As of the recent patch that included changes to hires, you made them (mostly) unusable. They are slower than they were prior to the update and end up standing in place even though you are ahead of them fighting a group of monsters. They don't seem to want to get involved and just stand back (yes, make hire active is clicked). Eventually they will zone to you provided there are no monsters and you are far enough away from them. The best method is see is to just move through the dungeon until you encounter a fight, then call them to you if you need/want their help. I've said this before but a pulldown or selection section to choose the distance a hire stays from you. for instance...select one: 5ft, 15ft or 30ft back from you.
Please go back and look at the changes you made to hirelings and bring them back into useful service!

In recent times they slowed down the speed of the hirelings so that they dont keep up to you if you are moving at full speed, now with recent update when they fall too far behind the lag starts to lock up as obviously they can no longer keep up with the pathing, our groups hit the come to button until the cooldown spins as this will help somewhat when the hires get back to you. It is now a constant job keeping your hires close to you.

SSG caused this by slowing the speed of the hires, simply reverting the speed of the hires would help in addressing part of this issue. Please note melee hires are worse for locking things up, although healing hires may be bad too but never get used by our groups.

Looks like the same pathing errors that are affecting some mobs, which have gotten a bit worse lately too.

Also targeting errors whereby the unhittable is getting targeted, which is also affecting ranged toons.

No offense, but if we use hirelings and rely on them, expect to go slow and wait patiently for hotbar reset timers. Grab a bard hire with Haste , if you dont cast it ;)

its cool, many of us learned DDO with our hires close by, and maybe a goldseal or two.

thank Ullr I am past relying on hires.... Though, I still use 'em for free heals n' maybe a rez if caught off guard. Fre death wards and even some good aoe attacks. Hires still a good tool, just sometimes the handle breaks :)

We must have different definitions of "rely on them" or you're not summoning any of the good ones because it should just be summon and ignore.

bad news, this is intentional behavior, for now.

that is, DDO is having trouble keeping the post 69 release stable (what players know as lag), to try and keep lag down they are punching holes in everything that spins up the processor or leaks memory. it's not a bad decision, as it's a trade-off, you can have freezing hirelings/mobs or freezing everything.

on the last patch where they added gold rolls, they did this b/c the knew they had a significant issue(s) and it would take time to resolve. true 64-bit server is exposing some flaws, but their attempts to fix the flaws are not going as hoped. I believe the issues they are working on as revealed by 64-bit were known issues when it was originally released & someone made a trade-off decision back then. Well, current devs see the issue and are taking the other side of the trade, but are now discovering why the old devs made the decisions they did.

anyway, take hope in the idea that gold rolls are only a month. my hope is they have given themselves that month to either fix the issue they recently created or roll it back. the longer this issue lasts the more likely they will be to fix MD rare loot to get players back, so there is some silver lining here.

all thoughts expressed above are pure conjecture...but I have been building/designing computers/networks for over 30 years.

not really in r1-r4.
... usually players solo r1, but still even on lowly r1 hires should be on some sort of a leash usually or they die way to often

*unless you're some kind of nuker... then the hire is there just to keep you company !

a good melee can leave the hire a room back...they are always dead the 1 time you actually need them if they are allowed to just run free

The hirelings IN the game have the same problem, too. 😁

This is something new though, not just the good 'ol idiot AI that is the norm in DDO. I've had whole groups of NPC's stand around like they were stuck, and the only way to get them active was to call them to my location (which mostly snapped them out of it a bit...)

some say it basically in their description.. you want ones with very positive comments there. So-So = Dead Fast

As someone who still uses a full group of perma hires to solo r10s at endgame, I can atest they have been less responsive lately. I don't have reason to think it's something they did specifically to hires, tough - it seems more a consequence of the overall state of lag and pathfinding changes, as mobs seem to often have the same issue and it also varies from quest to quest. In some quests they're fine, and in others they're pretty bad, and it's usually the ones with more overall lag otherwise as well.

Also, that may not have affected me as much because I already never did wait for hires to catch up and always teleported them to me at the beginning of every fight while being invisible myself, so they can grab the mobs' aggro first. They often still do take a few seconds to get going even after that some times - but as I also start every fight with a couple of CC layers it doesn't affect me much - by the time the mobs are back into play the hires usually have started to work as well.

I can't be sure, but I assume the OP uses multiple perma hires as well as he seemed to talk about them in the plural - if that's the case, one hint I can give, if one doesn't know, is that "crtl" is your friend - if you click any command on any hireling bar while pressing "crtl" it will broadcast to all hires at once. That makes it easier to command them on the fly - so at least you don't have to wait for them all to catch up while their AIs get going, just hit "crtl + port button" and they'll all jump to you. I recommend people do that at the start of every fight they want the hires to be involved in. It's still a pain while the overall lag issue doesn't get fixed, but waiting for a couple of secs beats never having them even get to the fight at all.

Any time a hireling receives a mobility debuff thy run back to the PC who summoned them. Any time any of the dragons does its wing slam attack and the effect goes on them they run right back until I push the attack button again. Its like I have to constantly remind them to attack the same target I just told them to attack ~10 seconds ago.

I noticed how bad the hirelings are doing yesterday and thought it was just me having bad luck or odd lag issues. I am not crazy if others can see it. What a relief. Anyone else see green men spying on them from behind the couch?

Noticed yesterday that the quest you're in makes a huge difference. I was in one Feywild quest where the hirelings and the mobs only updated/moved like every 30 seconds. Gave up and went to another Feywild quest nearby - No problem. Went back to that original quest - Same problem.

DDO Hirelings have no AI. Only AS. Artificial Stupidity.

In seriousness, I am not sure it's 100% on the hirelings' coding, as I've been running into an issue where even the mobs and bosses freeze up and don't do anything. It's like the entire game's AI locks up with lag, but I'm not, or at least not so bad that I can't kill everything before they wake up.

Running Wheloon (so sue me, I needed them for my spread sheet. Otherwise I'd never run those horrible things again without threats of violence against my person. Even then, I'd weigh the odds that I could take the one threatening me first, or at least the thought that death is preferable to running Wheloon) I think maybe only one out of every three mass blobs of mobs actually did anything, even if I didn't tentacle them first. I've been seeing it for some time now; at least as far back as my deep insect thing wizard EK life, which was 3 lives back. So while the lag was made worse by Mabar 2, this has been going on since well before the last time Cove was around. Maybe since Myth Drannor hit actually, though I've ran so many lives this year that they're blurring together.

Of course, running Threnal was an even greater exercise in frustration, as Coyle also froze up and wasn't following me. I gave up and used YouTube videos to find the XP numbers for those, and figure that I will never ever run them again either.
