What could be done to make "Past Lives" more interesting?

Past lives have become a major source of lag as per Severlin. Best is to remove ALL past lives rewards and just keep the completionists (heroic +2 and racial +2 to all stats) rewards.
Would be better to fix the issue as this is a long standing feature of the game. Otherwise, removing it would be tantamount to penalizing those who earned those PL.

Maybe an option to spend past lives for some other bonus. Just as an example trade a fighter, cleric, and paladin past life for a permanent feat that lets you heal 1 point in a small AoE on a melee attack. Sort of like a combo past life feat with a limit to how many you can have active at once, like heroic versions of epic past life feats.

Yes, but for MMO players that does not matter.

If you have an MMO itch to scratch only an MMO will do it. Right now the gaming market as it applies to continuous games with more than a few players participating is defined by a small handful of aging titles.

The overall multi-player market is defined by PvP battle royale games like Fortnight and PUBG.

There really isn't much out there for MMO players, particularly if you don't like the survival-based games.
No, precisely those players are the ones who have invested a massive amount of time and often a lot of money in those PLs. I can tell you that if devs remove them, DDO will not survive.

The motivation of all those people who have invested a lot of time and money in PLs was to get those PLs. Most players wouldn't forgive something like that.

I don't think they need to do anything to nerf past lives.

I think they need to create an alternative for new players or they won't keep more than a few of them once they've figured the deal out.

We've seen this in peoples' bios to some extent for ages.
One thing that would help is more space for bios. I am on my 56th time through the game (46 heroic/racial lives and 10 iconic) and I have them all listed in order showing the class and race I played. But I am out of space and there is a lot more to go. At least double the space for bios and more would be better.

But of course we'll get Legendary enhancements plus past lives added in now.
I certainly hope so.

How did we get so off topic? The first commenter made a silly post about removing past lives, which has nothing to do with the original post or the topic of the thread. I ignored it as an unhelpful, off-topic comment only to discover it permanently derailed the conversation. This thread is not about removing past lives. Let's come up with good suggestions for how the past life system can be improved in the way the original poster intended.

I think it makes sense that the more calculations needed, the more lag is induced. I don't doubt what you are saying.

If SSG doesn't stress the need for past lives, how does the hampster keep rolling and who will buy ottos boxes?

I don't believe anything could be done to make past lives more interesting. Nor do I think anything should be done to make past lives more interesting.

I think DDO is drowning in a sea of past mistakes at this point that prevent it from having any appeal to people not already heavily invested in the game.

Adding more water to that sea isn't going to float anything.

I have heard this argument in the past. If true, it simply points to ignorance in programming techniques... quite possibly brought about only having experience programming modern systems with seemingly unlimited processing power. Benefits from past lives are not variables, but are statics. They only change upon reincarnation with a new past life. In fact, reaper points, some feats & enhancements are also statics rather than variables. Yes, they can be changed within a life, but are fixed after a single calculation and cannot be adjusted inside a private instance. Hopefully the developers are aware of this and these numbers are not all being calculated dynamically every single time they are needed... because that just might cause lag.

We don't know what their DB provisioning model is. We also do not know what side of the multi-core vs single core paradigm they chose.

Given that I played their first product Asheron's Call and that it served as a model if not a wholesale source for much of the DDO code I have no problem believing that we're looking at a late 90's development project that has somehow survived for 25 years now. Nobody was looking at multi-core processing for video games in the late 90's. Everybody was betting that single core processors would just keep doubling in power every couple of years as they had done since the early 80's.

Given that this was a game studio the odds they were taking risks in development is basically zero. Well, maybe just astronomically low.

More iconic classes would mean more ways for people to get 2 for 1 lives. For example any of the iconic lives when completed and an Iconic heart is applied you get 2 past life feats. One being the base class of the build and the second the iconic past life. Iconic lives are more entertaining as it brings you into raiding and gathering powerful resources for end game crafting and upgrading. Having an iconic for every class means just doing iconic 15-30 will grant progress towards heroic completionist and any bonuses that iconic tring provides. Just make sure to have the primary class of the build with the majority of levels.

I am still wondering if you perform an iconic build and then lesser reincarnate (may have to bypass the reincarnation timer or wait it out) at level one to change its base class to an arch type if you would get the arch type class when you iconic tr. A costly risk that someone may have tried in the past.

For iconic toons you can't do that at level one because you can't reincarnate while you have levels to train up (outside HC of course). Once you've leveled up your iconic toon to 15 you can switch to an archetype with a lesser reincarnation at any time. It will change all levels you've taken with the base class to the archetype levels.

but does that include when you iconic tr do you get the arch type as well as the iconic past lives?

Why not? A character either has it or does not have it. What's the big deal?
Databases. Everything is stored in databases and everything has to be called from a database each time it needs to be loaded into the game. The problem is the backend. Traditional database requests are processed with transactions. Transactions lock the database until they complete to prevent corruption of data and other issues. Now do this every time characters log in or enter a dungeon or switch instances in stormreach. If your backend performance is suffering then the entire game suffers with various issues. Anyone who was around for the launch of WoW in Nov 2004 experienced this problem firsthand.
