weapons for sorcerer

Good morning. I'm on a completionist path, trying a sorcerer for the first time, using this Strimtom guide https://forums-old.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/537008-A-Simple-Starter-Fire-Sorcerer-Build-for-U57, leveling to 20, then moving on to the next class.

I'm wondering what sort of weapons I should be carrying, ie, shield and sickle? Orbs? What the heck is an orb anyway? It is simply something you carry to boost spellcasting power? Do I even need a weapon?

I've been mostly meleeing and need some guidance into transitioning into a spellcaster. I've eased myself in with Cleric, Bard, and Ranger, and I'm ready to go all-in with some good AOE damage. I'm tired of picking off mobs one at a time. The new Ranger AOE damage sucks.

P.S. I only solo so far at elite and sometimes hard on harder quests because most groups reaper these days, and I'm not there yet.

Thanks in advance.

If you hurry you can get the forum posts from the anniversary party. (Acid/Cold/Electric/Fire/Negative are available). Each has +SP/+Crit%/+Ins. DC (Evocation for all but Neg (+Necro DC))/and +Wizardry.

Forum posts from the anniversary party? Please explain.

On another note, I read that it doesn't matter what you carry, even if you're not proficient with the weapon. All that matters is the spell buff enhancement it has.

For a fire sorcerer, you want to stack a couple of things:

Fire Spellpower
Fire Critical Spell Chance
Universal Spellpower

ML2: Borderlands: Crafted combustion scepter (offhand)
ML5: Feywild: Ring of Summer, and The Queen's Scepter for Spellcraft (mainhand).
ML7: Dread: Powder-packed Barrel offhand (offhand). Neck: Pendant of the Earth for Insightful Combustion.
ML10: Ravenloft: Barovian Sceptre for Spellcraft (mainhand).
ML14: House J: Wild Flame (offhand)

Until March 19 there is the game's anniversary quest, which gives partyfavors that can be exchanged for various items, including some spellpower/critical scepters called "forum posts." You have them every 5 levels, of all elements (including sound, force, negative...)

For example: https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Clamorous_Forum_Post

It's an option, but there are others.

and yes, you don't need to be proficient with the weapon, the penalty for non-proficiency is only to hit, so it doesn't affect spellcasting. In fact the devs have a preference for making weapons for pale masters in sickles, even at the raid loot level, and the wizard is not proficient with sickles.

Where can I find these quests?

You can access it (it's just one quest) in front of phiarlan chapterhouse (obviously in phiarlan house) or through the hall of heroes.

To get the maximum number of party favors you need to play the challenge 5 levels above your own (e.g., if you are level 20, play it at least 25).

The difficulty is not high. In general I find the challenge easier in epic levels than in heroic ones.

The Anniversary party (in house P). Run it and get party favors which can be traded for items: See Here
