I had this exact problem, and found that my DirectX setting under Options was set to DirectX9. I changed the setting to DirectX10 and DirectX11, and the big, bright glowy square the size of a puzzle tile that completely blocked my view went away. So try changing your DirectX setting in Options and restart the client.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the circle. If they make it able to be toggled off, then I hope it is not grouped up with the rest of the VFX under the "Toggle Overlay Visual Effects" - I want to be able to see it without having to see Stoneskin.

Turning off Advanced Graphics > Post-Processing > Glow Mapping fixes the problem as well, if you are stuck with DirectX 9.
