Update 72: The Unbalanced Monk

That's an intriguing idea to use Colour Spray plus helpless damage.
DDO doesn't support using CS on a monk -- lacking gear, enhancements and feat slots.

I wouldn't ever take Shadar-kai b/c of Displacement. You can craft Displacement clickies if you really want them, but they are diminished the higher the reaper you do.

Shadar-Kai is all about the chain. I've used it on many builds. I wouldn't give up 4 WIS and 4 hands to LR+1 into it on a monk since monk already has a litany of CC options.

Monk didn't get nerfed; but the playstyle got altered and ranged/ninja spy is absolutely foul.
Fowl Ninjas are clearly melee

As you mentioned, monk has a litany of CC and this is regardless if you take a single target focused handwraps build or AOE melee quarterstaff build. The issue for me is not CC, but rather that I want a monk handwraps build because it has high DPS that is capable of dealing some AOE damage when you get surrounded by mobs.

I know at end game that it is not an issue because there are a number of AOE melee options in the Epic Destiny trees. But I don't hang out at end game and spend 99% of my time leveling and a large chunk of that time in heroics where you have very limited options to handle those melee situations where you are surrounded using a single target build.

Picking up WWA is a no brainer. And I'm thinking whether also picking up Spring Attack as well as Incinerating Wave (Core 4) from HM tree would be enough to mitigate this problem and make it viable in heroics playing a handwraps build.

On another note, I read up on your U66 Monk 20 build which I found helpful. I particularly like how you take epic strikes in both Grandmaster of Flowers and FotW. The first is Drifting Lotus for trash mobs and then Adrenaline for bosses.

I just started a ninja and a few things realy bothers me about ninja spy.
the poison wont get much use. difficult to stack on anything before it dies while leveling and immunity everywhere.
the cost of enhancements add up so quickly.
the assasination theme doesnt do much but flash bang if you are light or one t5 attack that doesnt assasinate. if dark the poison exploit might get some use on some none immune boss since you use the +2 crit multi attack anyways but it wont be on full power.
core 1 and 3 does nothing for a melee except making dex to damage possible.
core 12 is probably not going to be used by me. to bad they didnt change it to removing poison immunity.
core 6 is a nice flavor that I like but all in all it isnt untill lvl 18 the cores will do much.

this means that in order for me to level a ninja I am better leveling up in another tree. I am using falconry and working myself up in feydark now.
I would probably be better off grabbing imbues from another tree but I wanted the assasinate theme going.

I might have to multiclass in to alchemist in order to use the poison my next life. I´ve done it before but losing core 20 it is better to go alchemist for imbues and the alchemist poison imbue is better anyways. damn it.

I am a bit frustrated

how do I make a good ninja using ninjaspy now?

You don't, that's the problem. The tree is not good.

I know shuricannons are good damage endgame. I´ve played a lot of shuricannons. it´s just the melee ninja I want.

the most fun playstile I´ve played that is ninjaish is an alchemist vistani deep gnome with greater colorspray from racial. smoke bomb and invisibility on tumble. i took 3 monk levels for feats and harper for trance.

I guess I am attempting something similar except I know it wont be as good haha

The only time ranged has ever been "good damage" is when Inquis was overperforming 5 years ago, and now. Ranged is a necessary evil for high reaper raid boss encounters, because reaper raids are not balanced. Melee (non THF) is the gold standard for doing "good damage".

nah dw peeps see 20k fronts and dont remember that their Melee counterpart deals 10k fronts but 4 times in the same time :d
it should be that way and xbow needs to get slapped back into being a bit worse than Melees its absolutely ludicrous how Inquis and repeater rip thru everything while Shuri is in a balanced spot (Maybe a teeny tiny buff) and Bow needs some desperate love

bow has needed help forever, even after the revamp in u48 (thrower was still better at that time lmao)

I'd prefer a Shintao if charging into another plane, especially Shavarath.

They'd be very surprised once they realize that Banishing and other extraplanar effects dont work on their target's home plane...lol

Then they'd be even more surprised when *they* got banished instead :D

reaper raids are not balanced

TBH they dont have to be, and really shouldn't be. If reaper is too tough...well then good, the challenge and the glory will be figuring out how to beat it anyway

Dismissing Strike was a niche ability, worked in some places and not in others. I rarely ever used it, but was surprised (with you) when it worked.

I am a firm believer that reaper mode should be made more difficult. I think in this state it's unhealthy for the game for both unbalancing of playstyles & the difficulties presented in the game. It's also very easy to level in right now where multiple people have a bunch of reaper points that it's easier than elite. I don't think that kind of balance should exist in a video game.

Besides that, the monk changes did way to much that i'm still left uncomfortable with all the extra buttons they added.

As a melee, you don't. At all.
The finishers of the Ninja Spy were all debuffing or damaging. They're all gone.
Look at my old guide and contrast it to the current. You can't even neg-level, paralyze, blind, or use ki for pretty much anything.

Ninja Spy in ranged mode as a starthrower has not changed for the most part. There's a new T5 Improved Archer's Focus, but you'd have to trade off T5 options on other better trees.
