Stepping into the wayback, 13/6/1 rogue/monk/druid quarterstaff build when Druid first dropped. Shillelagh for the extra +1w when that was more meaningful, light path for a non-trivial amount of healing, and stout oak walking stick. I think I learned to carry two spares because of how fragile those could be. Epic Nat Gann for silver DR breaking. A DPS machine prone to getting shredded if I wasn’t really careful to avoid aggro. But so much fun.
Sounds awesome!

Blaster Flameclensed Fury Warlock... having been doing racials since I played it for the first time... it will be already almost 25 consecutive lifes so far.
What does the split / setup look like for this? Is it smooth from 1-20?

As someone who plays primarily melees, while it was very demanding to play compared to say Dragonlord or Barbarian, of the classes I've gone through in the past year Handwrap Pure Monk post monk pass was the most interesting. It has so many options and it's extremely strong.

I use 41TS for pact/blast dices - 31ES for Bulk/Medium Armor/Imbues (19 at lv 30)/rest on SE for Consume. Fire/Light damage easy to scale (Immune enemies die to Finger of Death or Hurl Through Hell or Trap the Soul) and Howl of Terror is one of the best CC on Epics.

I have being solo R1 1-30 without any issue.

Wait I vaguely remember this, what was the deal? Or am I just thinking of monk wraps specifically losing some +W (among other things…) circa Strahd
I missed the change as I was on break, but if you look more closely, you'll notice that a lot of / most abilities that gave +W are gone from the game, replaced by a flat +% damage. Meaning your base damage dice have less of an impact.

This combined with the fact that to legendary weapons have non-standard damage dice, it's all 1dX+Y at best, even for weapons that have non-standard heroic versions. No non-standard crit range and multi either...

I mean, it does come out to some sort of new balance curve by level 34, but it's not as fun as the previous system. Neither is it as intuitive (to me).

  • Always a favorite: wizard, sorcerer, favored soul, cleric, druid, alchemist, bard
  • Pleasantly surprised: vistani mach robot artificer, SDK SWF chainz DL (18/1/1 with barb and rogue), PDK swash (18/1/1 with bard/fighter/fvs)
  • Bad to solo but a blast in groups: 12 rogue / 6 DH / 2 artificer inquisitive
  • Easy but boring: anything THF, SWF pally in low levels, warlock
  • Hated: qstaff monk (was pre-pass, too flimsy but could have been a gear gap)
I have not tried post-pass monk, or ranger since the old 18/1/1 exploiter build days. You can probably tell that I like builds with a lot of buttons to press. Monk was the exception because I kept missing my finishers and getting torn to shreds by the most basic enemies.

I keep thinking back to the first life that felt super right, and for me it was right after Sacred Fist came out. I designed a build around monk’s Abundant Step, which really worked out, because apparently I just love movespeed. I was thrilled to be using Maetrim’s builder for the first time, and I was amazed at how much charisma synergy I could find in Sacred Fist (and how much thematic stuff could center around light damage, fire damage, sun stance, Divine Crusader, etc.).

This was after my first attempt at an ultimate DPS build - daggers and swashbuckling was my first try - but this time after deciding I needed saves, defenses in addition to DPS if I actually wanted to solo legendary R2.

The result? I was amazed to find that I could solo R2! Actually, the whole life, all through heroics, I was amazingly pleased with my speed, power, and style. And once I found Goldcursed, I could even sit comfortably in R4 solo and higher.

I’m curious what life comes to mind for you!
Considering my first ever human 15 ranger / 5 rogue deepwood sniper with no trapping skills 15 years ago doesn't count, I have to say my half-elf dragonmark of storm artificer pre-artificer update. Tier 5 harper agent made my repeater 'good' and since battle engineer was terribad while arcanotechnitian was even worse back then, I had enough points to get call lightning storm from half-elf dragon mark. We didn't even have warlock dilitante back then and I don't know if you guys remember but half-elves used to look soooo ugly! The idea was to somehow get arcane archer stuff on the repeater (they used to somehow work back then?) but I discovered that AP are not infinite.

So hard to decide. These are the Alts I am currently running and I enjoy playing all of them

Tabaxi Dark Hunter (completionist - currently at level 18 - just wish the wolf was better).
Gnome Wizard (PM/Archmage) - currently TR'd into a Dhampir Dark Apostate
Elf Ranger (Deepwood Sniper/AA) - my original character from 2006 - only 2 lives - left at cap waiting
Half Orc Barbarian (FB) - 3 past lives - currently at cap - when new content comes out this is my tester
Tiefling Bard (Swashbuckler)

If they ever add toggles to turn ground effects on/off - I would love to dust off the Tabaxi Trailblazer DragonLord/Rogue (which is my only multi-class character) I created and has never moved from level 15.

Very cool, good to know! I’ve seen others kick serious ass on pure monk lately, too (both shuri and wraps, which is cool).

I’m guessing wraps is probably actually the highest single-target melee DPS rn… although whether monk or shifter, I couldn’t say.

Bow Ranger and stick Monk.

Ive always loved bows no matter how gimp they are compared to xbows, and stick Monk is just crazy zerg obliterate everything without stopping.

I wish there were more bow rangers running around!

Since the increase in damage with the 1.5x stat change its a bit better. Still a long way behind but I do enjoy it anyway. Sometimes its better to play what is fun rather than what is stupidly OP.

I really didnt enjoy when I played a dual xbow build.

Next life my group will all be playing gxb builds. They havent played it in years and I never played one. Should be interesting. We will be down a lot on our usual DPS but there should at least be plenty of knockdown fun.

First life was da best. Everything was fresh and new. Almost died in the harbor due to a lack of featherfall.. 🤭
I played a halfling rogue the first time around which felt pretty good. I really like it as a class, but it could be much better (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, SSG...) I liked the idea of playing as an assassin, but that really only worked (kinda) in solo play unless I was with a bunch of other assassin/stabby types...

At some point I re-spec'd the character for ranged combat, and that felt much better to my play style. For the second life I switched over to artificer and that would be my happy spot for the most part. A very flexible "jack of all trades" class IMO. I will be going back to rogue at some point, but I'm probably going to stick to arti for racial lives (plus I already have the gear for it semi-dialed in..)

4 of us, though one mostly hangs out at the dungeon entrances and the other 3 of us do the completions. The dirty piker takes part from time to time. He does have reasons behind not being able to participate much so we enjoy teasing him about it.

Playing a cleric in 2006. In a guild of friends, where we would wind up at the end of the session with less xp than when we started.

Somehow, through multiple chained party wipes we all managed to reach maximum level (10th I think at the time).

"I get knocked down, but I get up again" was the guild motto.

I really liked Dragon Lord when I ran it x3 as a Dragon Born - I think it was more the dragon on dragon vibe than anything else - got sick of the green dragon mount on these runs ... but it was the only mount thta worked with a dragon born dragon lord - i should have splashed dragon disciple in the mix - could of, would of, should of - but i didnt

I really liked the 4/9/7 Arti/Ranger/Rogue Inquiz with dual Xbows for the first 12 life's - I also did another dozen or so combinations of inquiz w/Fvs added to the mix - probably my favorite playstyle until the nerfed it or broke it and introduced that time delay un-natural range feel

AA Elf was a fun ride for several life's

Paladin Warforged and Bladeforged Paladins is a lot of stupid fun

So it looks like Im a fan of 2 handed smash and pew pewers... however I also had a ton of fun with swashies once

I tried to make sword n board, furries and casters work for me but every time I tried one of them, i couldn't wait to get out of them.

maybe i just need the right builds?
