What was Better? The Sega Genesis or the Super Nintendo?

I had (and still have) both, but my vote goes to the Genesis (or Mega Drive as it was called in Germany)
I just was never really into the Nintendo IPs like Mario or Zelda... so for me personally, the Mega Drive had way better games and I prefer its controller as well.

SNES Chrono trigger was revolutionary for its time

Epic time travel saga multiple endings new game plus and team combos

the sega one had "blast processing", so of course it was the better one!

all marketing jibberish and corpo nonsense aside, the snes was the one we settled for. and it was completely worth it for the rpgs it had.

terranigma is my favourite till this day. not as good as chrono trigger or the other big ones, but man. this game has a story that invokes that childlike adventure of discovery, with a nice twist in the middle to sweeten the deal. shame enix got absorbed into square. we dont get games like this anymore.

(i still whistle the hometown theme from terranigma to this day when visiting villages or the countryside. same as i do with the pokke village theme. its just that good)

The sequel was good too across dimensions and that bad guys weren't so bad

Good guys always braking into there homes killing there friends and family braking and taking all there stuff

Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive

For these reasons/ games:

1) Dungeons and Dragons - Warriors of the eternal sun.
2) Dune 2
3) Sonic 3

Still got the game cartidges but no more game console. But luckily today you don't have to chose anymore thanks to the emulators. I just wish the game companies would make it possible to get one or the other old gem legally for emulation. Some have done it. Got me some Sega games for the tablet, but the UI isn't that good on tablets though.

Mario was better than Sonic. SNES had Mega Man. Phantasy Star and Sword of Vermillion were good but the Squaresoft RPGs were better. Genesis has many decent adventure games, but A Link to the Past outshines them all. Donkey Kong Country was better than all the many edgelord action platformers SEGA put out.

However, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe were better than SNES Beat 'em Ups except Turtles in Time. Sonic 2 is a masterpiece. Ninja Gaiden took a backseat to Shinobi in the 16 bit era. I love Adventure Island, but its twin brother Wonder Boy is better.

It's a close call, but SNES is just a smidge better to me. They had more of the heavy hitters because they had the foundation the NES era laid. I knew one person with a SEGA Master System, and didn't even know that's what it was until I got older and learned SEGA had a console before Genesis. I think if SEGA had more tried and true third party games, it would have been the clear winner.

Nintendo seems to be more like SEGA these days in this regard. They still have their first party stars, but most of the stand-out third party games are either also on the other systems or exclusive to them.

So, we had access to both in my household - I had the SNES, and my sister had a Genesis. So, I had access to the best of both worlds and for me, if I had to choose one, it would be the SNES all over again. Fantastic RPGs, great beat em ups and shoot em ups, good fighting games, great platformers - just an all around great system. Sega had some bangers, too, but for me, my heart will always be with the SNES.

SNES and I dont think its particularly close. Most of my favs have been mentioned but I thought I would shout out some that I didnt see mentioned F-Zero, Star Fox, Secret of Mana, Final Fight, Killer Instinct, Super Bomberman. Thats without mentioning any of the franchises like Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Donkey Kong etc.

Yes I loved Sonic and Streets of Rage etc but SNES line up was really strong especially when counting the NES classics that were ported over.

Exactly the same. I had the SNES in my room and my sister had the Genesis. I preferred my SNES. But loved alot of Genesis games. The 3 button controller on the Genesis hindered it IMO. SEGA made a slower 6 button controller for games like mortal kombat and street fighter 2, but they weren't as good. Original John Madden Football on the Genesis? Wow. If you like sports games only, Genesis hands down.
