Wooden Warrior (13 Blight Caster/6 Monk/1 Rogue)

Hello everyone,

I've made after many attempts (just because I like Shillelagh spell a lot) a hybrid Blightcaster/Monk/Rogue q-staff build that I believe is viable. So i ask for your help for any ideas to make it better.

It's a 28-point build (so anyone can use it), but I use falconry in it. F2P (strength based) should also be viable with just attributing those 14 points I used in falconry to blightcaster tree to get Thorn bloom SLA and strength enhancements.

Playstyle:
  • The whole idea is to use thorns SLA to attack enemies from afar and in close combat to use entangle/spike growth for bonuses (slowing down enemy if you are lucky) and cloud spells to avoid getting hit
  • Before battle, at later levels, you can use water-light-water moves to buff with 25% sp reduction.
  • Used Path of Harmonious Balance instead of Inevitable Dominion cause dark monk moves have save dc based on monk level.
  • The one rogue level is for the +15% in q-staff attack speed and opening locks. With tomes and later lives disabling traps should work too.
  • Thorn Imbue (1d6 100% Force) is active. Not sure if Venomed Blades (1d8 200% melee) worth the 4 enhancment points.
  • Wooden quarterstaff for +2[W] from shillelagh.
Well thats all. The main flaws I see is not enough spell dc (but not much i can do for that) and destiny points attribution. Still don't know if I should have focused on shadowmancer instead of grandmaster.

Thanks in advance.

Interesting idea!

Don't have a lot of suggestions, but in Primal Avatar I would probably take Reborn in Fire for a burst heal, and slot a devotion ruby.

I would also take Precision stance rather than Power Attack. The extra +hit and bypass are much more useful in epic and legendary.

Don't forget to use Sleet Storm! Free AoE blind/sneak attack on everything that's not immune.

Tried that at first, unfortunately 28-point build doesn't have enough points for 13 dexterity. So I chose to sacrifice that over opening locks and ki.

If taking rog/arti/dark hunter levels, I suggest taking at level 1 for more skill points to start for your dd/search etc
Unfortunately you can't do that here. Since its a hybrid build the feats are very tight.
Assuming you take rogue for lvl 1, the 2 feats (standard and human feat) can't be the metamagic ones, since you need a caster lvl to get them. So your only option are THF and power attack. But taking those 2 there means you can't utilize monk's class bonus feats for them, forcing you to take 2 other feats on monk bonus, which won't be metamagic feats.

Increase rogue, drop monk to improve DPS & defense; eg. 6 rogue 3 monk will permit 50%'ish dodge at cap, 8 rogue unlocks improved uncanny dodge, 10+ rogue for defensive-roll. (but lots of rogue kills theme).

Rogue's sweeping strikes is an AE trip @ 15s that is amazing. You won't need other CC than this, but it requires 3 rogue. You'd still use blight for buffs and heals, though usually post-fight.

Consider Draconic Mantle + Ki Bolt from Tilo's Muggle Monk. If you gear for spell power and spell crit on a single element, this is definitely a worthwhile single-target DPS boost.

Consider FOTW for increasing staff DPS and heals; it's pretty much as good as trees get for sticks.

There's some great ideas in this thread and I'm thinking that my next 9 lives are likely to be Tabaxi Trailblazer 13BC/6Monk/1Fighter for all the bonus feats as well as possibly a Halfing 13BC/5Rogue/2Monk and Eladrin 13BC/5Rogue/2Monk.

Just wondering how you get to 50%ish dodge with 6 rogue/3monk and whether you think losing the Hive Master/Thorn Knight feat at BC13 is worth the trade off in your mind?

Also, is there a clear advantage of one or the other when comparing Hive Master with Master of Earth versus Thorn Knight with Master of Thorns?

Your idea for an ED OF Draconic is interesting. I'm thinking of going the Adrenaline route with most points backed up by some points in FOTW and Primal for the Shard Storm. I think Adrenaline is a lot stronger than Drifting Lotus atm, but FOTW is still valuable for some low hanging options.

I also found that my Enhancement points stretch more if I go the Dex damage route rather than Wis through Falconry. It means I need to spend 14 points in HW universal tree.

A big thank you to Jodro for this Wooden Warrior concept. I'm very excited to try out all these build options. Please continue sharing variations and alternate options for this concept as I think there's quite a few paths that can be explored without losing the overall feel of the build.

Technically, all you'd need is 1 monk to unlock grandmaster of forms for 12 Dodge 8 Dodge Cap. You'd need to take T5 in TA for 5 Dodge Cap and Scion of Astral for 8 Dodge/Cap while centered. That puts you at 48 dodge. TA core 3 and/or more points in Grim Barricade brings you over 50.

IMHO, then entire druid part of the build is detrimental to a stick melee build and vice-versa. Concealment is doesn't work in reaper. The 100 Fortification from Knight is nice, but 13 Druid is a steep cost. OTH, sometimes I'll run weird builds for fun or for a PL with an odd carry just to avoid farming more gear (and stick is a great melee carry for anything).

If you're instead intent on making a caster druid, I'd drop monk and rogue and ignore melee entirely. It's really easy to run a caster druid with all metas on 100% of the time and never run out of SP at cap. I had my doubts, but then I tried it and yup, it really does never run out (evergreen + draconic cores).
Your idea for an ED OF Draconic is interesting. I'm thinking of going the Adrenaline route with most points backed up by some points in FOTW and Primal for the Shard Storm.
As a melee, you could use the one remaining good breath in Draconic (the AE centered on you), but Adrenaline is also an incredibly nice choice. Which to pick would depend on how focused your gear is on caster v melee and that depends on personal taste.
I also found that my Enhancement points stretch more if I go the Dex damage route rather than Wis through Falconry. It means I need to spend 14 points in HW universal tree.
HW Trance refreshes very slowly. There aren't any better options for 2H DPS, though -- throw, swf, & twf can pickup imbue & sneak dice in assassin, but 2H attack rate isn't high enough to make that pay off more than trance as it does with other styles.

