  • So. . .population is down to half of what it was in may according to some tracking charts. . .moving the average daily player count from 3663 to 2241. . .starting to think that some people might be right about the game dying. Though to be honest. . .it's not really a surprise. . .for a number of reasons.

Of course, 4 out of 8 servers have an average daily of under 200 players it seems at any given time. . .since the hc season is over there's no longer a spike in players in one area. Seems that recent updates are, as predicted (perhaps because they didn't work correctly when applied, imagine that) are driving more people away from the game.

The devs have asked before, over the years, but listening isn't something that's happened before.
Still, will all the bugs reported all over the place with the pack. . .I can't bring myself to buy it. . .I'd rather buy something that works and will be more worth my time then having to dump even more money just to play it normally.

Please no, I just returned from a very long (10 year) break and I'm having so much fun with all the new playstyles and content. I miss the former active PuG scene, but hope the game lives on for at least another 10 years! :)

I'm a relative noob (around 1-2 years playing) to DDO and I'm with you Wender! My hope is that DDO will be around for a bit longer. :)

MMO's I've enjoyed over the years: (other than ddo)
    ---------------------------------------
SWTOR (Starwars the old republic): very well done story line, systems that do what they're suppose to, large inventory and bank system, option for multiple classes on light and dark side, decent crafting/harvesting system, collections and cosmetics - with their own area that doesn't clutter inventory, semi open world areas, balanced dungeons at level, player housing, guild halls, affordable shop items that don't break the bank, decent graphics, responsive support that tries to resolve issues. Good sub benefits.
    ------------
Mabinogi: unique reincarnation/leveling/skill system, fairly balanced dungeons once you know the tricks to mobs, neat crafting and harvesting systems. Sadly this one has fallen it seems to the ptw tactics and has become infested with bots. Anime-ish art style. Ok story lines.
    ------------
Blade and soul: this one is very ptw, but you get what you pay for, no rng when it comes to getting what you want - and items purchased work as advertised. You can of course grind out everything for free - it will take a long time. Helpful/responsive community and support. The graphics are very pretty. The story line is. . .well it's bad, really bad, in the sense it will make you depressed and wonder why you even attempted the game.
    -----------
WOW (world of warcraft): Graphics are . . .eh. . .some areas are nice some are meh. Systems are solid and usually work as described. Xp is pretty standardized. Inventory isn't limited too much or overly expensive. Good sub and guild features. Good gathering/crafting system. Fun and engaging dungeons and raids. Can be very grindy. Semi ok customer support. Story line is ok up to a point, but then can get really out of left field.
    ----------------
City of heroes: Great game play and systems, peculiar crafting, decent inventory, had good sub benefits, had base building/quest building for players - was shut down and stolen by dc. Dc online is a half baked copy of this old wonderful mmo. Engaging quests, the ability to play good or evil.
    ----------------
DC Online: Half baked copy of city of heroes.
    ----------------
New World: It's pretty. . .that's really all it has going for it to be honest. Support is lacking. Crafting/gathering is over run by bots. Duping floods the markets. guild/city systems were poorly designed. Arena/pvp is infested with cheating and bots. Quests are unbalanced. Some quests/systems and items are broken. Had really high hopes for this one when it came out, and was very disappointed in it's development turn - it became some odd arena pvp slog fest with lots of cheating and bots. Not really worth the money.
    ---------------
    Fail out 76 (Fallout 76):
Decent graphics and open world system. Crafting is meh. Story line started out really bad and was more or less a bunch of notes every where - this has improved over the years and there are npcs now. Base building. Pretty solid pve systems. Pvp is still meh and there is an issue with cheating. This is one that is good to play with friends or family if you sub for a private world so you don't have to deal with trolls, and could provide a few months of entertainment before getting bored.
    ---------------
    FF14 (Final fantasy 14 online):
Good graphics, good crafting system, easy inventory management, lots of classes to play with, ok story line. The story line takes a bit to get into and the sheer size of the world makes it easy to get lost in. Fun to play with friends and family. A bit of a steep learning curve. You can play all classes on one character and change out your style with your equipped weapon. Community was pretty friendly last time I played. Responsive and helpful support. Balanced and well designed dungeons and quests. Affordable cash shop. Good benefits for subbing.
    ---------------
    Black Desert:
eh. . .I gave it a try for a few days. To be honest I just couldn't get into it. I found it very dry and boring and unimpressive in every way.
    ---------------
    Neverwinter:
Gave it a try when it came out. Ok graphics. Seemed to be more focused on pvp and arena type stuff, so I didn't spend much time really checking it out.
    ---------------
    Entropia Universe:
Kind of meh graphics for now days. Real cash economy. Very steep learning curve. Very advanced crafting system. Player run stores and planets. Systems very well balanced and work with out bugs. Real cash in game stock market. Semi fun dungeons. Given the game runs off real world money it can be pretty rough to play like other mmo's until you stabilize an income for ammo and repair costs in game. Game currency can be converted to real world currency and sent to your bank, so you actually can make a living playing this game if you devote enough time to learn how. Systems and combat are pretty easy to learn, good tutorial starting up.
    ---------------
    Lost ark:
Honestly it's just another amazon fail, more of a mobi with micro transactions than an actual mmo. It's more or less garbage.
    ---------------
    Rift:
An oldy and goody. There is crafting, but it never really struck a chord with me on rift. Dungeoning and adventuring is constant. More or less run around and do things. I had fun playing, but honestly can't think of anything really memorable about it.
    ---------------
I'm sure there were more over the years, like Everquest back at the end of the 90's. . .but these are the ones that come to mind currently.

Oh, there's one thing about most of these mmo's too that ddo could learn from - customer service and affordable pricing.

I recall playing WoW from 2007-2008. I spent a while playing anime-style MMOs after that and then got into DDO when it went F2P. #history #mmo

I was really into mabinogi once, though I've heard mabinogi has kinda gone down hill over the past few years. The reincarnation system on that game was leagues better than what ddo has. So was the crafting/harvest system (mabinogi). It was really anime ish though graphically, they came out with vindictus and I was hoping it was going to be something like mabinogi 2.0 with better graphics, but it's just an instance runner and pvp deal, so I barely gave it any time.

I'd love to see a game designed like actual sao or log horizon or bofuri's new world online (as illustrated in the manga's or anime), with out the getting stuck in of course, even if they aren't full dive. Just the level of crafting systems and dungeon system designs seem like they would be a lot of fun. . .as well as the custom skill/leveling systems. But, I doubt a company/dev will come along and toss out the money needed for something like that.

I guess I'll put up a bio here, if anyone is interested. Not sure why the about section is only the signature and doesn't have a bio area.
I'm a grouchy old vet, not as old as some. . .but getting there. I enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. I enjoy a variety of music, except rap - but metal, classical, rock, alternative, jazz, and so on are great. I love well done art, but not abstract - I prefer classical art styles to modern. I have many hobby's, from old style masonry to playing games and reading books on a variety of subjects. I enjoy mythology a great deal. I can be rough around the edges and overly crass at times.
