That's it. Post bad builds or bad build ideas here.

Maybe folks who enjoy challenging themselves can come here and prove their mettle.

Me? I'd just like to see what folks come up with, and I might try a build or two.

Maybe some reasonable limitations should probably apply? For example:
  • Avoid dumping critical stats and calling that a bad build. For example, a monk with only Int and Chr.
    • Distributing stats thinly would probably be ok.
  • Try to be thematic.
    • Why does the build exist?
    • Would it be fun to play or roleplay despite being challenging?

Throwing axes get only 1 threat range from imp crit. There are none with an expanded crit range. Simple thrown weapon expertise only applies to darts and daggers. It appears the wiki is wrong though, since simple thrown weapons says axes are in there, and maybe feat description is wrong.

I picked wood elf for Wild Step: "When you Tumble, you gain a +10% Action Boost bonus to movement speed, and a 10% Action Boost bonus to Missile Deflection for 10 seconds." On a build / class lacking runspeed boosts, I figure it can use all the help it can get. Or as I call it, the John Woo Action Hero Power Roll!

[Mental note to self: no, that's stupid, don't ever say that again.]

Main reason for going CHA-based is higher DCs on Holy Retribution and Silver Flame Exorcism (lol), plus higher saves etc. Technically doable as F2P, since you've got DEX to hit and damage to longbows already (so Feydark boosts DPS but isn't a hard requirement); and Haste Boost is strongly encouraged but not required. The APs you free can go towards more racial bonuses (e.g. +6% Doubleshot) and/or +2 Imbue dice from AA.

Low levels would be a pain, though, since you need 14 APs elf + 4 APs Arcane Archer (Energy of the Wild) just to unlock Feydark Illusionist, which is another 7 APs to unlock CHA to hit and damage. So maybe you focus on KotC for its DPS buffs first, particularly if you've got stacks of House Deneith Sturdy Arrows you can use instead of AA's Conjure Arrows.

+9 Imbue dice from Enhancements with your choice of Light (KotC), Force, or other elemental arrow Imbue; and another +5 dice from epic feats and ED enhancements.

Normally you wouldn't use Divine Crusader for ranged DPS but I like the idea of being party support as well, buffing & healing allies with Crusade while also pew-pewing; and it fits the "holy archer" vibe of this build.

I am all about trying and doing new or unexpected things. I am not sure I would do this, but some sort of weirdness would be fun. I am still thinking hard about your DA archer build for my next life. I am loving blightcaster a weeeeee bit too much though right now.

Using a Veteran II toon to test: you can either go all-in on KotC for Knight's Training (free Shot on the Run) and Censure Demons; or focus on AA, e.g., 14 racial / 8 AA (Morphic Arrows, +2 Imbue dice). The latter has the benefit of infinite ammo, of course, though it doesn't gain much from being a paladin at this stage.

Theoretically, sure. I don't think I've taken anything which doesn't work, except maybe Divine Sundering; I know you can't used (Improved) Sunder with ranged weapons and I'm not sure if it would proc from Holy Retribution. But at least it's not like making a CON-based Ravager and having to keep a window open to track all the bugs and make sure I'm not wasting too many APs.

Like I said, though, leveling it would probably be even more painful than leveling a pure ranged ranger, due to no bonus feats and the aforementioned "AP tax" to unlock Arcane Archer. You did see the title of this thread before coming in here, right? ;)

One persons dross is another's gold! You never know what hairbrained scheme someone might come up with thats actually a loved (something) for someone else.

Trolling (as in fishing) the build forums is always fun and interesting and even the worst builds have something interesting to teach. :)

Int based DA? Minimum wis? (ok, its got a 8 supreme tome, so I am cheating here. i don't know what it would be like without a tome, but probably horrible). It came from exploring @unbongwah 's ideas how to roll a ranged DA. I don't think much fails with inquis (which is sad p2w), but this is the jack of some trades master of absolutely nothing kind of deal.

