I don't think it's a bad concept. I have always thought the best Ranger is a Fighter. I like Elf straight Fighter for Elf having access to the arcane archer tree. Fighter gets a boatload of combat feats so can get all the feats a Ranger gets and more. The main reason I prefer Fighter with a bow...
