issue with using Deck of Many Curses

I've 100+ of each of the 4 cards but when I try to add an unlocked, unequipped gear, I get a message saying that gear can't be added to the card UI window, even after relogs and quits.

Is there a trick to adding gear the to the deck UI?

First you use the cards to make a deck. Then you click on the deck to get a new interface to apply the curse. Also some equipment (quivers) can't be cursed.