I interpret the challenge here as a build that has some underlying logic of how or why you’d get to a class split or approach. It shouldn’t be totally worthless, it should at least bring something to a party, but should be really challenging to do anything worthwhile with. I didn’t put it in a planner because as per usual I’m doing this in a hurry at lunch so apologies for the format.

Something like a Gnome 12/8 bard artificer split that takes the unnecessarily hard way to get INT to hit and damage from Insightful Strikes and Different Tack, running in swashbuckler using a light hammer with a rune arm.
Non-racial or universal points spent in:
Battle Engineer 36 including all tier 5 enhancements.
Swashbuckler 22 including core 4 and Music Box
Spellsinger 22 to get to Sustaining Song
Max INT plus all level ups to INT.

It’s a plausible seeming build because you can use a rune arm, stack a decent number of imbue dice, Insightful reflexes will give you a solid reflex save, you can do traps, have a ton of skill points, you get a couple of bonus feats, and have decent buffs available, plus some modest party healing capabilities. So it hits the “not a complete drag on a party” test.

But it’s likely to play horribly because you severely limit your ability to do anything well by getting to Int to hit and damage… unconventionally, a path that also locks you out of a battle trance. Any offensive or CC spells will be hard to land because you won’t have the DCs, (fascinate should work decently FWIW). You’ll have to devote a blue slot to a sapphire of spell agility or stick to light armor. Your main utility will be buffs, some small heals, and smacking away with a light hammer, a weapon not wealthy in good named options and towards the low end of damage output even with enhanced range and multiplier. No points for anything helpful in WC. You’ll be able to use a repeater of course, but won’t have many feats to spare to beef up the power.

I'm not sure if they're bad because I have no method of searching for common builds and am rather new. My highest level is a level 3 monk, but I have a history of minmaxing in Path of Exile.
Build 1: Dodge
Gnome Monk 12 Rogue 6 Fighter 2. 32 AP into Thief Acrobat, 8 AP into Ninja Spy, 13 AP into Henshin Mystic, 11 AP into Kensei, 7 AP into Horizon Walker, 13 AP into Gnome racial (offset by PL AP). Go into Grandmaster of Flowers (32 EDP) and Fury of the Wild (4 EDP). Grab everything dodge-related within AP count on all trees. Take Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, and Scion of the Plane of Air feats.
Acquire sentient weapon and apply the following filigrees:
* Snowpeak's Gifts: Dodge and Max Dodge
* Shadowstrike: Dodge and Max Dodge
* Twilight's Cloak: Dodge and Max Dodge
* Celerity: Dodge and Max Dodge
* Zephyr: Dodge
* Through the Mists: Dodge
* 2 additional Zephyr (any)
* 2 additional Through the Mists (any)
End result should be ~67% dodge cap and ~60% dodge without items or active effects. Rogue gives Uncanny (25% uncapped dodge, 8% uptime), and the fighter levels can be shifted to rogue to turn that into Improved Uncanny (50% uncapped, 18% uptime), allowing one to hit the hard cap of 95% chance to dodge. I am not sure how Shadowdancer's Meld interacts with other Epic Strikes, but if it cannot be accessed through shorter cooldown strikes, then it can provide 15% uncapped dodge with 66% uptime for 21 EDP (within PL range).

