CHA-based Sacred Vanguards

The first build in this thread is an updated version of my PDK paladin Vanguard. Later I may post examples of Feydark Illusionist-based builds. For historical reference and comparison, a couple other build threads:
Note: this is not intended to be a max-AC endgame tank. If that's what you want, maybe have a look at this thread instead. This is intended to squeeze out as much melee DPS as we can from a CHA-based S&B paladin, while having high survivability and good-enough threat management for "casual" tanking.

Requires a +1 Lesser Heart of Wood to get rid of the initial fighter level, +2 STR tome for ITHF/GTHF pre-reqs, and +3 DEX tome for Precision (optional but I prefer it to Power Attack).

The first major build decision is: do you take the Shield Mastery feats manually while leveling for the extra PRR and doublestrike; or do you plan to take Shield Mastery Specialty at level 31 instead, freeing up those feat slots for other things (in this case, Improved Shield Bash, Quicken, and Empower Heal)? Or maybe you level with the Shield Mastery feats, then lesser reincarnate at 31 to switch feats around and take SMS then. I present both options.

The second main issue is Enhancements. If we follow Strimtom's example of combining tier-5 Knight of the Chalice (KotC) with the Vanguard capstone, it looks something like this:

The drawback to this approach is there's no APs to spare for other trees: e.g., defensive bonuses from Sacred Defender. A more balanced approach would be something like this:

+25 PRR/MRR from Sacred Defender to improve survivability; and Haste Boost from Vistani Knife Fighter to improve burst DPS, especially vs bosses who resist Holy Retribution. Or if you don't have Vistani, you can put more points into PDK tree for Great Weapon Aptitude (+20% Strikethrough); or Sacred Defender for +2 Lay on Hands charges and Hardy Defense (+6 CON).

Epic Destinies: there are a lot of options, of course, but I want to focus on Divine Crusader + Unyielding Sentinel, which is how I feel S&B paladin is "meant" to be played, with a mix of DPS, party support (mostly from Consecration), survivability, and threat-aggro bonuses. The third ED can be whatever complements the rest of your build; here I go Dreadnought for Dire Charge and +1 Imbue dice.

Is the master builder back? I am loving this.
I'm like the retired semi-pro player who coaches a Little League team on weekends. The Bad News Bears of MMOs. :cool:
How good is the DPS for heroics? or would you recommend that I go with THF for DPS pally?
It's an Iconic so heroics lasts like, what, a weekend? But most of the time, the correct DPS response is "grab a Sword of Shadows for levels 10-19."

As it says in the OP: "This is intended to squeeze out as much melee DPS as we can from a CHA-based S&B paladin, while having high survivability and good-enough threat management for 'casual' tanking."

Nice build, I'm currenty running a PDK S&B paladin (bastard sword Helm-based) as the Strimtom build, using STR, but this approach looks better to me. Gonna hit level cap and use a lesser reincarnation to make this build. Any advice on gearing? I was planning to use Saltmarsh/Forbidden Knowledge/Lost Purpose items.
Big question: why do you pick 2 Epic strikes? which tactical DC do you use for CC? Shatter? Trip?

This variant is based on other PDK tank builds such as this one but more lowbie-friendly for someone who doesn't have Triple Completionist everything etc. Its focus is more on pure tanking so DPS will be quite a bit lower, particularly while leveling. Hitting things is more about generating threat, not killing them.

Tower shield proficiency comes from UMDing Master's Touch scrolls which are bought from the Portable Hole.

This is not dissimilar to the build I am currently running. 7 in pdk (for strikethrough) _49_ in vanguard (shield all the things!) 8 in vkf, 11 in kotc (for ghost touch), 8 in sacred defender. I am finding I am a bit more squishy thank I would like, but at 22 I am running r1 in tank-lite mode for all the estar quests, either solo or with a friend. Druids curse put me at a solid 3 level disadvantage in reaper, but I can get through it.

My biggest problems are sustain. I just don't have much in the way of self heal. I think that might be fixed with some gear updates to include positive spellpower but I am not sure.
