened but I do believe these are the last weeks of DDO.
I think they thought to give it a shot (64b) and if it doesn't work they'll pull the plug. I cannot see any other reason giving away well selling stuff for free like bank space, character slots, starter set etc.
That's why they don't really care, they were prepared for this.

The lag has been so bad during peak hours but when there arent peak players the game has been functioning. I'm still confident that it will get resolved eventually. I hope they give us nothing until its fixed. I dont think incentivizing people burning out with bonuses while the game is super laggy is a great idea. We know they are planning a big content coupon code already, when the lag does get resolved, so the people asking for free stuff as a result of the lag, it is coming...

Yep. DDO is in a sad state of affairs. It does make me wonder what, if any future there is for this game considering the amount of time that this has gone on for. There doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency to getting this fixed that I can see (that doesn't mean there isn't, I'm just not feeling/seeing it). It just seems to be business as usual (with the exception that the house is on fire, oh well...)

I have VIP for a couple more months before it runs out. I would like to keep it up, but that will only happen if things change significantly for the better. I want good things for this game and for the peeps making it, but how much should we put up with before we throw in the towel? I'm not there yet, but my motivation to play has taken a serious hit, because DDO isn't fun to play anymore. 🙁

The new servers were supposed to rejuvenate DDO and its player base. Instead it looks like more of a coup de grâce.

Eoin-1

But now I'm supposed to baby sit this stupid heart
I am about to the point of no longer logging in until I see them post the free quest coupon. Which in theory would mean the lag is under control. Not worth the additional grey hairs anymore.

Yeah... good luck with all that. At best you'll get lip-service and more waffling.

For a few days around the start of server merge I was very happy, I had cancelled my two long time VIP subs a few months back but was getting excited about playing on shinny new servers full of LFMs. My transfer went smoothly but the problems started the 3-4 times I logged in after transfer and was unable to even access the airship. Between that experience and reading about the issues still present on the forums, I think I am most likely done for a long time, who knows, Mabar always seems to have a way of sucking me back into the game.

It is a bit odd reading about the very bad lag you guys are having.

I am on Moonsea and sure we have some lag - and bad lag at times - but overall its no where near the worst DDO has experienced. We just did 4 raids on R1 (Threats, Viper, FoM and Dryad) with practically no lag at all and it was enjoyable.

But if the other servers lag so badly the game will sadly die - so I really hope they figure something out so you guys can have fun as well.
