Noob questions here...

Alright, 1st month in and I solo 99% of the time. I love the DL but I get WRECKED by traps and cannot even see hidden doors.

So I rerolled again and went with DR for the pet to level 5 ( so I could level the pet up) and so far the rest to DL - currently sitting at level 13. I run dungeons 3 to 4 levels lower than me on epic and I cannot see any traps.

Should I have put more into spot or search? how do pure melee get around the traps if you cannot see them?

is TWF DL viable with 1 rogue/ 19 DL? or is there a TWF Tempest/DL build I could follow?

I do not run reaper or hardcore just simply epic dungeons and such. I am currently on my 1st life.

Loving the game, just starting to get frustrated.

TIA.

If you are doing elite dungeons, then you are doing something right. Traps for non-trappers are dealt with through trial and error. You basically learn where a trap is and avoid it, jump over it, get a resist energy potion of the appropriate type, etc. A lot of traps have a rhythm to them so you can move through them with the right timing. Personally, most of my builds are trappers with a high-ish Int for skill points, so I can still train the trapper skills on levels that are not. There are a few trapper-type classes, but my go-to is rogue. I tend to use 1st level as rogue and then another level later on to get Evasion, but that's me. Some use Dark Hunter or Artificer for their trapper classes. Rogue just gets a ton of skill points, which helps.

Now, for a non-trapper, hirelings, pets, minions can be useful to trigger traps or show you where one is, but you really just do what I said earlier. The FUN way to go is to have 3 levels of barbarian so you can use Blood Tribute and I Like Pain for their temporary hit points. Just run through traps with Blood Tribute on, hehe. I like 3 barb/2 rog, so I get those two skills and Evasion, which really helps against traps.

Anyways, find what works for you and have fun with it :p

I'm starting to think every build should splash rogue. It's just so useful.

Traps can be a major pain (as they are intended to be) so investing as much as possible into spot especially can help. You can then in many cases avoid it. Search has a problem in that it will max and fail unless you are rogue or ranger. Gear up as much as possible. Crystal Cove has a trinket (spyglass) that is very helpful. That event should some around again in September.

A rogue hireling can help a little but like all hirelings they are unpredictable.

By the tenth or twelfth life you will know where all the traps are anywway.

What difficulty are you running on? Elite will definitely hurt first life/newbies. If you're running on normal/hard, then you can at least learn where the traps are and maybe avoid them in harder runs. PRR works on most physical traps like spikes and blades. You can bring a tower shield and run through those. If you know what the trap is, you can bring energy resist/protect pots, or maybe a wand.

Use magic device (umd) is super helpful, and you should put pts into it if at all possible. A fire shield scroll saves a lot of damage. Spot is also very helpful, but if it's not a class skill or you're not wis-based, you'll need items to bump it up. Search isn't as important unless you're a trapper. There's very few, if any, cases where you need to find a hidden door to complete a quest. They mostly lead to optional xp and chests (usually without the good named items), sometimes a shortcut.

DDOwiki.com can help, too, because they have details of all the quests, among other things, with maps and trap placements and walkthroughs to help avoid them.

I know it's not quite what you asked, but the Spring Attack feat ( the active ability) will get you through a lot of trapped areas without taking damage. Spot is nice for giving warning of traps but if you don't have it as a class skill it will not be enough at higher difficulties and levels without tomes and skill boosting items, search and disable traps at high difficulty is slightly out of the reliable range for a new player and ways of coping with the traps are of greater utility than specialist skills.

It is my impression that a new player, using random gen. loot can be good at one thing but rarely two or more things, so going for trapping is a bit of a fool's game. When you splash into DDO you will ( or i did), feel like there are a million things to learn, and so many possibilities, it's easy to burn yourself out on it and you'll wander off, just get yourself a big hulking barbarian and cheese it through some normal/hard missions to learn were the big nasties are.

Spot is Wisdom-based - Spot, Search, Disarm need to be high if you're a trapper; I'd suggest supplementing highish stats with high spot/search bonus items. If you just want to be able to spot them, just have a decent wis, give yerself a few points and get an item.. https://ddowiki.com/page/Spot

Running a L15 quest on elite when you're 17/18 is a lot different than running the same L15 when you're also 15, aka "at level."

Reflex save, Dexterity help avoid damage from traps
PPR MRR if you get hit by a trap
AC help to avoid getting hit ( potential neg effect on reflex and dexterity the heaver the armor)
there are racial tree abilities from some races which effect secret doors and traps ( elf)

SPOT
  • For traps with a DC of 20 or lower, any character with a high enough Spot will trigger the alert message.
  • For traps with a DC over 20, only characters with the Trapfinding ability (i.e. only Rogues, Artificers, and Dark Hunters currently) can successfully Spot a trap.

SEARCH

With the search skill you can locate secret doors and hidden objects like the control box of a trap.
Note that there is no die roll involved; if your search skill is high enough, you'll always discover the object/door, and if it isn't you never will.
but you have to actively search with the magnifying glass

Traps with a DC of 20 or less can be found by any character (or hireling) with a high enough Search.
If the DC is higher than 20, only classes with the Trapfinding feat can find them (i.e. only Rogues and Artificers, currently).

Since you are in epics, if you know there is a trap that you need to bypass, consider reworking your epic destiny points so that you have some in Unyielding Sentinal. Take the first tier epic strike called ‘Guard Up.’ This gives a huge chunk of Temp hp based on your melee power for 6 seconds. It is great for dicey situations, damage over time effects that nag you, and dealing with traps.

You can get renewal out of that tree too for a cheap healing spell, and even take the energy resist, all for very few points.
