When considering a Rune Arm, remember that RA blast damage scales with Artificer Level - here, "1".

The Machrotechnic epic destiny has a couple options that can raise your effective Artificer level. Again, not something assumed in the design above, but potentially an option if you are including a rune arm in your build.

At ML 3 Cannith Crafted weapons do 1d6 + 1d6; at ML 4, they do 2d6 + 2d6*- huge diff at that level. I'd strongly suggest waiting for the latter (ML 4), and just using the Nicked Repeating Crossbow from the Marketplace Sharn Chain (ML 2, 2d6+3, +2% doubleshot) until then, ample for any QL 1-2 quests.

(* or 2d6 + 2d10 for Unnatural Bane, if you're a weapon swapper for undead/monstrous humanoid quests)

o ML 2: https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Nicked_Repeating_Light_Crossbow

Even the default Ember Repeater does the job just fine, and almost(?) any ML 1 Repeater you find will be an improvement over that - all Repeaters are OP for Level 1-2 quests, even without any Enhancement damage boosts.

I run all the low level quests (more or less) so I stay at level 3 for a while hence making that specific crossbow.

Rune Arms: level 15 Dumpster Fire. 2D5 Bludgeon, 2D8 fire seems significantly better than Suppressive Fire's 2D6.
While Dumpster's shot is, quiet frankly complete rubbish, most of you damage comes from shooting people in the face, not the rune arm.

Exploding Cannon Shot for barrel/box breaking is why Suppressive Fire gets used over anything else. On this build rune arms are not meant for damage specifically. What they add is just extra from the actual activation of the item along with the imbue for your main weapon. It also has Silver DR bypass which is nice for Necro 4.

<cough still overkill cough>

I can see the attraction of a personalized weapon for this, but both are killers at the level we're talking, and there are only Korthos and Borderlands for Level 3 (16 quick quests w/o Misery's).

But if trying to run at top speed, one wants top DPS, and no question {1d6 Force + 1d6 Bludgeon + 1d6 Fire} (+2 Deadly slotted elsewhere, I'm guessing?) is superior on a couple levels to {2d6 Cold +3 Deadly}. o7

Thanks for this guide, it works really well. I changed two things in the Epic Destiny to better deal with traps.
Fey Sight for Empathetic Link and Technican for Well of Darkness

Thanks for the nod (Swimms here), took a long time off and just came back to finish my racials (again), glad to see there is still a good levelling inquisitive option out there, nice layout.

Welcome back bud! Great to see you again and thank you!

Ranger - Jump and Merfolk's Blessing.
Artificer - Conjure Bolts, Enchant Weapon, Enchant Armour/Curative Admixture: Cure Light Wounds, Elemental Weapons and Lucky Cape.
For the ranger spell selection - Isn't Rams Might better for the +2 Damage? Text sais it applies "to all weapons, including throwing weapons and repeating crossbows"

Anyway, love your concept!

I don't know if it actually works that way or not so didn't take it. You can swap Merfolk's for it though without issue (I like it for making swimming sections a lot faster).

Glad to see you enjoyed it! Trapping gets easier with better gear especially if you can cannith craft it yourself. But hey if it works for you then it works for you :)

After a bunch of feedback about the layout in the first post I have edited in some big changes to the format to hopefully make it easier to follow depending on what version of the build you are following along with.

So I am fairly new to using X-Bows. Is there a case to be made on which to use Heavy vs Light???

Heavy does more damage per shot. Light shoots more often.

Generally, I think that comes out slightly in favor of Heavy, but it can depend on the particular weapon and/or your build. If you are looking to trigger crowd control or critical effects then more attacks means more chances to do so and could favor light.

That said, generally you want Ratcatcher (light) at low levels and The Hallowed Splinters (heavy) at high levels.

This...the question is mostly academic, because the only time you really have to choose between Heavy and Light is at endgame, if you're making a Dino Bone xbow. Otherwise, from 1-7 its all OHKO anyway...from 8-19 its Ratcatcher, from 20-30 its eStorm.

The difference in speed is practically neglectable. Heavy is better when the bows are the same.

However, in the Gnome racial tree there is a fair bit of extra damage on light weapons, including the light crossbow. If you have a lot of racial past lives that puts it over the top. Otherwise i wouldnt bother.

Corrected the feat order in the first post and added a note just below regarding the level 12 and 15 feat selection.

Just finished this life which was for Acolyte of the Skin, getting IPS at level 15 was a bummer but overall pretty solid :) Time to TR back down to level 1 and set off again. Really missing a rune arm though for box breaking :D

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Stoner81.

I have a pure Rogue Inquisitive at level 32. It took a while to warm up to the play style but she is now one of my favorite characters.

I could see myself using this configuration with my avatar to fill out classes I have no desire to play. Being ranged with trap skills is very forgiving. As you wrote, for someone who has tomes and some past life feats, it should be a breeze.

The one downside I have found with this build when starting out is that... well... it kinda sucks a bit! LMAO!

Ranged damage takes a bit to get up to snuff so the 3x Rangers lives make a massive difference (I started with another toon fresh for running with the wife so first hand experience of this). Since me and the wife now have those lives done the difference is night and day! So yes it is a breeze as you rightly say but it does take a bit to get going if starting completely from scratch.

Where this excels the most is gear tetris... I hate with a passion gearing and everything that goes with it. Being able to use the same gear over and over and over again is a massive QoL thing for me and means I can empty my TR cache the second I leave Korthos and reach a bank. The downside to this though is that running the same thing over and over and over again can get boring but I would rather have the boredom than spending 3 hours or more getting ready to TR because I have stuff everywhere from previous lives.

It shouldn't. Any inqui split should start with an arti level, which means you can run repeaters from 1-7 then switch to inqui with Ratcatcher at 8

A CC heavy repeater with double damage affixes and a damage aug or two (and festive solar and Arborea and force ritual if you're really committed) will tear up low level. 1d6s at 1, then I think 2d6s are at 4 or 5

Also take precision asap for AF, since obv that RP stacking blows everything else out of the water
