Vanishing shots - I hate dry firing.

  • The firing arc tolerance for general missile weapons (bows, etc.) has been upped from 45 degrees to 60 degrees. This should help avoid dry fires when the player is strafing circling a monster up close with a missile weapon.
Even with this recent change with u59, I still get lots of dry fires on both my repeater arti (on live) and the my inquisitive (on HC). I don't have a bow/thrower at the moment to know how bad they are; but on xbows it's fairly painful at times when the shots vanish into the void. I'm hoping *fingers crossed* that there's more work on this issue coming.

I can do things others can't...
If I'm not mistaken, the issue with the Repeaters and Inquisitive dry firing was a different issue to the issue relating to the firing arc, as it was more tied to the the animation than the point where it fires from and at what angle if I remember right.

Although in either case, I haven't heard or read about the Devs making a specific look into this, but I have been semi-away for the last two weeks odd lately so not kept up up to speed on everything the Devs have planned/announced at this time.

I get this a lot too, and have noticed it on great xbows as well. It seems to happen the most when both the target and I are moving. Like the game lost track of the actual position of the shooter and/or target.

I assumed it wasn't specificly related to a lot of issues we see. I just wanted a thread on the new forums about the problem and to point out that it's still a problem despite the recent work.

I’ve tried using throwing knives at the gate targets in Bargain of Blood recently.

Nothing but air.

Are you centering the reticle on the levers and then releasing your throw?

This is a common error that people make, not understanding the physics of DDO. When you are firing at an object you want to place the reticle over it and then release.

LOL!

I’ve played the game long enough to understand how to fire thrown weapons at targets. It’s definitely not the reticle.

It’s simply dry firing, and only been doing so recently.

I made a post about Bow dry fires recently, it's easy to replicate the issue.

I have noticed that there's is a significant discrepancy (about 6 shots per minute) between how many times my Lv32 Elf 20-Ranger fires her bow (animation wise) and how many arrows land in a minute. Unsure if this existed prior to U59 (there's always been some ranged-attack-desync going on) and I only just noticed because of multiple threads discussing U59, or if it is actually a new thing. But there's definitely shots gone missing. I'm counting about 82~ animations per minute with only 76~ hits showing up.

What, me worry?
just switched my main from melee to ranged, and it's a bit harder to tell dry fire from lag on ranged for sure...but, the times when it gets real obvious that it's dry firing on the bow is when i'm tabbed onto a monster and fire a few shots that should have killed the monster and hp doesn't drop until the melee folks arrive or I reposition to a better angle...me and another archer were playing like melees in some rooms...i guess, it's just part of the game....seems like if you want less dry fire your options are gnome/halfing and/or get in melee range.

I been using an Arti repeater build in HC. Almost anytime I 'dry fire' is when I am clicking attack just as the target gets selected with auto aim. If I allow a split second to register the target, then my shots always connect. It is more noticeable when shooting breakables and your previous target is destroyed. If you pay very close attention> the bow is firing a split second before the next target registers on the crosshair. Those are the times you think you dry fired....but, in reality, you are shooting before the next target is selected.

Yea once in a blue moon I get nothing landing on a registered target...but thats pretty rare. That may happen more in groups ? hard to tell since I solo 80% of the time. Though, those could be the fresh targets highlighting just after you already fired.
