U72 Early Look: Dragon Disciple Monk Archetype

Epicsoul

Lava Divers Assistant to the Regional Manager
4, 2 bursts and 2 breaths. The bursts are very short cooldowns for SLA's, also, but I worry that they won't do enough damage to be useful at end game. They shouldn't have any MCL at all, IMO.
This was a question I had. Do they have MCL? I hope not. And they should scale appropriately into epic levels. Otherwise a MCL of 20 just won't get used at cap.

Draconic Burst: You gain five SLAs, each in one of the Draconic elements, which all share a single cooldown. You channel ki to bring forth your Dragon's element in a small burst, hitting all enemies close to you. Deals 1d6+2 [element] damage per caster level (max 10d6+10 at caster level 20). A successful reflex save reduces damage by half, DC 10 + WIS mod + Evocation bonuses (Acid uses Conjuration) + Breath Weapon bonuses. 4 second cooldown, costs 5 ki, must be Centered to use.

1d6+2 caps at 10d6 + 10 at 20?

This makes zero sense
1d6+2 at 20 would be 20d6+40
1d6+2 at 10 would be 10d6+20
1d6+2 at 5 would be 5d6+10

A little from column A, little from column WHY ?

Because it's an untyped buff that will stack with a competence increase.
A competence bonus the tree lacks so will only really be relevant being untyped from using a universal tree or a t5/41 setup (due to being a capstone) as the other trees have their crit threat locked in t5s

Abundant step is literally the main reason why I play monk.
Can you please add in a feat or some AP keystone to put the cooldown to 3 secs? The +20% movement speed for 6 secs is a pretty annoying waste, literally when you enter lvl 20 you can get perma +15% from that flower epic stance.
I kinda doubt one would run GMOF mantle on DD

What spell levels are the abilities going to be treated as? Describing them as like vial smash makes me worry they will use its spell level and therefore not affect liches or anything else with mantle of invulnerability which is more serious for a dragon disciple since they apparently won't have higher level spells to use instead.

And the tree really needs both a competence threat range and multiplier both.

Also, the tree could be a good place thematically to place the curse of the void finisher that charms target and maybe add a bit more variety to the SLAs.

1.I want to know what pastelife of Dragon Subject is
2.I feel add melee damage to those SLA enhancements better, half melee half magic or choose the highest one as usual, could make more builds

Been a while since I did alchemist, but isn't vial smash aoe diameter kinda small?

This reads as being much weaker than an EK, who get plenty of direct damage spells but almost none are worth casting in epics/legendaries except the level 9s. The dice on these SLAs seem way too low to be viable past heroics. If they're going to be this weak, the DCs should just be removed entirely, and save us from that dimension of tetris.

I suspect the issue is the Devs are wrote themsleves into a corner here.

It's clear that some stuff really requires a LOT more work to really make it right rather than use the approach they're going with right now. But that takes time (and work). And DD won't release in time with the freebie release if they take that approach. So we are getting this approach instead but it guts the flavour of what the Monk is in DDO.

I'd rather the Devs let players pick up the freebie, but not release the Archetype and the Monk update until the put the time to get all of the update right.

Lets look at the dragon discipline prestige from 3.5 . the cool part of it is , you get to gradually transform to become more dragon-like as you level up . you gain claw and bite attacks as natraul weapons . Give DD a cool form changing stance . that gives the appearance of claws and wings . maybe a tail . it can appear similar to tensers transformation but a little different . the claw slashing thing from AotS was kinda cool , just not done right . please consider my suggestion Devs if you are reading

With the +30 mrr cap here, I think it's safe to say everyone realizes that a 50 mrr cap is just too low and serves little purpose other than gating "this character/class can't come to this quest/raid", and it would make more sense to just raise that cap globally for everyone, and start removing sources of mrr cap from the game to simplify a problem that has gotten way too complex.

Unfortunately, they're just kicking the can down the road from what I can see. Some stuff needs work now (like the 64bit server), kicking it down the road would not have helped. Here, they really need to put the effort in and change things (not just for the Monk), but given they have limited time, they are also limited in only being able to kick the can down further and hoping they get back around to it.

So it's an endless cycle where they just need to bite the bullet and take it on in one massive go, rather than just keep holding off or only doing the minimum/easy road to get things done. But they always end up choosing to kick the can down the road instead.

