RNG only gear

It has been a long time since this was brought up.
Start a new character but you can only use RNG (i.e. not named gear).
Bonus points if the gear is only what the character loots and not crafted.
Could actually go another way and only have items you personally crafted with the character.

At first it sounds easy but it not a easy as you might think. Especially if you are used to having full named sets and BiS gear.

Would be nice to see some RNG Gear only groups. Kind of a throw back to when we had nothing but did not realize we had nothing.

For those that have tried this, share some details.
Race/class
level you made it to before abandoning it.
Best piece of gear you manage to score.

For me I was a human cleric.
I did get to level 20
It was kind of fun. It was exciting to see what there was in a chest or if the reward from the quest giver was better than what I had.
Best piece of gear was some plate armor that was a teal colored border, basically it had an extra stat. I do not recall the specifics but it had Devotion and Radiance so perfect for a cleric.

Of course the character is stripped now and has been a long time bank mule.

I have 9 racial past lives so far running with all crafted gear. I decided early on that gear tetris was not for me, and farming the gear in the first place was not for me, so I use all crafted gear.......and have plenty of storage space. You won't find me running reaper, but I'm fine with that too.

I usually don't run with any RNG gear, and wouldn't really want to try it as play style either. :) Still, sometimes there's an odd piece of equipment that gets too interesting to not wear... got a necklace during Mabar with +15 cha and +7 insightful cha... too good to not wear on my sorc. :)

Sounds like the first week of every HC season.

...other than the 'named' gear from Korthos. :)

In a way it is minus those that quickly dump hundreds or 1000's of shard on rerolls to get named loot quick.
While it certainly make the game harder to not run with sets/named gear, it is also a bit freeing. Kind of a back to basics type of play.

Ah gear tetris, the mini game within the game. I am not a fan of it myself. You can waste a lot of time into working it all out instead of actually playing the game. I can see the appeal of craft. If you see you are lacking in something, just craft a piece with the stat/bonus you need to fill.

Yeah, hard to walk away from a + 22 CHA item. I lost count of the number of times I looted an exceptional piece of RNG gear with an extra bonus but it would break my set so it gets either sold to a vendor, dissolved for crafting or sets in the bank for ages.

One of the fun things about hardcore is the absolute free for all for random gear at the beginning of the season. You find soooo many things in chests that you can use and each loot of a chest is like Christmas morning. And when something spectacular that fits pops out, it is just the best feeling. And it happens often when you don't really have anything. Even if you don't get something you can use, you will likely get something you can sell, which is almost as good. It really does bring back some nostalgia for when I first started playing.

I do wish there were a way of capturing this in the game in general. You can say RNG groups, but it is hard to play a game with both hands and one leg tied behind your back.

Like hardcore, you could do hardcore any time, just delete your character if you die. But it is different forcing something like this on your self and it being part of the game. Maybe a separate server, a permanent one, with limitations on gear, a server that gets back to the basics of the game and makes things harder in a good way.

ROFL I was thinking this exact same thing. Playing a Blightcaster doing R1 and R2 , already level 17 with 6 reaper points.

I enjoy the 'fresh start' experience and do as you describe somewhat regularly.

On my normal server, I sometimes run new, self sufficient characters as a way to evaluate 'Reaper Ready' character builds posted in the forums. (To date, in my hands, no build is 'Reaper Ready'.) Survivors become level 32, self sufficient, storage characters capable of hunting equipment.

On hardcore servers, I usually pick a 'Super Awesome Hardcore Ready' build and give it a whirl. Once again, in my hands, no such build is 'Super Awesome Hardcore Ready'. Once again, survivors become Level 32, self sufficient, storage characters for equipment hunting.

The only thing such characters ever craft is Feather Fall of Underwater Action.

If 'fresh start' groups happened on my normal server, I knew of their existence, and such groups were not dominated by super players, I would enthusiastically join them.

If I could move my accounts at will, I would seriously consider migrating to the current new player server, and then migrating again each time it changed, such that I was always with the new players.

Why not go really old school, No guild ship buffs. Build your character with only loot from chests and no Guild buffs.

That pretty much sums it up.
Finding others that might want to share that experience could be a problem.
In general we get to 5 and slap on Feywild gear with some Saltmarsh mixed in then 7 Isle of Dread, 10 Ravenloft then 15 Sharn. Maybe add Vecna at 18 for some. I am willing to be most that have been playing a while have their gear for every class in the bank waiting for each gear braket.
Chests hold very little in the way of something good except for the rare item like nebula fragments or threads of fate from raids.

The character I mentioned at the start was not in a guild and being a bank mule now It is still not in a guild :)
This is certainly one way to amp up the challenge.
