An expansion giveaway does not equal a discovery elixir

Giving away an expansion for a prize in the month of the Dragon is an excellent idea. However, giving those who have all the expansions an elixir of discovery that lasts one hour is not commiserate value. DDO continually struggles to reward its most loyal customers. Consider the players who have purchased ultimate editions of each expansion, spending over $1000 on content. This is the revenue that drives the game. Giving people a 60-minute potion for their loyalty feels hollow.

Perhaps there is some sort of disconnect on what these elixirs are worth? The 10% named item boost is fairly worthless. Especially when compared to +10 treasure hunter weekends where named items (often with reaper attributes) drop all over the place. How many quests are you getting done in an hour? How many chests will you even open with a mere 10% boost?

Players that have all the expansions should have been given something valuable, like an unbound Otto's Box, Wish of Inheritance, or a Card Cleanser that they could use or sell for astral shards. The price of these items is about what an expansion costs in the DDO store. We have supported the game for years (decade) buying each expansion. It would be nice if we got something other than a 60-minute Big Mac.

You're talking about base expansions... not ultimate editions, that have been out so long that most of the player base, if they wanted to really grind for it, probably could have unlocked by now with DDO points. Hence why Vecna didn't get added to that pile.

You're being dramatic. Stop it. It's not that serious.

That being said...

I do agree they are pretty worthless elixirs. I call them placebo elixirs for a reason.
Recently ran a 15% one through quick runs of Abbot about 4 times, and pulled a named item once, and a pretty crappy one at that. lol. It's kind of a joke.

It depends how you value it. If you value it at 4000 points that is a fair assessment. However, it's a 2 year old xpac and old xpacs are periodically sold for 99 pts.

SSG does not recognize and reward loyalty. I purchased the top tier of every expansion for cash. Although the free pack give-away is generous, it’s too bad that their most loyal customers don’t receive an alternative that is on par with a free expansion pack.

^this
heck even upping that potion to the 3 hour variant would be better. a one hour pot doesn't give many runs to make it really worthwhile.

This year of the dragon thing seems more geared toward a campaign to bring new players into the fold rather than reward loyal veterans. We've all seen how they plan to do that, it's called the VIP loyalty Rewards Program. 🤷‍♂️ Then again, they did give people a free archetype and a free quest pack, plus more coming down the pike, which we definitely should all be grateful for.

I see where people are coming from though. It is almost like it is an incentive to NOT spend money on this game.

Though I will point out, this is just access to the quest content of old expansions. It's not like they are getting sentient jewels and permanent gold seal hirelings. These things may cost 2000 to what 3500 points depending on the expansion chosen to someone who doesn't have them but thats just because SSG almost never reduces the price for old content unless it is a sale. Any other game company would be selling access to this stuff for less than 10 bucks by now, and probably bundled for free with the newest expansion.

So?

Why should it?

Feeling entitled at all?

I'm quite happy having something of value rather than nothing because I already own, and have played with for years, all the expansions.

It's brilliant that an expansion is being given to those that need it. Like FREEQUESTS, it's a significant value add to folks behind the curve in terms of accessing top tier quests and loot, and potentially may allow more players in these quests - that's only a good thing in my book.

The gesture from SSG to provide something to those of us who don't need the giveaway, is welcome. They didn't have to do anything here.

Plenty to moan about elsewhere. If you don't like the pot, don't take it.

Carry on... 😁👍

This is a perception of customer valuation, Jack.

I had not bothered to write because although I actually consider the elixir useless (10% is nothing, I have never seen it increase my loot probabilities significantly - they are overprized elixirs in the store), since it is a gift I am not worried that be good or bad. Thanks for the gift. It worries me much more when the things I pay for are not worth what they ask for them (eg VIP)

But by offering something so unequal, SSG effectively creates a perception that they value their paying customers less. The xpacs are a selection to choose from, probably if they had offered a selection of xp pot, slayer pot, loot pot, cake, they would have pleased more people. If I had been them, I would have offered 3 pots to choose from these types or three cakes. They probably wouldn't have gotten any criticism, since almost everyone would almost certainly have found a useful item on the list.

It's a gift, so I'm not complaining, but when it comes to marketing, Jack, SSG has a lot to learn.

I would rather it be a better percent rather than run longer. I would prefer a +50% or +75% elixir that runs 10 minutes.

Give us a percent that really gives a decent chance of actually getting something.
