When to go for Heroic Completionist....

Not sure if this should go into the "New Player" post, because even after 14 months I still feel like a noob...,

A little pre-amble, I am on my eighth life and play exclusively with my completionist brother. Right now we have a good combo going of me tanking and him being a Rogue and backstabbing and killing everything. My question is when is it time to go for Heroic Completionist? Should I plan for it now and start expanding the classes I use or continue to just use Fighter/Paladin/Barbarian and work on Epic lives/racials.

Thanks in advance,
Kirk

Whatever you're enjoying is what you should go after. Past lives come quickest when you're having fun and thus wanting to play a bunch. When you start feeling the itch to try other classes & change things up then go for those past lives.

You aren't grinding anything when you take a 3 month break because you're lost in the quagmire of 3 racial gnome lives and if you have to run Ravenloft again, you're going to scream.

For me I go for strategic heroic PL benefits and ignore Completionist until I suddenly look and go Woah, I'm not that far off from Completionist!

I was in a similar position; my regular duo-buddy was (and still is) my house mate / best friend.

I changed my play style once I got enough equipment for "named set" bonuses. Saltmarsh (level 3), then Feywild (5), then Dread (7), then Ravenloft (10) and recently Myth Drannor (13). I like the Myth Drannor equipment so much I no longer worry about upgrades for Sharn (15) and Vecna (18). This means that I used to Heroic TR at 20 and cycle through each class to get completionist. Very rarely did I run an epic life.

After gaining completionist I had lots of equipment -- so much that most of my account slots are taken up with equipment mules, one for each expansion set.

I then started running each life to level 30
(1) heroic + epic for a racial life, or
(2) iconic + epic for an iconic life
... only then did I realise that I could have got several of my class lives for completionist as part of my iconic class. Iconic Shifter count as a Barbarian life, Iconic Tiefling as a Bard and so on. I wish I had realised this sooner, as the level 15 equipement you are given free as an iconic is perfectly fine for levelling all the way to 30 on Reaper 1, and the named equpiment you pick up along the way makes the next life a little easier.

I have currently "parked" my first main toon at level 34, mostly doing sagas (when my duo buddy is not around) that offer cards as an end reward (Ravenloft, Feywild, Sharn, Saltmarsh, Dread, Vecna, Myth Drannor) and collect huge numbers of Filigrees along the way for sentient items. I have enough cards to curse the low level equipment my "new main" is wearing. Those many mules provide a huge store of duplicate items so I can curse several identical items and choose the one with the best curse. Occasionally I will keep a "melee curse" version and a "Warlock curse" version. The items with useless curses are used as sentient food.

My "new main" is doing one each of the iconic lives to contribute to class completionist. If I find a class is particulalry fun, I will do an Epic TR back to level 20 and then level up to 30 again. Sometime I do several epic cycles, but so far 5 epics in a row is the most I have done (that was a Warlock build with an item curse that gives +2 pact and another item curse that gives +2 imbue dice). I am looking forward to the new Warlock-based iconic in the expansion pack coming in (about) August 2025, even though I have one Warlock life already. After all the iconics, I intend to run the other classes one by one until I get completionist. By that stage, I will have identified a favorite class (Artificer for a long time, currently it is acid-based Warlock). I then run that class over and over for the racial completions. I have done 3 x Assimar, 3 x Dragonboren and 2 x Drow (and on my third Drow life at the moment).

As others have said, do what you find the most fun. I found casters like Wizard, Sorcerer and Cleric to be hard work, so I take my first 9 levels as an Artificer and the other 11 levels as the "proper" class that I want for completionist. My duo buddy used lots of +3 and +5 hearts of wood so he could take 12 (or more) levels as Artificer and then lesser reincarnate to change the mix of levels to have 11 levels of the "proper" class before the TR. 12 levels of Artificer is a sweet spot for DPS and the new AoE shots are just awesome for killing groups before they can even aggro ... and that is on Reaper 4.

You would get more results out of a triple racial completionist.

Me.

I play sporadically because I tried forcing tr train and it led to burnout

In truth, there is no right or wrong answer to this. I've been playing since 2007, and there have been times when I've had a whole stable of Alts at cap to be able to run various end game content, with no intention of reincarnating. There has been times when the thought of running another end game raid made going to the dentist seem like a better option. There have been times when I've worked the TR hamster wheel as fast as possible, and others when I take a I'll get there when I get there attitude.

Of late, I'm almost done with my heroic past lives (haven't started a racial reincarnation yet), with only Druid and Warlock to go. Depending on how I enjoy the build depends on whether I reincarnate as soon as I hit 20 or if I go to 30 and do a ER & TR at the same time. I've also adopted a one and done mindset for questing. I run each quest only once on Elite or Reaper (for max favor / first time bonuses) and wont repeat it again, with exceptions for sagas and quests that give tokens, but even then I limit myself to a couple times per life. This way, I see many quests, some that would often be skipped in the earlier days, simply because you'd run the same ones over and over because of better/faster XP.

Basically, I play a life until I get bored with it, then I reincarnate and start over. I'm not in a rush to get "Completionist".

I liked doing 1 to 34 racial and epic then back to 1 again. great bang for the buck.

The +1 ability score and +1 Racial Action point really adds up.

Do what you enjoy though and have fun!

When I finally decided to go for heroic completionist I just used Iconic lives to grab the ones I did not have. Completionist is very worthwhile since it isn't lost every year or so the way that racial is, and since they have moved to "archetypes" it might never be lost again. One thing that is nice about Heroic and Iconic lives is that you only "need" some of them, where every character benefits from getting all Racial + Epic.
If you plan to do Epics back to back you will need to plan different routes as losing first time bonus absolutely destroys run 2+. Preference is generally to pair Racial and Epic together to avoid that issue.

I would start by pairing up epic and racial reincarnations (level 1 to 30, epic reincarnate and then racial reincarnate) until you get racial completionist. That will give you majority of the epic lives (48/54 once dhampir is released). Then you can pair heroic and iconic lives (level 15-30 and then iconic reincarnate which will give the iconic and heroic past lives).

After the above, you'll only have a handful of epic lives left, and some heroic lives if you want to get 3x heroic past lives
