The New Trap Alerts Need Toggle!

"Amanda detected a trap, now I have to question my life choices." (Market Chat)
"When I run in circles I look like that inflatable thing on the chariot lot!"
"Does this "!" look good on me?"
"Everyone back up, if these trap alerts stack someone's going to get "!"'d to death." (Sharn Mission)
"That alert explains why you have size-17 boots." (H-Orc)

We're going to be seeing Alert jokes for years. Just don't post the offensively-worded ones. )

Icons for DDO should fit in with the overall visual strategy to look and feel like a family. The drunken "!" is far too generic and meaningless and therefore sending an irrelevant message. You aren't supposed to be petrifying people by: spamming loud vicious sounds, and huge red exclamation marks.

For example, WARNING! <CLANG!>, WARNING! <CLANG!>, WARNING! <CLANG!>, WARNING! <CLANG!>, WARNING! <CLANG!>, and that may be just one single trap doing that when you move through its zone. It's not exactly subtle.

@Cordovan, would it be beyond the DDO Developers' ability to provide an [ON/OFF] toggle for the new style audio-visual regarding traps. SSG have obviously spent significant resources in implementing the Looney Tune Exclamation mark [!] system. I doubt it was designed for people with zero cognition. Therefore, I presume it was supposed to be meant as some form of aid for trap disarming specialists, e.g. Rogues. Some competent Rogues consider it a nuisance for one valid reason or another.

You're probably right, could be trappers who only received "participation stickers" in school, or are playing DDO with the screen turned off.

I love those new Icons because they are WAY more noticeable than the existing notifications. But I agree that an ON/OFF toggle would be very much appreciated.

On this I slightly disagree with my better half. I'd turn them off myself. And watch for when she pulls up short cause she still has them on ;P

As explained prior [Rogues] move on their legs. They aren't usually static unless trying to actually perform the Disable device action.

I don't plan on being a statue, when moving through active traps. There are plenty of completely safe places by those pillars (screenshot below) and if you were so inclined you could zigzag so you had fewer blades to run through.

My role is not just for one specific task, and I know how to prioritise correctly – I'm not a lapdog or one-trick pony. I don't need the unnecessary cognitive overload of this new feature. I only need to rest her long enough to activate the Disable device icon.

I was in a quest with people that could not, because of the colors, see the "HEY THERE IS SOMETHING THAT WILL KILL YOU RIGHT HERE" trying to warn them popping up over my trapper.

They kept dying.

Repeatedly.

It was vexing.

In other quests they saw the alert just fine and paused when the "stop" sound happened and the "you will die if you continue right now" floaty over the head of my trapper appeared.

Maybe allow us to replace the noise with Navi saying "HEY! LISTEN!" or the exclamation point with a rainbow alert triangle so that folks get the hint that there's a trap ahead and the scout needs to deal with it, with an option to toggle such things off in the UI Settings so that the folks who *know already* can sidestep the otherwise spammy notifications...

I suspect the people responsible for designing the feature don't play Rogues that often, and possibly even loath them. As for having an accompanying irritating sound effect, it just comes across like a poorly conceived and short-sighted design idea.
Someone out there doesn't like pure rogues, especially given the changes to the Shadowdancer epic destiny, which used to be great for a rogue and now has magic user stuff (as if there aren't already enough magic user destinies) and the lack of a good end game rogue gear set. And now this.

I loathe it, and want to be able to turn it off. Also I have found it contributes to lag when in an area of many traps with all the inane !!!!!!!s pinging everywhere. Please make it optional at the very least.

I believe they should be set in the UI settings/gameplay to turn the audio/visual on, or off, or to change to the old style or use the new.

Personally, I really enjoy the new changes and think they are great, but I support changing them and giving players the ability to turn them off or modulate the warning sounds and visuals on to something custom. Allowing players to play as they wish with a custom warning ui is a better option to make the game fun for all.

Given the way it's currently set up, that seems dangerous/ripe for abuse. You hear the sound of any nearby party member detecting and getting the warning, not just your own. I can imagine some really offensive audio uploads.

As a dev I'd set that up so you saw your own settings no matter who had the alert, so player one sees the conventional !s, while player two, who selected a smaller * and a really clangy noise would see that effect for everyone...

I'm fine with there being alerts, and if people want a toggle, by all means make a toggle.
What I don't understand is why they look like cartoon alerts and not like they are part of the current game design.
Every time I see one it pisses me off.

I have also notice performance issues with the new audio-visual Looney Tune Exclamation mark [!] system. The graphic design looks even more confusing when you have both the new "?" and "!" icons appearing and overlaying each other at the same time.

I had to look up "Navi: Hey Listen", as mentioned (Post #88) and found a "Navi Hey Listen video". Perhaps a Kobold equivalent alert audio would be: Not in the Face! Not in the Face!

I like that the trap warnings are big, because I often miss small details on the screen.

However, their design makes the game look too much "cartoony". Another graphics style should be better there, maybe a skull with an exclamation mark next to it or something
... Although ... That skull should not fill the whole screen, of course ... Because that would be bad in the middle of a fight.

I have seen issues with traps. The alert not going off untill your in the trap. In Party Crashers the box dont show up have too back up, move forward and search again. o_O

After running something like Prove Yer Worth. Yeah I was hating every minute of listening to that racket of a sound. I am neutral on the animation. If push came to shove. I would say lose it though. I also don't like hearing the sound when other players detect. It is annoying. I am not for taking anything away. I would like the option to at least turn the sound off.

I challenge the dev that created this to run prove your worth or Undermine on a trapper. We will get the option to shut off sound on the next patch.
I have specifically avoided Undermine simply because uf this mechanic. :)

I like the new system because the old one made it easy to miss trap alerts if a lot of other things were happening too.

That said, I’m not quite sure why they made it so other players would see and hear it too.

For that one reason alone there should be a toggle to turn it off.
Agreed only the person spotting it should get any notification. If you don't stop when you notice your rogue is searching, you deserve what you get. I always jump and then search (you can start searching in mid-air) to let other members know something is not right (I don't do voice).