Build 2: Imbue
Drow Paladin 8 Ranger 6 Rogue 2. 11 points into Sacred Fist, 22 points into Arcane Archer, 13 points into Dark Hunter, 8 points into Assassin, 22 points into Inquisitive, 19 points into Drow (16 points offset by PL AP). Go into Draconic Incarnation (13 EDP), Divine Crusader (12 EDP), and Legendary Dreadnought (6 EDP). Take a Scion legendary, Embodiment of Law, and Enhanced Elemental Damage feats.
Acquire augment from Hunt or Be Hunted raid along with a sentient weapon with the following filigrees:
* Snowpeak's Gifts: Imbue Dice
* 3 of any from The Long Shadow
* 3 of any from Snake Bite
* 2 of any from Reverberation
End result should be +48 imbue dice and access to Venomed Blades (1d8 poison, 2x power scaling). Build can gain up to 2 more imbue dice with the following:
* Losing Venomed Blades (19 -> 16 AP, now fully covered by PL) to get enough AP to go into Keeper of the Chalice (6 AP) for +1 imbue die. One would need to use AA imbue, Sacred Fist imbue, or Keeper imbue, all of which use a smaller die for damage and only Sacred Fist gives 2x power scaling, but only for melee.
* Adding Offhand Versatility feat. Due to needing to remain Centered, this would limit the user from using ranged, two-handed, or dual wielding. Rune arms break Centered status, so it's going to be an empty slot, but it does provide +1 imbue dice.

There could be incorrect information here, since I depended on the wiki heavily for numbers.

6 Bard / 7 Dark Apostate / 7 Palemaster (Vampire) elven arcane archer. High wisdom and enchantment focus. Uses paralyzing arrows.

EDIT: I have further edited the build, into a more serious form. Now I'm taking metamagics early on and basically playing through early levels as a fairly standard Spellsinger, since it takes a lot of points to unlock the Paralyzing Arrows. I've also exchanged the 7th bard level for a 7th wizard. I had to fiddle with the attributes and add some intelligence during level up for skills.

Spellsinger: +5 enchantment DC
Palemaster: +2 DC
Trickery Domain: +2 DC
Arcane Archer: +3 DC
Spell focuse: +1 DC
Wisdom: I dunno 20 DC

I'm not sure if they're bad because I have no method of searching for common builds and am rather new. My highest level is a level 3 monk, but I have a history of minmaxing in Path of Exile.

Having built a few min-dps/max-defense builds myself, I can say these tend to be bad but fun to play if you like solving puzzles. I had a Zombie-Monk running around in Earth Stance. It was really hard to kill but had about the lowest DPS a build could get. For a few fights, I had to run to traps so I could kill mobs. For other fights, I just had to walk away before I ran completely out of mana. He didn't lose many fights, but he didn't win them all, either (if you just walk away, is that losing a fight or a draw?).

This isn't bad; it's evil. /s 🤣

Edit: I didn't notice the AP cost of getting Paralyzing Arrow in the first place - lol. That's almost half your AP before you even worry about DCs from Enhancements.

OTOH it's Dark Apostate 7 so it can self-cast Inflict Critical Wounds. Not sure why bard 7 instead of wizard 7, though, since spells aren't listed.

It's a one-trick pony (max-DC Paralyzing Arrows), but at least it has a trick you don't see many people build for; with some survivability from undead form. Too late to complain about getting what you asked for! :cool:

I mean, sure, go 7 wizard instead. I didn't put THAT much thought into this. I guess I just wanted that Good Hope spell from bard :p

EDIT: Ooh, now I remember! I wanted that healing song from Spellsinger, tier 3 gives you Music of the Dead, so that acts as a long lasting Death Aura, and now I'm actually seeing that I put way too many points into Arcane Archer. This is supposed to be a heroic build, and some of the choices go deep into Epic levels. So maybe there ARE enough points for the song afterall?

EDIT2: Fiddled around with enhancement points, and went with tier 5 bard, for that 1 extra enchantment DC :p

Well it's meant to be a heroic build, I assume you don't want to continue suffering through Epics with this, so it doesn't matter whether it's 7 bard or 7 wizard for that sweet sweet dimension door. I imagine if you got to 20 with this, you'd just shake your head and say: "Well... that was a journey!" and promptly reincarnate into something more sensible.

You can't even take the last two racial AA cores until epic levels, so it's just as well you changed focus. :D

BTW you listed the +1 Enchantment DCs from elf but it looks like you didn't actually take Enchantment Lore. If you still want it, I'd take the first two elf cores, first rank of Aerenal Weapon Training, max Enchantment Lore, one rank of elven Arcnaum, and racial AA unlock.
