DDO Producer
Here are the release notes for Update 71 Preview, released on Wednesday, November 19th, 2024. These notes are not final, are incomplete, and will be updated over time.
Lamannia opens starting today at 5pm, and the preview continues until 5:00pm Eastern (-4 GMT) on Thursday, November 21st.

Of Special Note:

Quest Pack: Fall of the Night Brigade

A new quest pack is available for this preview. This quest pack is CR 4 Heroic / 35 Legendary.
You can enter the quests by going to the Wheloon Docks via the Gatekeepers Grove, and then speaking with the Wererat NPC Old Tarlow.

Other changes
  • The quest "Memoirs of an Illusory Larcener" has been permanently retired from the game due to irreconcilable performance issues. Unique treasure from the quest will be re-located to a different quest in the near future.
  • Adjustments have been made to main party room of Partycrashes to improve framerate.
  • Fixed a stuck spot in Legendary Chronoscope.
  • Fixed some lamps that were improperly floating in the air in Just Business.
  • Fixed a hole in the staircase of Army of the Endless Night.
  • Adjusted lighting in the Hall of Heroes to be more performant.
  • The Hag in the quest Witch Hunt should now be more responsive to the placement of Banners.
  • Optimized the performance of how certain game text is generated in various parts of the game interface.
  • Renamed a portal in Caught in the Web to be more clear, and updated the mapnote as well, so that it no longer claims to be taking you to "The Underdark".
  • Reduced the difficulty of the traps that appear in the final room of Finding Doris.
  • Massaged a misbehaving staircase in the Marketplace to prevent getting stuck while using a Mount.
  • Fixed a typo in Eye Know Whodunnit.
  • Fixed a bug that was preventing certain NPC rogues from dropping traps, exploding spiders, etc.

It's a shame that Illusory Larcener has to go, as it's a super cool quest, but I can't say I'm surprised. I don't think I've ever had a super clean run through the quest.

I would consider perhaps splitting the loot up into different quests, adding 4 new items to a single quest could really dilute a loot pool.

Excited to see more things being added to the Wheloon area, it's always felt in need of love.

I assume that this is an old release date and that U71 is not going to the live servers tomorrow.

Couldn't the quest be somewhat easily re-done as static "islands" with clickable doors (teleports) connecting them? All the required assets already exist. This seems rather drastic.

Would also like to have this. Not only is it one of the few F2P quests, but also one with a really unique flavor, and as I believe that the overlapping Terrain is at fault (though I rarely had any problems with the quest), remaking would feel much better than dismissing it entirely.

I can do things others can't...
I think the reason why it's getting retired and not retooled, is likely because with the effort and time needed to make that happen, you might as well make a new quest to replace it entirely. Hence, the retirement, given there's performance issues within the quest itself that newer quest designs will try to avoid from.

Im currently doing every single quest on my character and that quest was one of the next ones I was going to tackle. I even have the quest picked up. I tried to enter it and it says the instance has been locked.

Would be nice to run it once before its gone forevers. Ah well.

Memoirs can't just be reworked instead? I don't recall a quest ever being outright removed from DDO before, that's very surprising to read and unfortunate.

One could argue the original Euphonia's Challenge, the Golem Training Rooms, the original Kobold Island, and Postern Gates Wild have been outright removed from DDO, but that is more due to Korthos overtaking the DDO Tutorial and new player experience.

I'm glad Memoirs is getting retired, I've never liked it and always felt it reflected poorly on the sort of quality adventures of which the devs are capable.

May I suggest once again a quest that explores the Feydark a little. A long time ago on the old forums I suggested a quest with a mad or absentminded artist where to get to the final fight we have to solve one of these puzzles:

Except instead of glowing lines we have tiles of a painting... and let's say 3 are missing and must be acquired within the dungeon. We could fight animated object paintings, sculpture golems, paint oozes and various fey creatures. The dungeon could be mostly an internal Feywild architecture with some exploration of external Underdark/Feydark wilderness. Lots of illusions. Maybe a painting that shows up in a few random locations that will teleport the players into an optional (like the secret door in Immortality Lessons) but not timed/disappearing.

I didn't like the quest for how simplistic it was, but I *did* like the way it demonstrated quest environments can be altered dynamically.
As a tech test with a massive amount of testers, it did its job.
As an actual quest... not so much.

Anyone else unhappy that we get quests at level 4 then their legendary version is 35. Are we fighting more legendary rats and dogs?