First of, thanks for all the responses, love the fact that people can evolve it into countless other builds.

So now, since there are many options I think its helpful to also have my reasoning on why I have that split into 13 Blight Caster/6 Monk/1 Rogue and mantles.

13 Blight is obviously because of Thorn knight, but also has some other uses. The obvious one is to have my few buffs for as long as possible, 13 mins is decent time.
The other is for thorn strike and splinterbolt, they have max caster level at 10 and 12 (and +3 from thorn knight, +10 from master of thorns) so with 13 blight caster I get almost their full damage (its almost cause you could get +2 more max caster from season's herald tree as caster). Sure they ain't the best spells, weak and only hit one enemy, but they also don't have a saving throw and they are dirt cheap as slas. Also every melee character has met those annoying archers, shamans ect that stand somewhere unreachable and just shoot you, well now you can hit em too.
If i had to stop Blight caster earlier, so forgetting thorn strike and splinterbolt, I would stop at lvl 6 to get thorn in at lvl 4 and +2[W] from shillelagh (3rd core of season's herald).

6 monk was for the stance, +3 imbue and a tiny extra in defense. Instead of 6 monk/1 rogue you could have 7 rogue, I don't think there will be much difference, rogues quarterstaff tree is better too.
I chose 6 monk/1 rogue to get a free adept at forms, 3 extra feats and +15% attack speed. If you do 7 rogue you can skip stance and you are just 1 feat less (in heroic, 0 less overall), but get better moves, tree and skills, so I deem it as equal. With 1 monk/6 rogue and stance then you are 2 feats less and i don't think it worth the trouble to try to be centered just for this one monk level.

Regarding epic levels and mantle, I chose grandmaster of flowers tree for the ki and extra melee bonuses, but tbh i didn't put much thought to it, it just seemed like a decent tree. I guess Fury of the Wild tree is a great choice too, I'll have to look into it more then the time for lvl 20 comes.
I had no idea about the combo of draconic mantle and ki bolt, its awesome, but i see that ki bolt depends on caster level (in that case monk) so here with just 6 monk levels doesn't seem much. Definatelly gonna use it on a monk with fire schimitars i'm working on, thanks.
The points in Primal avatar are for small bonuses that are passively useful and in shadowdancer is because cores give force and melee, which are the main 2 things this build uses.
For same reason I chose Scion of Arborea, small bonus in both melee and force.

I just ran a staff build with 6 Blightcaster for +3W (shillelagh gives +2, bone paws affix gives +1)

I ran mine as 10 Rogue, 6 Blightcaster, 4 Dragonlord.

10 rogue is mainly for sneak attack dice and Defensive Roll.

6 Blightcaster is all you need for Wellspring and Bone Paws to get +3W. I didn't think going to Thorn Knight was worth it.

4 Dragonlord is for Cower and Strength trance, plus tactics DCs and the Trip + Sunder combo meal.

For Epic Destinies I did T5 in LD, T4 and all cores in Fury of the Wild.

Ran Quick Cutter as my epic strike and used LD mantle for another +1W.

In endgame for this build, there aren't very many staves made of wood (shillelagh only works on wood/densewood staves), but the Legendary Broken Oar from crystal cove is quite good with +1 expanded critical threat range.

The build worked really well in my opinion. Tons of damage, lots of AoE, lots of mobility, lots of CC between Cower, Improved Trip, and Sweeping Strikes.

I wasn't aware of the Bone Paws option to get the +1W which is fanastic. It's a pity Bone Paws appears on only 3 items in the game. I've tried to snag the Bracelets of Flourishing Fauna from Myth Drannor, but sadly no luck yet.

Your build looks really interesting and I will have to explore a Dragonlord variant for another life. Is there any particular reason you prefer Quick Cutter to Adrenaline?

Regarding staves, there are a few that are real standouts for me while leveling because they do 2D6 damage instead of D6 like nearly all staves and are also wooden. This will have a multiplier effect with shillelagh and bone paws as you're getting +3W times [2D6] instead of D6. They are as follows:
Stave of the Seer at level 8 does [2D6] + 4 damage with 18-20 crit profile
Stout Oak Walking Stick at level 20 does 3[2D6] + 6 with 19-20 x3 crit profile

I pick up the Legendary Moonbeam at level 29 as it's the only wooden qstaff around that level and does [1D6 +4] instead of just [1D6] which many of the level 28 staves are limitied to. It's also got a 19-20 crit profile.

I'm still trying to get the balance right between having some offensive spellcasting and maximising melee damage depending on how many druid levels you pick up. I'm still unsure where the perfect balance for that is yet. I'm also interested if anyone has thoughts on Hive Master versus Thorn Knight. There seems to be better acid spell options for using in epics from what I can tell.

In endgame for this build, there aren't very many staves made of wood (shillelagh only works on wood/densewood staves), but the Legendary Broken Oar from crystal cove is quite good with +1 expanded critical threat range.
it's not really expanded critical threat range, it's just impact which means it doesn't stack with improved critical : bludgeon

The standard profile for a quarterstaff is 20/x2. Impact doubles the crit range of the (base version of the) weapon so that becomes 19-20/x2.

Legendary Broken Oar is 18-20/x2, therefore it has an additional critical threat range. In other words, it's a 19-20/x2 quarterstaff, and it has impact which makes it 18-20/x2.
