Ukraine payment source restricted from making purchases

I directed him to the ddo discord, maybe he received help there?
SSG always reply with 'We don't have control over the payment system. Can't help. Sorry, bye.'

Btw I found a thread from May 9th 2023 describing the same issue. So over 2 years ago this was an issue and nothing has been done.
It started in 2014, you can count the years if you want to.

Replaced Israel with <a different country currently involved in war or warlike activities>, hope the trolls are happy now.

I hope this will get sorted, for both countries.

For sure. It's much better when you want to pretend that you did not say something but still say it... only not in so much words ;)

Seriously tho it's a niche problem and since SSG does not deal with many bigger issues that limit their potential customers it's not surprising that they are not solving this one. Disappointing but not unexpected.

Ukrainian player here. I’ve received this response from Technical Support.

Two additional points worth mentioning:
– I was able to purchase expansions without any issues prior to 2022 (I took a long break and returned in 2026).
– I was able to purchase DDO Points in 2026 from the in-game store using PayPal, but I am still unable to purchase expansions.

It's not a mystery. Ukraine credit card fraud surged in 2023-2024 and many online retailers stopped CC processing from that region. PayPal is treated differently.

I guess some missed it appear to be a problem in Russia and Ukraine. I suspect as Ying mentioned it is a fraud problem.

That might be the case. However, PayPal is my only available option, and while it works fine in the in-game store (which I’m very glad to have), the same PayPal option in the web store does not.

Perhaps @Celestrata Bloodsong can provide insight why the marketplace and store are treated differently for PayPal.

I hope they won’t ban the in-game shop for my location.😿

I remember playing this game back in 2016 and not being able to purchase anything on great sales, relying only on in-game currency earned from favor — it was a really miserable experience. You basically had to TR just to be able to farm favor again.

Similar problem with Slovakia. All the prices are much higher here, since VAT is effectively applied twice. All prices are shown in dollars instead of euros, and are much higher than they should be according to reports from other EU players. For instance, a monthly VIP for me costs around €17, unless I pay it through Steam (in which case it costs about €13,80 after $-€ conversion). There is surely something wrong with the payment system. Not sure how is this not a priority since many players can't pay directly to SSG and/or are forced to use a 3rd party provider like Steam, which -- as far as I know -- takes about 30% of every transaction.

While what you mention is an issue, it’s a bit different in my case, since payment systems at least work in your country. At the moment, I’m unable to buy VIP at all or any expansions. No Ultimate Bundles during Black Friday sales with 80% discounts, they are simply not available to me. 😿

In the in-game shop, I also have double currency conversion: UAH → EUR and EUR → USD. I don’t think this has anything to do with SSG, though — I doubt they have any control over it.

SSG doesn't control any of the payment stuff directly. All titles under the Daybreak umbrella use the same payment processing to get better fee rates which vary from 2.5-4% per transaction. You'll find similar forum threads for LOTRO, EQ 1+2, Planetside, etc.

My somewhat educated guess - someone at SSG and/or Xosilla is scared of getting sanctioned over activities in Ukraine/Russia region (other, though not really relevant to DDO, US issued sanctions apply). Protecting their potential losses (while cutting, not so big part of their revenue). Being overly protective of themselves is what i suspect, and to lazy (under staffed) to figure it out.

What is more annoying (but well, expected) is their inconsistency at who is blocked and who is not. There may be even difference at depending on when account was created and/if payment methods was previously used. I suspect number of accounts were flagged for restrictions, without possibility to change their region or payment method or option to lift that flag. Fraud protection that flags people on who-know-how-it-works basis.

From similar posts over years - no good solutions or high hopes. Sorry folks who cant fully enjoy game they like. While it is possible to earn DDO points (and maybe buy in game), you still 6-12 month behind everyone running newer expansions. Brace yourself, and have fun with what you have.

It actually is.

Which is strange.

AFAIK, they stopped accepting payments from Ukraine back in 2014 (somewhere between August-October, I don't remember the exact month) when they did some changes to DDO Store. How can you pay "until 2022" if they haven't accepted payments ?

I received a very nice and informative response from DDO support. This might be useful for someone who runs into the same issue, as it explains why using a VPN or other ways of “changing your location” won’t help.

  • I was able to buy DDO Points back in 2013 (to upgrade my account from F2P to Premium). At that time, I didn’t buy any expansions.
  • In 2016, when I started playing again, I was no longer able to purchase DDO Points. I’m not sure about expansions back then — I didn’t try (I think only MoTU and Shadofell were available).
  • Somewhere around 2020, I was able to purchase a few expansions on sale — I think it was Ravenloft and/or Sharn. I also remember that during COVID, Sharn was given free access, and after that free access ended, I bought the expansion. I’m also pretty sure I bought MoTU and Shadowfell on sale at some point, possibly even before Sharn and RL, since I remember getting access to them before I had Ravenloft or Sharn gear, running around Forgotten Realms in RNG items. Bet I still wasn’t able to buy DDO Points, though. I remember being envious of the triple DDO Points discount 😁
Most of the time I spent in this game was between 2019 and 2022; other periods were pretty short.
