Bug report: 329556

Apparently this bug has been around a while. I can't recall getting bitten by it in recent years, but for me is getting bad/worse very recently.

My last 3-out-of-4 log in attempts were without sound, and that 4th was a frozen load screen.

Would like to see this get a bump in priority.

This happens to me randomly. Most of the time it works but I would say 1 out of 10 logins it happens.
It does not matter if my PC has been on for a day or two or just rebooted. All other sound works.

I had always assumed it was someone not loading properly during the client loading. My sound is through HDMI to my monitor/TV but it also did it when I had speakers connected to the audio out. The only option is "none" when it acts up. So far exiting the client and reloading works to sort it out.

Same Fluff, different day.

It went fine for a week, just long enough to cool down from the last go-round with this bs. Then today...

3 log in attempts, 2 to character select where it's obvious there's no sound.
Log all the way in to my silent character, confirm I have no sound, and nothing in options to select an output.
^did piddle with mailbox and DD roll long enough for chat server to say it was connected. yay?
Log in again, have sound on character select screen. Yes! .... Game's brain walks away in the load screen.
Log in again.... no fgging sound.

You know damn well if I typed what I really wanna say at thiis point you'd put me on vacation. Fix this!

What do you call a thing that pops up on your device while trying to do something else, that refuses to close by any means short of a computer restart, and if you engage with said thing it damages/destroys something on your device. (Hint, they call those Viruses.)

Not related to the topic, but tired of grumbling about this elsewhere. Click Yes, it wipes my settings. Click No, it wipes my settings. Click the X, it sits there chuckling. Try to End Process in Task Manager, it chuckles more. Pops up at random times usually at after server selection.

...and it's sitting right in the middle of my screen as I'm typing this waiting for another computer restart.

And it's not the reverse where your settings got wiped so it pops this message up trying to figure out what you want to run the game as? Are you running one drive on your system by any chance?

I've been running a team of 5 for the last two weeks. My experience matches that reported by Onyxia2016--sound does not load about one time in 10. With 5 clients running, 4 will be fine, one is borked. Curiously, I have never experienced two clients with borked sound with 5 running. On multiple occasions, I have logged in a single client and the sound borked.

I can do things others can't...

I haven't run into this issue in a long time.

Usually the causes are when you log in again after shortly logging out of DDO and the client process of the previous DDO client was still shutting down. So I've often staggered my log in when going with multiple clients by seeing the game client pop up first before attempting the next one.

Incidentally, this is also the same process that I utilise to have a reduced chance of sound not loading in properly for a particular client. It can still happen, just much less likely. Although in this case it is through waiting until it's about to load the character selection screen before I hit enter to log in. Also, unsure if stated here or in previous linked posts, but leaving the login client part way loaded (not yet selcted server) whilst you do other things, tends to cause it to end up with sound issues.

Patience in short, is the way to least likely experience these issues.

Finally, I am unsure if this still works, as again it's been a long time since I ran into this issue (was still on Windows 7 and 8/8.1 when I needed to do this). I "think" the preferences file hasn't been reset to defaults yet and you can navigate to the folder and make a copy of it. Then clink on yes/no, whatever and let it reset or change settings. Then close the login client. Wait a second or two, then delete the newly default preferences file, and replace with your just made preferences file with the old settings and keybindings to continue with how it was before. I believe the other option that was often used to mitigate this issue was to have a backup of the preferences file on hand once you have everything the way you want to and then replace as needed whenever it happens again.

Note, I'm not saying it shouldn't be sorted out by SSG better, just that until they do, we players need to have our own ways to tackle issues. Hope these helps anyone in the mean time.

@Rapid - negative on the OneDrive.

@Jing - Tried that before, but tried again. After replacing it, just get another pop-up. When this first started (this time) I had logged out of game, opened market web site and bought a couple morsels for an alt account, then tried logging in to that account. Plenty of rest time between the log out & in. :(

When I give it a click to proceed in to game, it starts off with the intro vid and the sound settings MAXED! That adds some spicy gravy to an already irritating situation.

When you replaced the file, was it an already processed and all working in game preferences file? Or one that was already defaulted?

I just tried deleting my preferences file, starting the client up and had it provide some default ones, which gave me the same thing you experienced, the starting intro video full screen all over again.

However, on replacing it with a fully settings sorted preferences file that I had backed up, it worked as normal from before.

So if you haven't got a newly setup to your liking preferences file, you would want to do that first (by setting everything up in game the way you want) and then saving that preferences file in the DDO folder in your Documents folder (usually C drive, not always) as a backup. So when anything like this happens again, you can quickly let it default and then after that intro video plays. Quit the client, and then replace with your older working backup.

As for the delay between logins. That's largely for when you multi-client and attempt logins to avoid one of the clients or more bugging out the audio, and to prevent the preferences file from bugging out so easily. If you are continuing to experience audio issues, or find that the preferences file is being defaulted, it's likely a different issue at fault there. But with regards to the preferences file, give the above a whirl and see if that can't help when you experience issues next time. :)

Gotcha.
Went thru the resetting everything mess last night, and have pulled aside a fresh copy of the prefs. Will see how it goes next time.