Core 18: Way of the Mighty Dragon III: Your Way of the Mighty Dragon now includes +3 Critical Confirmation and Critical Damage and +3 Imbue Dice. +5 Maximum Caster Level with Lesser Draconic Burst.

Core 20: Draconic Apotheosis: Active: For 20 seconds, you take 50% less damage from Fire, Cold, Electric, Acid, and Poison, gain +2 to all Ability Scores, gain immunity to Sleep and Paralysis, +1 Critical Threat Range with all weapons, +5% Spell Critical Damage, and Acolyte's Breath and Devastation both deal double damage. Cost: 100 Ki. 2 minute cooldown. Passive: +2 Wisdom, +2 Dexterity, +12 Melee Power, and +12 Universal Spell Power. +5 Maximum Caster Level with Lesser Draconic Burst.
Why do Cores 5 and 6 only increase MCL on Lesser Draconic Burst, and why only to an MCL of 15?
Lesser Draconic Burst: You gain five SLAs, each in one of the Draconic elements (Fire, Cold, Electric, Acid, and Poison), which all share a single cooldown. You channel ki to bring forth your Dragon's element in a small burst, hitting all enemies very close to you. Deals 1d6+1 [element] damage per caster level (max 5d6+5 at caster level 5). A successful reflex save reduces damage by half, DC 10 + WIS mod + Evocation bonuses (Acid uses Conjuration) + Breath Weapon bonuses. 4 second cooldown, costs 5 ki, must be Centered to use.
With Core 6 and MCL 15, this does more damage at 20 than Draconic Burst (15d6+15)?
Draconic Burst: You gain five SLAs, each in one of the Draconic elements, which all share a single cooldown. You channel ki to bring forth your Dragon's element in a small burst, hitting all enemies close to you. Deals 1d6+2 [element] damage per caster level (max 10d6+10 at caster level 20). A successful reflex save reduces damage by half, DC 10 + WIS mod + Evocation bonuses (Acid uses Conjuration) + Breath Weapon bonuses. 4 second cooldown, costs 5 ki, must be Centered to use.
Math is wrong or base damage is wrong (1d6+2/caster level is either 10d6+20 capped at 10, or 20d6+40 capped at 20, never 10d6+10)

It's a bit weird to me that the Dragon Disciple tree only gets 4 bonus imbue dice while trying to be a spellpower imbue melee build, your damage is going to be so much more situated in the imbue damage.
Henshin mystic gets 6 imbue dice from cores, Sacred fist gets 7 from the tree overall +3 from sacred flame empowerment, eldritch knights get a consistent 11 and +4 during Eldritch Blade, VKFs get 11 (13 if counting GEW).
4 for this kind of enhancement tree is weirdly underwhelming.
(thinking on it, Warpriest gets 6, DA/warpriest gets 9 pretty comfortably but can go for more.)

Correction: Missed 2 dice because I searched 'Imbue Dice' and missed the '+2 Imbue Die'
However, 6 dice still feels low for this archetype in my opinion, I wouldn't suggest going as high as an EK or VKF but there should be something to give more imbue dice, a counterpart to sacred flame empowerment would fit well.
Overall the dice may be a bit delayed and make leveling this archetype feel somewhat poor as a melee if you're going for a spellpower focus.

It also feels weird for the capstone to lack imbue dice, I would suggest spreading the imbue dice from the level 18 core to cores 6, 12 and 18 and then having an additional 2 dice passively in the capstone.

I like the direction. We'll see how it plays out in reality. Always had a love hate relationship with monk. One of my favorite classes but with some real headaches also. A lot of those headaches look to be resolved! So... How about we lift the alignment requirements

Another question because I can't keep track of all the synonyms for fear used in the game, does the effect Afraid, seen in draconic devastation mean it will cause enemies to run away in fear, something inconvenient for a melee character, or is it a cower in place effect?

Draconic Devastation: You gain five SLAs, each in one of the Draconic elements, which all share a single cooldown. Active Breath Attack SLA: Cone that deals 1d6+6 [element] damage per caster level (reflex save for half). Affected enemies who are Shaken become Afraid and have their movement speed reduced by 90% for 6 seconds. Counts as Evocation spell except Acid is Conjuration; gets full Metamagic feats, No SR, DC 10 + WIS mod + Evocation bonuses (Acid uses Conjuration) + Breath Weapon bonuses. Scales with 100% of spell power. Activation Cost: 15 ki, must be Centered. Cooldown: 25 seconds.
