It's honestly pretty amazing to watch. I don't know how exactly they code the hire AI but that lady just does not give a flying eff about the health of the player or pacing herself, just on causing wonton destruction.

This. Absolutely. Larafay is a force of nature and a sight to behold... for about 30 seconds. Then she is a walking soulstone-in-waiting.
Best to park her at the entrance and call her in time for the big fights, stand back, and watch the light show.

I like Althea, the lvl 16 FVS. She actually does what she is supposed to do and rarely runs off to attack unseen monsters. She heals reliably.

Mikayl is uniquely helpful.

My favorite is Frogo though. He's just the coolest. Hops around, does traps, wears a neat hat, has the best dance.

Samuel Merrik is my hero. At level 9 he gives critical heals and can raise the dead when he fails. He was always the best party member.

My vote is for Rana Leafheart. She stays off trouble and knows what she's doing. Although I don't know why she loves that bow so much as she never explain.

Rana is really interesting. She has the same die in lava problem as all hirelings but because she is ranged she rarely moves except under duress.

Also, she will ping-ping-ping mobs until they die if you are busy elsewhere which is often the case.

Albereth > Bulwark at level 30 any day, every day, even when I'm running on my SP-eating FDI cleric/fighter build and might want a DV or two.

Ironically my autistic brain has already made a list on exactly this topic to help my leveling process when I'm feeling lazy. Here are my contenders, in order, for best hireling (excluding permanents because I do not have them).

2. Darnis Spinethorn
3. Namisa Korclaw
4. Larafay Do'rret
5. Sigil
6. Barrage
7. Ruthok Hourig
8. Nimeth Celibel
9. Mikayl the Pius
10. Byron Scoutsword

All other hirelings I find are either not particularly noteworthy or are downright terrible.
