Howdy all! With Update 82, we're changing how Monster DR functions. Rather than each monster having its own DR value, failing to break DR will now reduce your weapon damage by 50%. This means that if you're fighting a monster that used to have DR 10/good, and you don't have a Good aligned weapon, rather than subtracting 10 damage from your weapon attack, your attack will now do 50% less damage.

Player DR is unchanged and will function how it does currently.

Note: This change has horribly broken the raid The Hound of Xoriat as Xyzzy uses DR to prevent player-sourced damage - this will be fixed for an upcoming preview!

So, about jewelers' toolkits and sentient weapons, time to make these vastly more accessable? Would be nice for ways to quick swap for DR breaking purposes without having to lose this stuff. Toolkits could be used to swap between augments for alignment DR's. While having to swap entire weapons for physical DR's/material type.

Monster DR has been poorly maintained for quite some time, nearly meaningless, so it is nice to see it have relevance again.

I am curious what this means for things possessing DR/-, which can not be bypassed.

its nice on some things- like if something has 3000dr/good thats a damage improvement no?

This is both horrible and somewhat useful. The trade off here is bad in other words. If my tank doing 500 points of damage a hit runs into a DR Beyesk 450, I am doing 50 points to it. With this change, I am doing 250. i.e. somewhat useful.

If my mega damage melee doing 5K on a hit against the same creature, instead of doing 4550 damage, he is doing 2500 damage. i.e. Horrible. Not to mention the big crit special hits like Hunt's End. Instead of hitting for 60K, I will do 30K???

This will affect other things than metaline and aligned DRs. Think Bludgeoning, Slashing and Piercing DRs. Are you expecting melees now to build 3 different Sentient weapons to adjust for this DR change? What about ranged who do not have an option to change damage type. Are ranged just expected to suck it up and accept that they will do half damage to every skeleton and zombie?

No offence, but this idea needs to be kicked to the curb and left there.

ranged can change. you can get rl quiver for blud and certain weapons have different things on them to change their damage type

Ok it's kinda bad when you think about metal/alignment DRs, because we just can't slot everything on one weapon with sentience.

But adding slash/blunt/pierce DR on top of that is going to kill entire weapon types.

This clearly hasn't been thought through, no one asked for it, take it to the curb.

Implementing this change without a broad sweeping change to available sources of DR that do not require carrying 17 weapons, getting duplicate copies of every filigree in the game for said weapons and not to mention difficult to obtain DR breaks like for ranged attackers vs skeletons etc.

This really seems to create a LOT of problems as far as maintaining any level of DPS as a DPS character anywhere that there is DR that you have no simple way to obtain via enhancements or augments or temp buffs from scrolls or potions or something sensible that is easily stocked up on to avoid carrying a literal arsenal of weapons.

I really hope we can look hard at this and either rework it or bring some sensible items into the game along with it to mitigate some really weird situations arising.

I forgot about the quiver. But yes, there are a couple of things that add Blunted Ammo. But besides the quiver, they are weapon specific, which means loosing all your filigrees just to do full damage to a mob.

I don't think there is a slashing option for ranged.

While I do like the idea of bringing some relevance back to DR breaking, I think this is too heavy-handed. There are many areas of the game that end up locking us into one weapon type and pretty much one weapon overall. Improved critical feats, favored weapon feats, enhancements, Epic destiny tier 5 multiplier bonus on 19-20 rolls, and of course Sentient Weapons.

In my opinion, the satisfaction of coming prepared with the right weapon to bypass DR and do more damage is not nearly enough to outweigh the loss of satisfaction from making so many of the feats, enhancements, and sentient bonuses that I've built into my character temporarily worthless.

I'd recommend dropping the percentage down to something like 20%. Do we really want raids to take twice as long without the right DR breakers?
