I spent about 45 minutes running around epic wilderness yesterday, and my first reaction is that it's big, beautiful, empty, and boring. I went in the entrance by the boat, took a left and roughly followed the edge of the map (although I was far enough away from the edge that I should've seen or triggered mobs anywhere along there), eventually making it to the cemetery and then into some of the ruins.
I came across very few monsters and they were in groups no larger than 3. I was solo, so the group size doesn't concern me, although I hope it scales with party size, similar to IoD. The problem was that they were really sparse, far apart, and there was little variety in what popped up. I'd like to see a lot more density and variety. I did run across a few mob portals, but they were difficult to see and disappeared after the initial set of mobs was killed. I'd like to see a few waves come out, along with variety in what monsters spawned each wave or by portal -- that'd make it more interesting.
In my time running around, I came across one scroll and two quests (one in the cemetery and one in the ruins). I'll have to explore again to find other quests, but the fact that I found nothing of interest in the area I ran through, until I got to the cemetery means there is NO reason for me to ever go through that area again once the expansion goes live, and that makes me sad. Sure, I might run through it for slayers, assuming mob density increases, but with no rares or scrolls (at least not that I encountered), there's little reason for me to bother. I'd love to have some reason to go to the area, even for slayers. Maybe put some rares there, or have explorer points. Another thought is to make the monster portals more worthwhile, maybe by having them drop chests, presumably with a different loot table than rares, but with something worth farming. It would be great if this whole wilderness was a great place to do slayers. That'll require more mob density, scaling of mob group size by party size, and enough rares and explorer points to keep it interesting.
I'll try to get back into the wilderness to see where the quest entrances and rares are tonight. My hope is that it doesn't require endless running to get to them all, because that would not be fun and will keep people from wanting to buy the expansion for the quests.
