Why fart noises are such a bad thing in a game

It is ok to have such a thing in game so people can have fun, but it should be something controllable, like a certain mount or a pet that would make such a noise when summoned, or some time limited event specific item.

And then you would at times encounter a troll player that would spam it and it might be fun.

Having this in an uncontrollable class ability does not seem like a nice place for such a thing.

I don't think it belongs at all in a product with an almost entirely adult audience and subject matter. Just imagine if Legolas and Gimli were breaking wind together in the Lord of the Rings films... "Hey, it was only during the Battle of Helm's Deep. At least they didn't go overboard with it."

Not to mention other hampering mechanics - killed class for me. sadly worst iconic experience imo. dark gifts made much better at least you have choice.

The issue isn’t intent. It’s impact.

  • Forced audio spam — If the game constantly plays loud, comedic noises, it clutters the soundscape. Players can’t hear footsteps, spells, gunshots, or team callouts.
  • Immersion break — In serious or atmospheric games, nonstop fart noises destroy the tone. Even players who like humor get tired of it.
  • Social frustration — People get annoyed at the character, and by extension at the person playing it, even though you didn’t choose the mechanic.
  • Team disadvantage — If your character’s noises reveal your position or drown out tactical sounds, teammates suffer.

Game designers rarely force repetitive joke sounds because:

  • Humor fatigue — A joke repeated hundreds of times becomes irritation, not comedy.
  • Accessibility issues — Some players are sensitive to repetitive noises; it can cause headaches or sensory overload.
  • Audio readability — Games rely on clear sound cues. Constant joke noises ruin that clarity.

Even if the player isn’t choosing to make fart noises, other players still experience the noise as “coming from you.” Humor becomes unintentional griefing simply because it’s constant and unavoidable.

It’s not your fault — it’s a design flaw.

My recommendation: Just blame the dog, like everyone else does, and move on ;)

I think on R10 casters should have a small chance to fizzle a spell and poo their pants. They can use a different fart sound for it, though. They should get the Soiled Robes debuff that reduces their movement speed by 10%. You also get You Have Trouble Concentrating because you got doody britches and get a -10 to Concentration. SSG loves this kind of content.

I hereby petition for a new spell: the Finger of Doody Britches. Instantly defeats any monster from stinky embarrassment. /s

Though agree the fart noise gets old. It's not just this sound in the game that's annoying though.

Wild Mage is my favourite class. Maybe if they added fart sounds to Inquisitive more players would understand.

Ah I see your point then, I'm all for something bad happening in game including an actual noticeable negative for the player (EG atreus' combat utility being uncontrollable during the bit where he's being stroppy in God of War (2018)) but not for an actual non-negative reaction.

Just want to make sure people know this has no basis in fact, utter nonsense. Disrupting the forums or other violations might cause you to get a warning (not ban), but just posting AI is no issue and never has been. Quite a few players dislike AI posting on these forums (it's an even bigger issue on the LOTRO side), so expect to get reported if you use it, but we have no issue nor have ever had an issue with its usage in a general sense.
